An amazing talent that is always a delight . Dick Hyman ranks among the greatest pianists of all time. He can play in any style. Author of "Compendium of Over 2000 Jazz Pianists"
More posts of Dick's eloquent and diverse piano style shuold be posted. Thanks for this one -featuring some stride. His many years of Jazz in July in NYC produced great evenings of multi themed Jazz played by the best and helped continue Dicks long history of keeping Jazz musicians working. Tatum called it right- a great talent.
@aardvaark069 I don't know if Baldwin does this today, but from my first hand observation when I was growing up, they would lend grands to prominent pianists indefinitely in exchange for being listed in their publicity as a "Baldwin Artist". But I must agree with your lament - Baldwins were never, ever, on a par with Steinways or Bosendorfers. I have yet to play a Baldwin I admired.
COMMENT on his name: I went to Jr High with his son his name was also Dick Hyman, but he was called "little Dick Hyman" by the way he is one of the most recorded pianist in all of Los Angeles and played any piano, he had dual Steinways at home, and everything in the studio, he wasted much time trying electronic keybooards that never met his standards
only number 2.... tatum comes before... however Hymen is probably tied also with Peterson for the number 2 spot.. both of them agree that Tatum is number 1, me too !
@aardvaark069 Think is more of a venue thing. No money for jazz.... There are recordings of Dick Hyman playing on a bosendorfer and its very good quality i have to admit. Well worth it!!
@aardvaark069 ahahah...:-) but what about the "Baldwin sound" of many and many Bill Evans recording sessions...?? Or maybe...under Evans' fingers also a table would sound fantastic...!!
Actually he famous for his ragtime, but seeing as how he is playing at Hotel Macklowe hes probably just playing what he thinks the audience will enjoy.
