This guy used to go head to head with Skunk Baxter, and more than hold his own. One of THE most underrated guitarists of the last 50 years,
@ZedAlfa.
@ZedAlfa. 7 лет назад
Totally. He plays the electric sitar solo on Do It Again as well. And that's his guitar solo on the Aja title track.

Denny and Skunk were my favorite SD guitarists. They've had so many great guitarists over the years but Denny has such a complex, out of the box style that I sometimes feel gets overlooked. The solo in Do It Again always blows my mind every time I listen to it. The timing and phrasing are insane and I always find myself asking how the hell he came up with it. Then there's Skunk who is one of these guys who can play just about any style.

Back in '73 I never needed drugs to get high. I just dropped the needle on track one of "Countdown To Ecstasy" and Denny Dias and Skunk Baxter did the job.

@dennydias-id5jh You're welcome, sir. After watching Steely Dan on "The Midnight Special" in Feb. and Aug. of 1973, my wife and I thought you guys were one of the best live bands on the planet. That was confirmed on Sunday April 21, 1974, when we drove 90 miles north to the U. of Toledo and heard you tear the roof off the joint. The twin-lead guitars on "Bodhisattva," "Reelin' in the Years" and "King of the World" were something to behold that day. Can't thank you enough for putting that ad in The Village Voice back in the day.

Years ago I talked to a guy who worked around the Dan. He told me the difference between Denny & Skunk was that Denny played like he was wearing a piano, & Skunk played like he was whipping the dog.
@abergsten

Setting the record straight. Denny Dias placed an ad in the "Village Voice for a bass player and keyboard that must be able to play jazz. Walter and Donald answered that ad and went out to Denny's house to "audition" . They joined Denny's band, thus beginning there long relationship which lead to Steely Dan .
@raeloupied6193

Yes Andy the ad read. "Looking for keyboardist and bassist. Must have jazz chops! Assholes need not apply".

Yes Becker and Fagan responding to that ad was to my mind every bit as historically significant as McCartney going out to audition for Lennon and the quarrymen in the very early 60’s. Hard to imagine my life without either group that emerges from a simple audition

Just watched The Dan do Reelin on The Midnight Special. DD and the Skunk dueled out the middle solo as a dou and killed it. Speaking of 'under-rated' :Amazing is 81 year old John McLaughlin doing Stratus during The Jeff Beck tribute concert.

Comes a time when age gets the best of everyone. I can't do a lot of things, as good as I use to. But all things considered, I love this, and am thrilled to see DD on a stage playing SD songs again. "Hail" Denny Dias. one of the greats. And to the haters, learn to find the good in things.

@dennydias-id5jhAnd if this is the real you, I'm not joking when I say that I love this song. And I'm not a really HUGE Steely Dan fan, as to say I don't know every single song or even heard them all. I shy away from alot of jazz stuff but Bodhisattva is one of my favorite songs ever. I like to try and sing along with it and act like I'm doing the guitar part until reality sets in and then I'll switch to the drums. Then I'll start it over and do just the drums. On and on....I've had this track on repeat many many times for hours. Just a wonderful song. Heard it on Decades from one of my sisters record collections a long time ago and decided to get the album. Steely Dan really just has a whole lot of really really great tunes. I have them on a playlist of my favorites that I play for my young children so that they can experience what real music used to be like. But Bodhisattva, like I said is definitely in my top ten songs to bring with me on a deserted island. And it's really all about the song, but it is the guitar solo ending that really drives it home. Just utterly fantastic and ranked in the best guitar solos of all time in my humble opinion. Definitely my favorite solo..... even considering Page, Freebird, Hendrix, Trower, Eddie Van Halen, etc.. etc....on guitar. So thanks for it. And if you're not the real Denny....then thanks anyways lol...I got to share my opinion. 😊

The author of my two favourite Dan guitar solos (Your Gold Teeth II and Aja) and co-author with The Skunk (who really did turn out to be a bit smelly) of the two greatest expositions of twin-guitar playing I've ever heard (on this and King of the World).
