Cool! Nowadays, when we think of manufacturing, we think of a fully automated system. We forget that, even with machines to ensure uniformity of product, we used to need experienced workers to monitor each step of the process, to ensure that each batch of a product in a production run was moving through the process smoothly. The people didn't just feed the machines, they knew---from monitoring tens of thousands of pieces of product---when something was going slightly awry in the process, when to make a correction during the run and when to shut down the production run for a more extensive repair. They knew how to work with each machine to keep it running as well as it should. Production workers are very smart people!
This machine was used for 98 years in Appleton Wisconsin USA to make hair pins that were sold around the world. Several sizes and colors. During WWII the hair pins had to take a back seat when the company was contracted to make pins for hand grenades. This was a family owned business and it was built and maintained by a small group of people throughout the years. The pins were sold on cards (filled by hand), and in containers by weight. The paint needed to be water based and dryed with an attached hair dryer. The speed of the machine was timed to allow the drying to take place while still on the machine. I was just the videographer and a guy who asked many questions the last day the machine was run before dismantling. I believe it was sold.
