Bobby Whitlock’s contribution to two historic rock albums should be enough to want people to investigate his music and history more… an extremely talented musician and singer… never got the credit he deserved… his channel here on RU-vid is very entertaining and informative. I’ve binged watched lots of his and Coco’s videos… I have his book ( I’m saving it to read on my vacation)… and Thanks to Guitar Historian… for shedding some light on this talented artist. Peace…🌜🌞🌛

Whitlock & Clapton’s voices together were the greatest rockin' blues tone of that era. 'It’s too late' is the epitome of great blues rock and blues rock vocals.

He and I taught guitar at Young's Music in Memphis around 1978. I jammed on acoustic with him in the store one day. I almost forgot it. I also knew his younger brother, Nathan, who also played guitar.

Thanks for putting that together. Bobby Whitlock is truly one of those criminally "overlooked" or forgotten musicians in classic rock. The ""Layla" album would not even have existed without his inspiration and contributions.

Thank you for this. The D&B bands introduced so much great talent - Jim Gordon, Carl Radle, Jim Keltner, Leon Russell, Sam Clayton, Rita Coolidge, Kenny Gradney, Bobby Keys, Jim Price, Jimmy Karstein etc. - as well as the soulful gospel-inspired and occasionally country- and rock 'n' roll-infused sound that propelled those early Clapton hits (his debut album was him fronting the D&B band), Joe Cocker ('The Letter', 'Delta Lady'), and Mad Dogs & Englishmen (essentially the D&B band led by Leon Russell). Today we hear that sound from the Tedeschi-Trucks Band. On one of Eric Clapton's Crossroads DVDs Tedeschi and Trucks note that they had, surprisingly given that Duane Allman was a guest member of the D&B band, only recently discovered D&B. According to Whitlock, the focus on the original trio was Bonnie - she was the one who was impressing everyone. Then Delaney, in the sort of move he became notorious for, put his name first. I believe it was Harry Nilsson who took George Harrison to a bar one night to see D&B and Friends. Harrison, highly impressed, asked D&B if he could bring a tape recorder and record them the following night. They agreed. That was the tape he played to Clapton when the latter was wanting to determine the opening act for the Blind Faith tour. According to Ginger Baker, the only time Blind Faith saw Clapton on that tour was when he was playing their set. Otherwise, he travelled, ate, slept and played with the D&B band. Yes, Jimmy Miller produced the Stones. He had previously produced the Spencer Davis Group, most notably monster hits 'Gimme Some Lovin'' and 'I'm a Man' (which he co-wrote with Stevie Winwood), and Traffic. It was he who introduced percussion to those songs and to the Stones. That's him on cowbell for 'Honky Tonk Woman'. He also drummed on a some Stones tunes including 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', 'Happy', 'Shine a Light' and the end of 'Tumbling Dice'. Keith Richards said that it was Miller who turned his folk dirge of a tune 'Sympathy for the Devil' into the samba-driven, percussion-adorned gem that it became. The mention that Carl Radle and Jim Gordon quit D&B to join Derek & the Dominos isn't quite accurate, as everyone quit the band after the UK/Euro tour, except Whitlock. When EC and Whitlock, who was living at Clapton's house at the time (Steve Cropper suggested he spend some time with Eric, even purchasing the ticket) decided to put a band together (at EC's prompting) Carl Radle and Jim Keltner are who they wanted. Radle was available but Keltner was busy with Gabor Szabo. To their surprise, Gordon just happened to be in London, so he was enlisted. Ultimately, he would be the one to prompt the breakup of the band. Hopefully this adds some insight into what you've already said. You do an admirable job, and it is great that you delve into topics like Mr. Whitlock and others who aren't necessarily always the headliners.

Kinda hard to believe that he wasn"t invited to play at the George Harrison tribute concert.

I always loved his work on 'Derek & the Dominoes'. 'Tell the truth'. and so forth.

I saw Delaney and Bonnie and Friends with Eric Clapton at The Fillmore East . I also saw The Cream on Long Island and Blind Faith at MSG . Robby Krieger with the Doors , THREE times and Mike Bloomfield with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band . There was a lot of GREAT music back then . The shows , based on the time period , were not that expensive .

He seems to me to be fine with that and proud of his input to 2 of the best albums of that era ( or any other). He is very credible in what he says. Thanks for this great video. Bobby's contributions to ATMP and LAOAL are immense. His albums are all really good, as are his albums with CoCo. His autobiography is a must read. And it will definitively tell you who is playing what on what song on ATMP. He and Coco's RU-vid channel is full on great rock n roll stories and info. He definitely doesn't get the credit or respect he deserves and has earned.

Bobby got my attention in the mid 60s at the Cabaret night club on Highland In the band The Counts. He was a great musician on that Hammond. Loved when the doors were locked and you stayed for the jam session until it was time to get a shower and go to class at Memphis State. He was a a super friendly guy. Followed him for many years. Glad he finally gets the recognition he deserves..as a workld class musician..

If there were any other period of history that a persona of Mr. Whitlocks caliber had captured the attention and imagination of the world...it would be the renaissance. Just saw this. Love BW and CoCo and so happy you showed that 1973 DATD In Concert album cover at the end. That version of Let it Rain is spectacular, especially Bobby's organ and vocals with Eric as they come back from the drum solo. Was able to pickup the vinyl as a cutout for $3 in 1976 and wore it out. Thanks for this and everything else you do, GH!

Eric Clapton is the definition for a troubadour. This man has endured trial after trial and never quit. The man lost a child. Instead of burying himself in self loathing or alcohol , he writes some of his best shit .

He has never been given the credit he was due. He wasn't even asked to perform at The Concert For George but played on every song on All Things Must Pass. So many artists have forgotten about HIS contribution to THEIR fame.

Loved the Sonic Blue (Daphne Blue) Strat behind you for this discussion; shades of the pair of 1961 Sonic Blue Strats John and George got around 1965. (George's obviously became the classic Rocky Strat that Fender recently recreated).

I have really enjoyed going back to watch your fantastic videos as well as the Bobby and CoCo vids on their own channel. I have a couple of questions... Bobby seems to have a heart of Gold. My questions are: why did he take a decade or two away from all things Rock music? What did he do during those years? The other thing is a bit more delicate. Bobby speaks as though he had some kind of handicap. I can't put my finger on it, but it's as though he did too many mind-affecting drugs and those drugs ef'ed up his mind a bit. I don't make this observation with any kind of judgment or condemnation at all - it's just that he seems somewhat unusual in his speaking mannerisms. What did he do as far as "D n A"? How did he get sober? Does he discuss that anywhere? I want to say again how much I appreciate your work on the series - in fact - on all your videos. You are remarkable and admirable and you make a wonderful contribution to guys like me who grew up on R&R, listening since the fifties. How do you know so much? You obviously are not old enough to have been there for all these musicians about whom, you know so much! I mean, you weren't even born when the Beatles were around. I cannot imagine what that must be like - to grow up without hearing the Beatles from their beginnings. I would love to know how your passion developed; what inspired you to do this work on Rock History? What is your own personal musical involvement - I see you with a guitar occasionally. I would love to know more about you, as well as the answers to my questions around Bobby W's life as I mentioned above. Thank you brother! I appreciate you so much! I
