Because elevators have weight limits, there should be a scale or alert or something that happens so the elevator won’t move until the weight goes under the limit. How do we not have that in 2022
It was because the weight limit was exceeded. Elevators have a weight limit for a reason. It’s the amount an elevator can safely handle without getting stuck. Once some of that weight is released by someone trying to crawl out, it will start moving again. Always stay put until emergency help arrives. Prayers to the victim and his family. So sad.
they obviously aren't referring to it being exceeded at this particular time smh. if they were then someone is lying. do the math. typically it takes more than just people to exceed the weight of an elevator. even if the whole football team (11 players) were in that elevator they'd have to be an average of 272 lbs each to reach 3000lb, and to be over the limit by "nearly 1000lbs" they'd have to be over 350+ lbs each on average. To put it in perspective the average weight for a collage football player is 200lb and 245lb for NFL players. There's an extra roughly 2000lbs unaccounted for here based on those claims. So unless they had 1500-2000lbs worth of equipment with them they're likely referring to a previous incident.
no, I am sorry to say, it was not a weight issue...that elevator was in total disrepair before the event, it was acting up for a long time...the landlord & management ignored the city inspector's reports and did NOTHING to prevent the tragedy!!
ive been stuck in an elevator 3 times. when we were able to get the doors open one time, I jumped out as quickly as possible. I imagined this scenario of the car moving again as I was half in half out. Whoever owns this building is minutes from bankruptcy.
This. I’ve always been terrified at the idea of a cable elevator moving with the doors open. Today, I got stuck on an elevator for the first time. It was a cable elevator. Someone pried the doors open. All the videos I’ve watched of elevator malfunctions immediately came to mind. Most elevator deaths occur while getting on or off an elevator. Fortunately, most of those malfunctions also happen in China. And, I was not in China. The elevator did not move. But, that didn’t stop me from being ready to pull or shove my wife forcefully if necessary or spending as little time as physically possible in the door myself. I personally would have waited until someone finally came to get us. But, the group didn’t seem to be on the same page with me.
If an elevator is malfunctioning, staying inside the cab until someone trained to rescue you is the safest bet. It's inconvenient, but it's better than severe injury or death - elevators are no joke. If the floor of the cab does not line up and the doors are open, that's a really clear sign that you shouldn't go through the opening.
@@carnivorebear6582 this... It's so sad that people only want to get out of the elevator asap, while staying in there and wait for trained people is much safer ..
When I see that video of DeMarcus trying to climb out as the elevator is steadily going down I just wanna tell him to “go back bro, don’t try to come out.”
That weight limit being 1000 lbs over, wasn’t any help to a un-maintained elevator! And all that weight an the weight of the elevator was on him, sad way to die! May he RIP, An prayers to his family🙏🏼
@@jeffrender2399 she isn’t victim blaming , she is reiterating the facts that were presented while stating how sad it was and sending her condolences to the family.
@@jeffrender2399 it comes down to common sense.. on top of so many of them knowing the elevator was already half working.. would you get in car if it’s already on fire.. and just the old people use to say.. just because your friends jumping off a bridge, are you going to jump too.. May this King Rest In Peace.. and his family and friends get the strength they need..
16 people crowded in the elevator and no one thought to consider possibility ??? Awww hell no - That's a weight catastrophe waiting to happen. Hello stairs here I come
I was stuck in jr high in an elevator with 3 school mates. We randomly called rooms and pleaded for help. The front desk wouldn't answer. After ringing the emergency bell for 30 minutes and calling they finally answered. It would be over an hour for a repair man. Our teacher and other students got us out. We were stuck between floors too. Scarry!
It wasn't an accident. It was stupidity. Not by him necessarily, but by everyone on that elevator. It was like when that waterslide collapsed in Napa back in the 90s.
My sincere condolences to the family of this aspiring athlete! I am glad the family is doing their own investigation regarding this elevator. I wonder if the academy leadership ever made any safety announcements to the occupants regarding the weight [occupant capacity] for riding the elevator safely. This is very sad, and could have been prevented.
One thousand pounds over the weight limit? Not obeying instructions, no matter how sensible, and then being surprised when bad things happen is so American.
