About Maniacs Garage and its creator:
My name is John. Over the past few decades I have built some pretty crazy rides and this one may be the craziest! After spending the last 15 years working on my Real Estate business, raising a family and help plant a start up church, I am ready to embark, along with my son and a group of friends, on a new project.
However, this is not just any old project, we are going to attempt the first ever 1949 Ford Shoebox chassis swap to a 2008 BMW 335i.
Keep in mind that we don't do this for a living and the budget is very limited.

Man I love the idea of putting a wanted body on a car that is random I really wish somebody would help me with that I'd love to put a Dodge Challenger body on to my hyudia azera but make it a 4 door dodge challenger which would make it extra special to me.

I had a 1950 Ford, just like the one in Thunder Road that Robert Mitchum drove. I bored the engine out 3/8 of inch in Shop Class, Stoke it 1/4 with a Mercury Crankshaft, had 3 Crabs for a while until I saw how much gas it used. I had to Overhaul the 3 spd Trans eleven times, to much power. Great fun has teenager!

That's not the biggest problem, the biggest problem is why Ford body wasn't washed from rust and old paint before mixing it with BMW platform? Even european and asian know how to do that, but this guys for some reason just left it like this.

Maybe if you learned the facts first you would know that this car was all cut up by a previous owner over 20 years ago and has been sitting in a garage as a rolling chassis with no motor, trans, glass or interior with lots of rust and rotting away. So in essence we gave it a new life, thus the name @Born49ain (stands for Born Again). Thanks for watching!

@@jameshankssr466 Well, you know what they say about opinions (everyone has one) lol. Did you not see the part about the car already being chopped 20 years before I picked it up? It was never going to be a classic at that point. Besides, maybe not every old car needs to be saved. Do you even realized what created the incredible car culture we experience in the US today? The GI's who came home after WWII and started tearing old 30's cars apart. Customizing them, racing them and cruising them around,.. seemingly pointlessly. Yet, that is what became a multi Billion Dollar industry today! So I think you need to give some grace, if everyone liked the same thing, it would be a boring world!!

I love builds but, however, I think I wouldn't used a BMW. Maybe cut up a Marauder or crown vic or Grand Marque to use as a donor. Pluck a damn foreign car.! Scrap the idea, tube it out and convert it to a Coyote and T 56 magnum,curry 9"......

Is such a car (coolest thing I have seen in a long time by the way) roadworthy at all in the US? Here in Europe, at least in most countries on the old continent, there is no way they would let this out into the traffic.

Yessir it's not a problem in North America. The VIN is a BMW so it's just a BMW nothing more nothing less. In some areas you have to get a mechanic to say that the brakes, suspension etc is good every year or just when the vehicle changes hands, and some places not even that.

Thanks but that has been done a million times. Why would we want to go through all of this and make it look like all the rest. Where would the creative be there? The very first inspection for this build was to have exaggerated wheels, chop, raw body and turbo through the hood. Make sure you check out the latest videos to see how it looks now. Hi, I've been watching this build over and over for years. I don't remember seeing how you did the hood hinges, and I'm currently struggling with hinges on a 51 plymouth to toyota camry swap. Would you mind sharing what you did?

Took a clapped out, POS '49 Ford, that would most likely NEVER have been rebuilt or restored, and did something truly bad ass with it! Kudos, guys. This is outstanding! Love to see it completed.

Thank you and you are correct! This 49 Ford was sitting unfinished, incomplete and rusting slowly away in a garage for 20 years. So yes you could say that we saved it and turned it into something unique that will turn heads. Thank you for following the build!!

Nice explanation. One question. What is the car now registered as. In the UK the chassis is the car . So that would still be a BMW over here and police would think you got stolen. How does it work in the usa

Can't speak for the entire US, as it varies state by state but in Arizona it's pretty uncontrolled at this point. We had a clear title and VIN for the 49 Ford so we registered as that. In reality it probably should be registered as the chassis, which is technically most of the car but my feeling is that if a cop runs the plates and it comes up as 2008 BMW I'm definitely getting pulled over. However, if it comes up as 49 Ford, which is what it looks like, it should be more believable. Thanks for watching and commenting!!

