Bobby Moore shows an excellent defensive performance in a British Home Championship game against Northern Ireland - the opposition fielded arguably the greatest (and certainly the most exciting) player in the world at the time, current Ballon d'Or holder, Georgie Best.

Such a tragedy George Best never played in the World Cup for Northern Ireland. And it is kinda typical the moment he stopped international football NI qualified for Spain 82. Despite Best not in the team they still got to the knock out stages. If Best was still playing for NI... God knows how far they'd get.

Who knows George will play even better than Roger Milla did for Cameroon eight years later in Italy .

If George Best playing against you, be sure to wet down a muddy horse pasture pitch beforehand and do it for days - so that his quickness unbelievable skills are nullified and tactics of both teams become long balls and headers, elbows and fists flying

Think Norn Iron fielded eight top-flight English Division players in this game. How it would kill to be able to call on a squad of that sort of strength today.

Whoever ran Northern Ireland in 1982 is a traitor to his nation. Best for all he did in the years prior should have been on that World Cup team even if for just symbolism. He could have played 15 min as a sub and maybe created a moment of magic or two. Would love to know the story behind that omission. Even if George was done by then playing international football surely he would have welcomed a spot. He deserved to lead the team onto the pitch before each game and to play atleast a few minutes.

Nice ro hear the commentators say " Ireland " rather than use the term for the caliphate enforced on the Northern area of Ireland.

probably the substitute. I think they were only allowed the one back then, and squad numbers were unheard of, so all subs on the bench wore numberless shirts

Why does it say Ireland v England? It is meant to be NORTHERN IRELAND. And was this at Windsor Park in Belfast?
@HarmsFootball
@HarmsFootball 2 года назад
Where does it say that? Or are you referring to the commentary? Yeah, this game took place in Belfast.

I think the captions and the narration of this video do refer to “Northern Ireland”. Bear in mind, however, that while the Ireland side in the British Home Championship did (it seems) begin competing under the name “Northern Ireland” in the 1950s, in the Home Championship tournaments they were the •only• side from that island (in contrast to other FIFA competitions, where it might be necessary to distinguish between the Republic of Ireland team and the Northern Ireland team). So since Northern Ireland was the only side from Ireland that competed in the British Home Championships, in that context it would not be surprising that people continued to refer to that side simply as “Ireland”, out of force of habit, if nothing else. Note: Sources are surprisingly muddled on the point of •when• the national team from Northern Ireland stopped using the name “Ireland”, and started going by “Northern Ireland”. And the answer varies depending on whether we’re talking about the name used in FIFA competitions generally, or in the British Home Championship (or “BHC”), specifically. According to some authorities, in 1953 FIFA ruled that the side organized by the Irish Football Association - the Belfast governing body - was thenceforth to be known as “Northern Ireland”. Other sources state that it was not until 1957 that the team was known as “Northern Ireland” in the Home Championship competition. But then, different sources state that the side’s matches in the Home Championship continued to be played simply as “Ireland” through 1971. Those sources indicate that, for a couple years after that in the Home Championship competition, the side went haphazardly by either name, from match to match. Supposedly, it did not finally switch over to “Northern Ireland” for all BHC matches until 1974. I freely acknowledge that I have no idea which of those conflicting sources are actually more reliable. The historical record on that point seems a mess, and it would be a hell of a research project to get it straightened out!
