When James Brown said "on the 1" this what he meant. Bobby was first a guitarist, then gospel soulful blues R&B singer, then Grio who gave wisdom and knowledge subjectively regarding the plethora of relationships with women during a brother's lifetime both good and bad, positive and negative, but Totally Truthful. Can't help but love and thoroughly appreciate Bobby Womack. Love this Brother. RIP and Thank You.

This song dates way back to Bessie Smith's "nobody knows you when you're down and out". its crazy how from the 20's, when her song was released, it would reflect all the way to the 70's (bobby's track). This context still remains relevant to this day. Damn.

you are ALL CORRECT!!!! Womack didn't really get all he was DUE. in this case, he took a STANDARD (this was a gem that had been around on the blues circuit for YEARS, covered by many including the GREATS Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith) and COMPLETELY made it his OWN. Womack did this all the time, turning another's tune into his own.... not easy to do, folks. And he wrote some gems, too!!! Rest easy, Mr. Womack