The plate matches the 49 VIN. As far as the law is concerned it has a BMW engine in it. Engine swaps are legal in most states, including AZ, where we are. In fact we don't even need to smog cars in our area (yet LOL). But a 49 you donlt have to smog anyway. Thanks for watching!!

The whole inspiration for this car was to build custom wide fenders and run wheels as wide as possible. The car was meant to be outrageous and not a clean tucked wheel look that's been done many time over. We do appreciate your comment and we completely get that it's not for everyone.

Thanks for the SUB!! It's already registered as a 49 Ford. It had a clear title and the vin transferred with the body swap. It's really not much different than an old car with an engine swap, just this one also has the suspension swapped and the AC and the heater. lol

What type of schooling will teach me the right skills to build a few cars for myself? Mechanic or collision?

That all depends on what kind of cars you want to build. Mechanic is probably the best way to start. Some welding classes would be super valuable as well. Maybe then some collision classes? None of us have had formal training, just lots and lots of life experience, practice, and trial & error. Can't be afraid to fail; sometimes you'll have to redo something multiple times. Be patient. I have a mechanic who my family is loyal to so I don’t plan on replacing him, I just want to do custom body work but I have to go to school because I don’t have the resources yet for experimenting

We appreciate you comment and agree that the car would have looked sleaker with wheels that tucked. However, the plan was all along to have really wide wheels to go along with the wild aero, etc. Check out some of the newer videos on the channel to see how it looks currently. Also, a little top secret info: we are working on an differnt set of fenders that we think will make a difference for the better.

We respect your opinion and agree that it would have looked sweet with wheels that tucked. However, the plan was all along to go super wide. It is a critical component of the Mad Max/Road Racer look. We'll tuck the wheels on the 62 Mercury project.

As the saying goes "To each their own". Those wheels were specially built for this project. They are forged one off 20x14 rear & 20x12 front that are now in production as a cast wheel. The wheels were built for this car by Hostile Wheels and the car was displayed at the SEMA show last year in their booth. They are now offering these wheels to the public and call them "The Maniac", after us. There are litteraly a million other choices for wheels but when you connect with the wheel manufacturer and they are willing to make some one off wheels, hook you up with two sets (wrapped in Toyo's) and make it awailable to the public after, you go with them. Besides, we think they are dope (20x12 on front and 20x14 on rear).

Much respect on the labor but should have kept it in the family. A body swap on a Mustang or sporty Lincoln would have been best imho. BMWs powertrains dont last, are a pita to maintain & require too many special tools to service. If deadset on going German a Mercedes skateboard would have been leaps & bounds better craftsmanship & build quality but still a pita to service.

Thanks for your comment. We've seen a very nicely done 50 Ford get swapped onto a modern 5.0 Mustang and it's sweet but we were going for a wild controversial build that people want to shake their heards. And judging how well it did at the SEMA Show in Vegas and how it's been shared on all social platforms, we achived what we set out to do. Also, if you are familiar with the N54 (the 6 cylinder twin turbo engine that came stock oin the 335i that we used for the donor car, you'll know that it is capable of a ton a power. I do agree that BMW, once over 100K-150K can definitely cost a few bucks to maintain (trust me, I know, we own several Bimmers LOL). But then again aren't most cars made now crap after that many miles too? Unless you got a Toyota truck! Which I just picked up, tune in for some mild upgrades we'll feature soon! Thanks for the inspirational video. I actually plan to swab the body of my Simca Versailles 1957 to the Volvo 940. The wheelbase is important but from the video, I notice that It is also important to ensure the distance from pillar A to the rear axle of both cars prior to joining the body shell. Am I right?

The rollers were pretty cool but they were trashed form when the BMW was salvaged. Besides, they needed to be about twice as wide for the mods we planned. The wheels we decided on, as controversial as they are, were custom built for this car. They are a one off forged set that are now being offered in a cast version (..and they are called the "Hostile Maniacs"). You can check them out at www.hostilewheels.com

I can’t see how those wheels sticking out can be remedied without using ridiculous flares and I just discovered this video,I’m assuming this model BMW has a V8 ,right? Otherwise it’ll sound as bad as it’s going to look.

The fenders may get redone at some point. It does have the 3.0 six cylinder inline with a 62mm turbo andn Motiv Reflex Plus electronics. It's going to the dyno next week so we'll see where she ends up.