Wow, the elevator didn’t have any overweight warnings? I’ve been on an elevator that was over weight and a bell rings and the doors don’t close if it detects more weight than it’s designed for…At least that’s how it’s supposed to work.
Some of these comments are just sick. Yeah it was a dumb move. We all make mistakes we all have dumb moments especially at a young age. Doesn't mean he deserved it? Doesn't mean you can't show a little compassion for another human life? Y'all need therapy.
The inspection was up to date. Personally, I think the state is lying and they just haven’t sent someone out. I don’t think there is negligence, but is just a tragic accident. Why he even tried to get out is perplexing. Even if the cable snapped and it fell, it would only be two floors. And these young men should have known not to pile in like that.
Its perplexing that you are perplexed when someone tried to save his life but failed to do so Shame on you And by the way you must be 'white ' Someone lost his life Empathy is very expensive for some to show it
@@dikeledimoeletsi235 I was just saying that if he would have stayed in the elevator, he would have lived. It was a tragic accident and nothing more. Oh, and your a racist asshole for even bringing up skin color.
He said the inspection was not up to date. Theres many safety systems on an elevator even if the cables/belts were to snap, theres mechanisms in place to prevent the lift from freefalling. Here, the car is sliding through the brakes, meaning they were more than twice the full load of the car otherwise the counterweight wouldve balanced them out. Agree with the tragicness. This being a college, they shouldve known better.
@@dikeledimoeletsi235 So are you saying these heavy athletes don't have enough common sense not to pile like sardines into an elevator and then when it stalls, not smart enough to know not to scramble out when the elevator is still slowly moving?
lack of good judgement on these kids. You need to wait for emergency personnel whether its the facility maintenance or fire rescue to shut the power off the elevator and secure it before anyone is removed from the car. Seeing the car move that slow tells me that it was more than likely on emergency brake but due to the excess weight it didn't lock in place but was slowly descending. It would of rested on the bottom floor and everyone one would be alive.
How does the building manager know they were over the capacity weight for the elevator ? Was he there did he weigh them all? Just trying to get out of responsibility. Given it was overdue for inspection there a lawsuit right there.
Counting the numbers of persons there and supposing the the lightest has X weight, taking into account that they were all rugby players, and consequently had a high body mass, there were 16 persons in the elevator, and it obviously it was due to overcapacity as it it didn't break or fall, the elevator went down slowly because of the excessive weight and only had one death because the guy tried to get out the door while the elevator was going down, and as if he lying would change something when he has cameras and will have expertise to determine what happened
Yea, 16 people at 300 pounds each equals 4800 pounds. Most were his football playing friends who were solid muscle at solid weight. Hell, even 16 people at 150 pounds is risky. RIH to him.
Have you ever wondered how it can be stated "10 people or 800 kg" ? It's an average weight. You can count the persons and then multiply it with the average... Just saying.
@@synlezz9298 ok, so he was pinned inside the elevator? Why wouldn't he just say that then, because what he said doesn't make sense? You all really be believing this "news"
@@reneew2243 the elevator was sliding through the brakes. Meaning it was falling slowly due to the lift being overloaded. As it was falling the dude tried to get out. He got halfway out before he got trapped between top of the entrance (the car) and the landing floor. Pretty much like a guillotine scenario.
The elevator scissor effect. The walls and floor are stationary & the elevator can move, so if you get caught between them you're in the scissor effect. Make sure if an elevator starts to move when it isn't suppose to, be completely inside the elevator or risk getting scissored trying to get out.
I went to dragon con 1 year in Atlanta and I was on a elevator that was overloaded . It stopped between floors . Even though every one was drunk and high no one was stupid enough to try to climb out . Of coarse now the parents want to sue some one .
@Al Ramz I was probably the only one who wasn't drunk and high . I said that cause that's what most people do at dragon con is party . Anyway when I got on the elevator I was only the 5th person on . When the elevator stopped at the next floor 10 or 12 people got on at the same time . You obviously missed the point . No one tried to open the elevator doors and climb out . People make bad choices everyday sometimes it even causes they're death . That doesn't mean that someone else should be finically responsible for there bad decisions. Have a great day anyway .
