13 June 2015 at RAF Northolt, Ruislip, London
The #BoBPoles campaign was launched at the RAF Northolt Centenary Open Day, which was attended by a number of Polish veterans and their families.
Among those present was Colonel Franciszek Kornicki - one of two surviving No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron pilots and the last surviving wartime Polish Air Force squadron commander who led No. 308 and No. 317 squadrons in the years following the Battle of Britain.
145 Polish fighter pilots served in the Battle of Britain in 302 and 303 Polish squadrons as well as in British units.
Out of the overall number of fighter pilots from Allied countries, they constituted the second largest contingent after the British.
By the end of the war, almost 20,000 Polish airmen and airwomen were serving in the Polish Air Force in Britain.
As part of the #BoBPoles project, the Polish Embassy co-financed the repainting of an historic Hurricane in the legendary No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron paint scheme. Together with an original Spitfire flown by No. 315 and No. 317 pilots, including Col Kornicki, it will take part in a number of Battle of Britain 75th anniversary events throughout the summer. Thank you Poland. According to Air Chief Marshal Tedder, the Battle of Britain might not have been won without Squadron 303. I am eternally grateful that I was saved from Hitler, and full of shame that Poland was abandoned to Stalin.

born in South Ruislip with RAF Northolt at its southern edge, I learned of these men from a very young age and developed a deep respect and gratitude for them. The most fearsome, skilled and deadly fighter pilots of them all, their contribution far outweighed their numbers, a debt we can never repay. They are Polish hero's but they are British hero's too. They will never be forgotten.

Oh how the Poles were mocked in the film " the battle of Britain" , yet their contribution , in terms of the lateness of their arrival into the battle of Britain and number of kills , suggests that a fairer mention should have been made in the end credits of the aforementioned film

I've only just found this video, I've written to the Polish department of the RAF Northolt Ruislip as I'm desperate to try and track down my Grandfather's service history. Are any of these wonderful men still alive today? I would be amazed if they were as my Grandfather was born in 1912 😔 but it was worth asking. Unfortunately he passed before I was born and nobody knows anything about him.. it is my mission to find out 💓 what a wonderful and beautiful video. Thankyou Poland ❣️

The Polish Air Force at War by Jerzy B. Cynk. Two volume set. Was able to find a friend listed in it. He flew with 315 just after the Battle of Britain. Lists pretty much all active pilots through the war years. Was able to find more through his individual squadron by doing searches online and a book specific to 315 Sq.

I hope that someone someday will make a movie based on those events (no soap opera cap in it) to show world what Poles really did, I hope that veterans will be able to see it and give advice to film makers before they'll leave us to fly again for eternity.

I’m sure that Hollywood is not interested in making a movie portraying Poles as heroes. Hollywood producers will not miss an opportunity for show Poles as antisemites, though. That would fit in the narrative that Hollywood promotes

My paternal grandmother had a couple of young Polish pilots billeted with her during the war and she always spoke to my brother and I of the respect she had for the bravery of the Polish pilots and it has rubbed off on me. Not only were they polite and respectful to a fault, they were entertaining company when they were off duty, they were fine brave young men and they were brilliant fighter pilots. Their hatred for the enemy was always to the fore and all of us who were born after the war owe them a debt of gratitude for the freedom we enjoy today. It is to Winston Churchill's eternal shame that the Polish contribution to the war was not properly recognised in the victory parade at the end of the war.
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684

All very interesting, but what is "Churchill's shame"? The Fact that he fought tooth and nail for Polish democracy at the end of WW2, and it was Stalin with his 12.4 million strong Red army that reneged on the Yalta agreement seems to have bypassed your knowledge. Short of launching WW3 immediately against the Soviets (which Churchill had ordered plans for - see "operation unthinkable") his resolve was vetoed by the US who were the senior party in the west. His failure to secure Polish liberty was a tragedy that Churchill never forgot, so much so that the UK government IMMEDIATELY passed the 1947 Polish resettlement act that granted FULL UK residency and citizenship rights to ALL Polish service personnel that had fought in the British armed forces during WW2 (together with their families), and while some Poles CHOSE to return to their homeland (a decision they all subsequently regretted) NONE were forcibly repatriated by Britain.

The poles pilots did more than their share in the Battle of Britain. The same was done by the Poles on North Africa (Popski’s Private Army) and all the way through Italy. I cannot understand why they were deliberately excluded from the VE March In London. I know that the reason was to not confront/insult Stalin. But it still was an awful deed. The allies entered the war because of the invasion of Poland and its painful to see how they were not recognised at its end.
@christinemcclymont269

Exactly! Fancy the Brits kowtowing to Stalin after the Poles had proved such strong allies!
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684

The Poles were not some genetically bred form of "super" pilots, they'd simply gained more combat experience since Sept 1939, and as a result of their previous hard fought battles with the luftwaffe only the most succesful & resourceful Polish pilots had made it first to France and then to Great Britain, the less successful ones had already tragically perished or been captured, also remember that 303 sqd's highest scoring pilot, Josef František, was a Czech. As soon as the rest of the RAF pilots had gained more experience there was NO difference in skill levels, as is witnessed by the kill tallies at the end of WW2. Luckily for the Poles they were provided with world class fighter aircraft that were directed by world beating radar and defensive control systems courtesy of the RAF and the British taxpayer, rather than having to fly standing patrols and flying to their deaths in the likes of the PZL P.7. The charge of "not being invited to the victory parade in 1946" was inextricably linked to the concurrent east-west negotiations over the future of post war Europe, and in particular to the British desire to see democracy restored to post war Poland. The only way of achieving that goal (short of initiating a WW3 nuclear holocaust against the 12.4 million soldiers of the Red army stationed east of the "iron curtain") was negotiation with the "liberators" of Poland, the USSR, who were VERY wary of any burgeoning nationalist causes in eastern Europe, and while many Poles were invited as individuals to the parade, it was felt that Polish UNITS marching under Polish national flags in London would only damage or derail those ongoing fragile negotiations. As events turned out the Soviets stood firm and Poland remained a Soviet puppet state until 1989, as a result of the post war breakdown in those negotiations ALL Polish service personnel who served in the British armed forces during WW2 (and their families) were given FULL UK residency and citizenship rights, as witnessed by the UK 1947 Polish Resettlement Act, and though some Poles did choose to return to their homeland post WW2, the accounts I've read seem to indicate the majority regretted that decision, and NONE of the 178000 Polish service Personnel in Britain in 1945 were forcibly repatriated. We Brits are nevertheless still most appreciative of their important contribution to our collective victory against the horrors of European totalitarianism (indeed they are SPECIFICALLY honoured EVERY year at EVERY UK remembrance day parade I have attended since the 1970s), though it must still be remembered that >75% of Fighter command pilots in the battle were of British birth.

I find that disrespectful of the raf,mod,British government,the queen not to allow the polish air force to take all the spitfires, hurricanes bk to Poland where they can be in polish airshow to show the polish children them two beautiful planes in the skies over Poland and build one plane of each airforce as a flying memorial to the polish poilets in the RAF like the mosquito,lancaster,Wellington,typhoon and so on like they do here in England with the spitfires,hurricanes and the Lancaster bomber in the bob memorial flight

That is what I have heard aswell. Polish gold evacuated from our banks in the begining of the war has been keep by Uk as a payemnt for renting the planes and airfields. That has not been verified to me by any document. Sad if true, but life is not far and between common people there is a great understanding of each other. Good bless GB!
