Casper, Wyoming - On June 6, 2024, at approximately 9:30 pm, multiple officers with the Casper Police Department responded to a call for service regarding a disturbance in the 5000 Block of Pay It Forward Drive, located in the city of Casper.
Officers spoke with the victim on scene, who made allegations that she was victim of domestic violence. Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect for 5 minutes. After all attempts to contact the suspect failed, officers returned to speak with the victim.
In need of personal items from her home, the victim requested to enter the residence. To ensure her safety, officers accompanied her.
Upon entering the residence, the officers found the suspect Identified as Army veteran Trae Stewart Spurlock, 26 sitting on the balcony with a rifle next to him on the ground.
Officers attempted to arrest Spurlock for simple domestic assault but Spurlock opened the slide door and turned rapidly back towards rifle and was subsequently shot by an officer. The officers immediately began first aid efforts and Spurlock was transported by ambulance to Banner Wyoming Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased. No police officers were injured during this event.
The officer fired seven times and Spurlock was struck six times police said.
Casper Police stated: “The men and women of the Casper police department are sensitive to the challenges and difficulties faced by the combat veterans of our nation. Indeed many combat veterans are employed in service to our community at your police department,”