The three most responsible are: Dr.Sanjeev Kaila, Rajeev Kaila, and Erika Hernandez...it was on their watch, the elevators were acting up before the incident, the "overloaded" issue is irrelevant...they were warned by the certifying techs and did nothing!
Why would anyone try to wiggle through a closing gap like that? omg. doesn't everyone know how the safety brakes work on an elevator? even if ALL the cables snapped, it wont drop. I mean maybe you can sue, get a little money after making lawyers rich. maybe you can say you were right, you were the innocent victim etc. but none of that matters cuz you dead
Sadly this was just a horrible accident. You can’t blame the owner of the building because even if he was up to date with his yearly inspection. The weight limit was exceeded by 1,000 pounds... just a lesson we can all learn from this, don’t fit too many people on an elevator. Just wait or take the stairs.
It's a shame none of those dudes used their brains, everyone knows you don't overload an elevator, I knew what happened before they even said anything, they all contributed to his death, 16 people on an elevator, I'll take the stairs
@@thecoi7672 we dont know that the car could take 3000 pounds do we?inspections were out of date, age of the lift wasnt given maybe it was 3000 pounds after the time of install but even if it was 4500 pounds, you can see the car was sliding tnrough brakes here meaning they were either more than twice the full load weight of the car, otherwise the counterweight wouldve balanced them or the brakes were on the way out. In the video you can see they were crammed inside that car....putting two and two together here...maybe a combination of both product maintenance and human behaviour? Dunno but I see a car crammed with people like sardines in a can and the car falling slowly means they were definitely heavier than the counterweight
Kids do dumb stuff together & lack so much common sense because seem to lack the capacity of understanding worse case scenario. I hope I have instilled that in my kids to expect the unexpected cause it has to happen to someone! Damn
The property manager is a bad liar, and anyone taking his claims as truth is very fucking stupid. Only way this "exceeded weight limit" allegation could be true is if they were referring to a previous incident, but that's even more unlikely because knowing that would make them culpable. It's common sense and basic math... An elevator like this can fit about 11 average sized people, and a football team has 11 players. For arguments sake lets say they could somehow squeeze in every player. The average collage player weighs 200lb, so that would be roughly 2200lb on that elevator. Lets be generous and say this team is built like an NFL team. That's still only about 2700lb. There isn't even room left for equipment but again being generous lets say the could fit their gear (helmet, pads, clothing, etc). Full gear is 15lb on average, so about 165lb between them. That's still less than 3000lb and no where near the "nearly 1000lb" over limit that's claimed.
How very sad and I hope this is a lesson to all kids that want to do silly thinks like this, very very sad and he wanted to maybe prove something to his friends to be funny trying to get out like that, and he didn’t make it. It must have been horrifying for him and his friends to watch!
you seem to lack simple intelligence.... the elevator malfunctioned , they were trying to get out when it started moving and he was already in motion and he didnt want to get stuck on it, he was trapped... what silly fun thing or stunt you thought was happening ? you really cant be that stupid or then again, its not a surprise
Sorry I could not help but with Dad giving me grief and still getting over the crucifiction...it has been a long 2 thousand years....I will see you in about 3 million years...or more. Ciao!
Sorry but why do something that stupid?I can't imagine thinking to myself I'll get off the elevator while it's down in between floors and lowering slowly and just kinda crawl out while it's lowering I'm sorry but use your head
Awe this is horrible, I hope his parents sue the school, and city. What happened is disgusting and there is people who are responsible and need to pay his family. Nothing will bring him back to his family but someone needs to pay out.
The weight limit was 3000 lbs. They had so many people in it, it was 4000 lbs on it. They didn't care about the weight limit that was probably properly displayed. Why should they be responsible? It's just like a car. Should the car maker be responsible when you drive drunk or text while driving and kill someone? Answer...no.
Lmao, sue the school and city? ALL elevators in the world have a max capacity, they exceeded the maximum capacity, how it's school/city fault? The only people responsible for this were them, putting 16 players at once in an elevator, every elevator has a sign saying the weight/people limit.
