JRB, if you weight sort the brass, then h2o volume sort it, weight sort your primers, re-sort your bullets by base to ogive length in addition to weight sorting them and just for good measure you should also OAL sort them. Then remove the suppressor and chronograph, completely clean the weapon and fire 3-5 foulers then measure the fouling density inside the barrel between different component tests. I think you could get your groups down 0.1" .. :) j/k bro, hopefully that was clear :) Amazing job as always.... Build that bench. I love mine
I love your commitment to the geekology, I have to chuckle. By the time you get them all measured and sorted by weight, length, and surface imperfections you could have purchased sierra match kings. Just sayin'. But please don't stop. I love the videos and it's great that you're sharing so that we don't have to suffer. Now I'm feeling guilty and may have to patreon you.
25 grains of h335 loaded at 2.26 with a mild crimp and CCI 400 primers have been a consistent 1 moa group with mixed brass out of my AR. My rifle is a APOC armory bolt with a faxon .223 wylde match barrel with 5r rifling. I've been happy with it
Great vid JRB, it looks like 26 grains of Varget and 26 grains of N140 are good shooters for you. That is the same charge I am seeing my best groups with also. Like I said yesterday, I look at this 8¢ bullet as a good quality Match(ish) bulk bullet. I have been able to shoot several groups anywhere between .50 to .75. With Varget and N140. while that matches the performance of top quality Match bullets, I also just can't shoot it consistently like I can with other name brand match bullets. With this bullet it seems I have one or two that stray a little to open the groups up to around an inch, it just doesn't carry the consistency of SMK, Berger, Lapua ETC. And at 8¢ a piece I don't really expect them to. I am ok with a 1 minute 8¢ bulk plinking bullet that also lays down an occasional sweet group. Don't beat yourself up JRB, your shooting great. A bench will help some, removing the chronograph that hangs of your barrel will help some, but at some point it is the bullet and how it shoots in your rifle. If you were to shoot 69 SMK with 25 grains of Varget or 77 SMK with 24 grains of Varget you would be right back to shooting consistent .50-.75" groups. Thanks for all the great Vids.
I really appreciate your daily videos this month. They have become my first watched videos of the day. Great stuff! I would love to see another video on the 6.5 Grendel soon. Keep up the good work!
Scope cam distracting. Solid bench is a great idea. Since you are testing for accuracy, it would be a good move to invest in a solid rifle rest as well.
Johnny, really great testing, reporting and commentary! One possible other sorting might be by freebore length but I have yet to find it very critical at 100 yard ranges. My 223 testing is done at 108 yards just because that is where our club's furtherest back stop is. One thing that I really like in analyzing 5 and 10 shot groups is to calculate the center point of the groups and to calculate the average radius from those center points. That tends to somewhat factor out the "flyers". I also record the max spreads. There are some apps to do these measurements but they can be done manually however that is tedious and boring work. Again, I think you are doing a great job! John
Watching lot of your 223 series here i came to exact conclusion you did in your final comments., for the amount of time you put into the details of these loads; to shoot without a proper rest likely clouds a lot of your results.
Well, he did have a group with the Federal Brass, CCI 41 primers and Varget that came in at a .58" group. But I don't think he used that combination since the first day. That may be something he should revisit it and do more testing with that combination and see if it holds up. For plinking ammo that would be a great shooting combination if it does hold up.
Awesome video like always. Your a huge inspiration for me and learned a lot with reloading and also my channel. Benchmark i have never had good luck with. Varget and H335 are my 2 go to powders for 223.
I bought a GG&G bipod because of you're videos. I haven't shot with it yet but I'm liking it so far. The only thing I'd request seeing would be a shot of the powders either in the lid or your scale pan.
I've been getting outstanding results with IMR4064 in my 16" Armalite 223 Wylde 1/8 twist. I use hornady 55 grain FMJ/C as well as hornady 55 grain SP/C as they are both $9.99/100 ct at Sportsman's warehouse. I get good accuracy and AR function from the minimum of 24.5g up to 26.0g. In LC brass I can fit 26.5g which is the max in my manual and I'm looking forward to trying it out. I also get good results using Nosler varmageddon 53 grain. I also get .5 moa regularly in my 22-250 and 243 using IMR4064 and the same 22 cal bullets and 55 grain varmageddon in my 243.
just wanted to give my input on the scope cam. I voted ditch it, even though I find it interesting. I'm not sure it gives much more to the projects you work on and how you approach your videos. I enjoy the two camera set up, watching the rifle and the targets downrange. That is a lot of fun! The scope cam, being a bit out of focus and a little bouncy seems to be a distraction. That being said, I still think its cool in limited projects! Thanks for all the work you put into your channel!
Really impressed by the weight consistency! For a cheap ass bullet that's awesome. H322 for me so far shows promise, it started to shrink at the higher charges but from what I hear the sierra 69SMK shoots crazy awesome with the H322! Try that I know you like the sierra
If the scope cam had a clearer image it MIGHT be worth it. I find it distracting my attention from the groups which I am more interested in than the scope cam. Ditch it.
I've heard that benchmark is considered to be a good powder because it meters exceptionally well due to its small grain size. I've never used it, but I was wondering if you agree with that statement?
