13 June 2015 at RAF Northolt, Ruislip, London
The #BoBPoles campaign was launched at the RAF Northolt Centenary Open Day, which was attended by a number of Polish veterans and their families.
Among those present was Colonel Franciszek Kornicki - one of two surviving No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron pilots and the last surviving wartime Polish Air Force squadron commander who led No. 308 and No. 317 squadrons in the years following the Battle of Britain.
145 Polish fighter pilots served in the Battle of Britain in 302 and 303 Polish squadrons as well as in British units.
Out of the overall number of fighter pilots from Allied countries, they constituted the second largest contingent after the British.
By the end of the war, almost 20,000 Polish airmen and airwomen were serving in the Polish Air Force in Britain.
As part of the #BoBPoles project, the Polish Embassy co-financed the repainting of an historic Hurricane in the legendary No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron paint scheme. Together with an original Spitfire flown by No. 315 and No. 317 pilots, including Col Kornicki, it will take part in a number of Battle of Britain 75th anniversary events throughout the summer.
