Bodycam footage of Rayshard Brooks’ death shows calm, then chaos

The first 29 minutes don’t prepare you for the all-too-familiar tragedy that follows: a white police officer, a black male victim, lethal gunshots and questions about whether any of it was justified. It happened again in Atlanta Friday night, when Officer Garrett Rolfe fired three times at a fleeing Rayshard Brooks. Both men, 27 years old. The shooting would set off a stunning chain of events, culminating in the resignation early Saturday night by Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields. (Video edited by Ryon Horne, Christian Boone)

This was not about the man being black at all.

You’re right, this isn’t a case of racism. It is, however, another case of a trigger happy cop not being able to deescalate a situation properly. Even if he had gotten away you still have his car and all his information. He should’ve been jailed for this, not murdered. The reality is, the value of black life in a cops eyes is zero. The job is to protect and serve not to provoke and slaughter.

@@TheWildGiraffe Step 1: shoot the cop with the taser he grabbed. Step 2: grab the cop's gun and kill the cop. When a previous convict has this option in hand, I don't see how the cop has an alternative safe option that doesn't involve shooting. There were quite a few minutes of polite and calm conversations before the fight started, I really don't see how the cops didn't try deescalate the situation.

As someone that has lost a loved one due to the actions of a drunk driver, the fact that he was clearly intoxicated keeps getting glossed over. He had no business being behind the wheel of a car in his state of sobriety. The officer whose taser was stolen was aiming at his leg, Mr. Brooks was fleeing after assaulting them and had a high aim sight towards head neck level. Tragic turn of events but could have been completely avoided if he just wouldn’t have gotten behind the wheel and owned up to the fact he was too drunk to drive.

Andy Korpisah the second officer was trying his hardest to get brooks to understand what he was being arrested for. He never forced him to do anything and always made sure to ask brooks if he could help them with his situation. Brooks was unable to say anything coherently. They had to take him in. Nothing wrong with that. With the shooting, one of the officers was knocked down with the taser that brooks stole. The other was shot at in the head area with the taser. They risked letting brooks run free if they didn’t shoot. No other option.

Tasers like the one he stole and fired can be used exactly one time before they need to be reloaded. After firing the taser, he was essentially unarmed. The cops knew that and fired anyways. He wasn't just a non-lethal threat at that point, he was no threat at all.

If he had escaped, cops already had his information, so they knew where to find him. After turning around, while running, pointing and firing just a taser, cops know this man has no problem pointing a potential weapon at them. From being tased? It's not a life-threatening device, not unless you have a heart condition. And even if, there were two of them. You can only shoot one person with a taser, and you have to stay there and keep pulling the trigger for it to be effective, but first, you have to hit them with the prongs which is really difficult to do when you're running. Every cop knows this - they're trained for this. He was running away, so even if the officer had a heart condition, which I doubt because he wouldn't be on patrol duty, taser would never have hit him, or maybe have only stunned him for a second before the connection was severed by Brooks running away. And the cop knew this. Brooks died because the officer was too lazy to pursue him, and decided to shoot him instead. How's that ok with you?

Personally having discussed this in other comment threads I feel that shooting him was morally wrong for a number of reasons including, they had a second officer on scene, the weapon being fired at the officer was non lethal, they had his car and his ID so they knew who he was and that he wouldn't be able to drive away endangering others. With all this said, when you're an officer and the subject had previously resisted and he begins the turn to fire back at you, I could see how in the officers shoes, pulling the trigger might be borderline instinctual and also justified because theoretically the suspect could turn around and run for the gun. I don't think the officer should be punished and I suspect his defense will hold in court. But I personally don't feel good seeing an officer kill a man for something that COULD happen (IE grabbing a lethal firearm) particularly when the body language seemed to indicate the suspect wanted nothing more than to cover his escape. (His feet remain not only facing forward but moving forward as he pull his shoulder back to facilitate the shot. I agree with everyone else saying that this is not near the level of George Floyd and, like the Floyd incident, there is no evidence to suggest it was racist. Leave Wendys alone!

According to the fbi only 48 died from felonious activities (41 of the deaths were deemed completely accidental ie. things like car accidents). Statistically every driving person has a 1/77 chance of dying in a car accident. Every police officer has a 1/16,667 chance of dying. @@Thiefik121 Alright, I'll bite. give me a case in the past five years where that exact scenario took place. Drunk guy steals officer's tazer while running away, fires behind him without looking, then doubles back--all while drunk mind you--gets to said officer on the ground IF the tazer even hit him, then fumbles the officer's gun out of its holster (which can be difficult if he comes in at the wrong angle) and then pulls out his gun and shoots one or both officers. I'd be impressed if you could find anything like that happening EVER, much less in the past 5 years. Here are the facts: The man had a non-lethal weapon. He should not have resisted arrest. Resisting arrest does not warrant a death sentence. The man was not actively endangering the lives of the officers or the surrounding people, as he had a non-lethal weapon. The officer had a partner, even if the first officer had been tazed. The man was clearly shooting the tazer to gain distance and run away (Again which he definitely shouldn't have done but that doesn't warrant lethal force) and not to get control of a lethal weapon. He had plenty of chance to reach for the officer's weapon when they were wrestling, but instead went for the tazer. Clearly the man was not innocent, but the officer's lives were not in immediate danger and he was not actively a threat to anyone else. Those are the only two situations in which lethal force is warranted. Just a bit of discretion and trigger discipline could have made this death COMPLETELY avoidable. Sorry for the wall of text.

For anyone with no law enforcement experience, please READ THIS with an open mind and then put yourself in the officer's position> This definitely wasn't racial, I mean they treated the driver with full respect and compassion, even being concerned about his condition at the hospital. A taser is a "less" lethal option, NOT a 'non' lethal option. Cops are trained on how to PROPERLY USE a taser. You can see the guy shot it directly at the officer's face. Taser prongs are 2 inches long and could go into your eyes and blind and/or kill you. Now, consider this> they were only at the handcuffing process, so they wouldn't have conducted a full search of his person for weapons etc. With a full adrenaline dump, in one quick second the guy points the taser and fires it at the officer, and a taser deployment makes a loud bang, it's night time and there's a flashlight on the end of a taser which will blind your view of anything past the light in the dark. So under all that stress, and the split second action that the driver did when he turned and shot the taser, and the sound of a shot going off, don't think for a second that YOU would be able to see he was pointing a yellow taser and might not have drawn a firearm that he could've had on him the whole time. That, plus all of those actions are 100% consistent with someone running and pulling a firearm to shoot at police while fleeing, which police are conditioned to seeing on every similar video and some even from experience. PUT YOURSELF IN THAT POSITION, and tell me how YOU could have saved the day instead. This was not a George Floyd incident; this is 100% justified, but very, very unfortunate. And you could see the officer was compassionate from the beginning- something the media loves to edit out when police "murder" people acting violently and portraying deadly force against them. Police do not want to kill anyone, so stop believing the ridiculous media hype over what ONE idiot person does... and I say person, because any officer who intentionally causes death to someone IS NOT and NEVER WAS a 'police officer'.