Weight & dia size I think are 2 most important factors. I'm sure you've already figured it out though. Another great video Johnny. I've been looking for a deer (under 125 yd) to shoot 80 gr .224 Midway bullet. H4895 23.5 grain 24 inch barrel. Should knock the snot out of deer w properly place shot. Thanks Johnny
Johnny - Do you notice any point of impact shift with the Magnetospeed installed? My experience is that my groups hit high with the Magnetospeed on my rifles. I shoot 5 round strings just for velocity data, then shoot 5 round strings for accuracy comparisons with the Magnetospeed off of the rifle when I am comparing powders and different powder charges.
For anything other than range plinkers the Bobs Bullets aren’t exactly selling themselves. If anything I think Bobs puts every other component into a bad light. You dedicate so much time and effort in your loading to produce amazing ammo and this was not good. I’d like to see the the whole thing done again but with a Sierra Blitz King or a Hornady Vmax see how the components do with a better bullet.
I think the shooting bench is a great idea. If I had the land I would definitely have as much shooting range as I could fit in it. I like the scope camera but maybe you could use a rifle set up slightly to the side of you so that the recoil didn't screw with the footage ? Maybe use it with the spotting scope for a really clear picture
Bench video, yes Chainsaw range yes scope cam good idea, need more resolution. Hornady 75 gn BTHP match, when you do the MK 262 video. These are the best videos on reloading out there! Thanks.
I know this is a long shot but I have not seen you try any H4895 at 25.3 grains with Bobs 55 Grn. FMJ. OAL 2.212 I would be curious to see how this load shoots for you. As always keep up the great work!! Like watching your channels!!
Watching on a phone, not seeing a poll. If the scope camera was focused (resolution) at the target, it would be pretty cool. Not sure what that would do to your reticle image though. May make it horrendously blurry.
The target cam us great. Curious as many shots as you shoot at the bench have you ever looked at a chamber chiller. I am ordering one of the AA models for testing ladder loads. Great videos by the way.
You are trying to see if Bob’s bullets are accurate, why not compare a known 55 gr bullet in the mix? You might be trying to make a silk purse from a sows ear.
used one of your loads for a hornady fmj 55 gr boat tail 1 and 9 twist 223 wylde barel that i gave $80 for it from sanders.com I use the same loads that you use in the cfe223 and h355 video and with CCI 41 primers, my best group was a .62 out of it useing the cfe 223 was very tickled lol.
What happened to the 3rd shot of the last group? I only see 4 holes in the paper and didn't see that 3rd shot hit in the same hole of the first 2 shots.
Scope cam is cool by me but not something needed other than to prove that you have a good aim on target. I'm ok with or without it. Keep up the great vids!,
The resolution isn't so great on the scope cam and doesn't really add anything to the video. A sold bench would probably really help your shooting. You always get a good group going then the 3rd or 4th shot is a flyer. As always great videos keep them coming !!!!
Hey Johnny I have never made any negative remarks, however, the camera shows why your groups are all over the place you are bouncing side to side. I did not like the camera, Thanks for your hard work, I love the videos
Not a huge fan of the scope cam, I find it slightly distracting, I think it's the resolution. I'm digging these Bob's videos, I'm interested to see if you can squeak an inch out of it
I think they are great but why not try another merhod? Load .2 from min to max and chrono at 300 yard target. Look for a cluster or velocity flat spot. Would be a cool change of pace!!!
I have watched every one of your videos this month. The Bob's bullets experiment preliminary read looks conclusive: If you want consistent groups under 1.00", change bullets. ;) I'm really looking forwad to the Sierra 135gr Varminter. Several folks have hopes for it being a good hunter at 300 BLK velocities since it's designed to explode out of a 308Win. Have you tried the Speer 125gr TNT bullet in your blackout?
I personally wouldn't waste another grain of powder on those bullets. You not going to find a consistent sub moa group from them. Also sorting a bulk bullet in a non sub moa load you will never see a improvement. If it was a consistent sub moa then bullets sorting could tighten it up.
I voted against the scope cam. Don't get me wrong, scope cams can be really cool. But, the tiny size in the corner of the screen doesn't really add much. The time, money, and effort you'd have to spend to improve that setup to something useful...well just imagine all the ammo you could load instead. :-)
i don't believe hundred of a grain of weight won't make any statistically significant difference. as people mentioned before 55gr is less than perfect weight for 1:7 twist barrel. i'm afraid no matter how much you tweak your charges 55gr just not well enough stabilized by 1:7 to get consistent sub-MOA groups. Also as far as statistics go, 5-shot groups is not large enough sample to see true performance. it's better than 3-shot groups but far less accurate (in statistical sense) than 10-shot group. I know it's probably too many rounds per sample for your style of testing, but i though i'd bring this up just in case. i would sort bullets by diameter. using micrometer and 3-click rule you would get extremely precise measurement, much more than you can get with calipers.
Mike Koz his barrel is 1:8 twist. Personally, I prefer 1:9 twist for my 5.56/223 barrels for the vast majority of my shooting, I don't go over 77gr, and the 77gr Berger LTB shoots great in the 1:9 twist, my 1:8 twist barrels do dang awesome with 55gr also though.
I've see all of the Bob's bullets. I've seen you shoot some great groups with other bullets. I would like to see you reshoot this with Sierra or Hornady bullets. It seems Bob's bullets either are not good quality or your barrel just don't like them. I believe it's a quality issue.
Strip all the toys off the gun you are getting weird vibrations bro sds in single digits should be 1 holers bar nun I am not a can fan try the gun stripped with solid mounts & luepold scope 1680 powder
