This is such an epic fail. Man, this makes me really mad. They just built it without really referencing his physiology. I can see the disappointment in everybody's faces. Just sad.
@Dirtyd23 But a mind controlled prosthetic arm isn't a new idea. You'd think with that 5-digit figure they sank into making the arm, they'd get some people who knew exactly what they were doing to work on it, and not someone who kinda did, but is still experimenting
This is honestly like the worst possible approach to design. They didn't even test it on him as they were building it. Shame on them for leading him to believe that it would actually be a useful tool for everyday use.
+Alexander Lee Yeah, I have to agree with you, it seems like the designers didn't have any communication and trials at all before just presenting it to him, unfinished... "Tada!"
Hopefully they continue to help him and make it work better for him over time (and I'm sure he'll get more used to the muscle controls in time as well)
I feel like they just went about this all wrong. Their damn photo shoot should have been scheduled far later. It seems pretty obvious the prosthetic was going to need tweeking even if it did work more like it was meant to. Even the simplest prosthetics can have an adjustment phase and this was supposed to be far more advanced than that. Hopefully it all works out in the end but it seems pretty disgraceful for Konami to just assume it would go according to plan.
"The arm...its not ready. Its been forced into the public eye." Sound like the production for MGSV:TPP, good to see that Konami haven't changed their production methods.
My buddy was taking the shock spring off his car and he didn't tighten it correctly beforehand and it shot up and knocked all his teeth out, broke his jaw in 8 places and went through the cat and his shop roof
Wait was that it? I mean its great he gets to meet other people like him and get his confidence up but did they just use him as an advert and didnt even finish the thing. Thats low
No, he got to model* a £70k arm that was advertised as being something it wasn't... I don't think he got to take it down to the local pawn shop after the absolute let down it was revealed to be, and get its weight in hopes and dreams...
May be a year late but i will hopefully shed some light on the "70K arm" Did you know a couple months after this video was released Konami abandoned the dude with an arm that began to malfunction, the lights went out after some software issues and then soon the fingers broke and apparently now the whole arm fails to work... £70K to £0 in a couple of months is terrible.
Lil Koi Kang this is months ago. Soon afterwards, there was nothing to get used to. The entire worthless, failure of a biological emmulator lost every miniscule quantity of function is held.
Bimon1234567 only if they ripped the wheels off your car when they put it on the show I mean sure you have a subwoofer in the back but yknow your car doesn't work right
What kind of toy did they give this guy? Its not even symmetrical. Only the hand works and feels like a last minute intern project. Bionix makes better arms than this.
Bottom line: The arm doesn't work, but I hope it makes me look cool. (It did look cool from the start, but I'm a kid at heart) I hope he gets a better one.
Just like a real Konami game. It looks cool and awesome then you look at it and notice it performs like shit, has bugs, and you need to pay them again to add something to make it playable.
That's really sad. He should talk to Hugh Herr about getting some workable bioms instead of some plastic LED covered aesthetic. They made him a heavy hunk of junk, and met a girl who had one that was great. Why he didn't throw the damn thing and join her company instead is beyond me. All the improvements were like "We stuck a laser light on it." Who gives a fuck?! Why do you need a laser light when you can't even shake someone's hand with it properly?
+ColdSpark824 As far as I know and what I've seen Hugh Herr is working on bionic legs, which are awesome but are not an arm :P Its mesmerising to watch them in action though
Watching the girl's bionic hand animate equally with her real one as she talks is one of the most promising and warming signs I've seen with prosthetics so far. To see it behaving naturally, just like her real one, shows that huge progress is being made, and that we're getting closer to straight up replacements every day. It makes me think that an entire bionic arm and shoulder for this man truly is possible. Just wonderful.
@kaymezRap You have no idea who she would or wouldn't date. Don't assume an attractive women would not date a disabled person. In fact many disabled people end up dating other disabled people because they understand the reality & because of close minded people like you.
kinda get the impression that the demo was a failure, they didn't get enough footage and ended up having to cobble some shots together at the last minute to make a video.
I loved how positive he was through all of this. he was smiling and looked so happy with everything that happened. it was heartwarming and pleasant. The convention where he met other people like him was amazing, everyone was so nice and sweet.
Nice of Konami to pony up for a prosthetic arm, but maybe they should have gone with engineers who actually know what they're doing? Movable prosthetic arms/hands aren't new technology. Making one that works, is sized properly, and fits the MGS theme would be as difficult as making a chassis for an already proven design...
@@BustasGirl1 Actually, having the prosthetic arm be equal in size as his physical arm is important, as the bigger and thus heavier the artificial arm is; the more strain it can put on his, neck, back, etc, as his body has to constantly compensate for the extra weight on that side of the body. It's also psychologically important as, part of what causes phantom pain in the extremities of amputees, is the difference between what the have on their amputated portions of their body, and the areas that are not amputated. This can be seen in the fact that, mirror therapy which has the individual look at a reflection of their non amputated limb(s) in a mirror; which helps trick the mind into thinking both sides of the body still match up, resulting in phantom pains subsiding, and possibly going away.
This is what happens when you prioritize your social media campaign over someone's actual well being. This guy seems like such a nice person and they basically used him for attention, instead of giving him something to help his life. I wish they could have proved his mother wrong, but she right to now show up for something like this. The woman in the video had an actual functioning arm and hand. And I can only guess realization he had when he say how great it was. I hope someone who actually wants to help him comes along because he deserves it.
The one girl who had that way more functional hand, was cute. Couldn't they have made an arm like hers, for him, which doesn't weigh a ton ect.? Also looks more Deux Ex than Metal Gear.
The reason why her arm works is because she has the lower arm which still has muscles to control the hand, he has no arm at all so they have to use other muscles that are not as specific.
Hopefully they actually improve on this prosthetic. It seems it's more cumbersome than his previous prosthetic given the weight and the improper sizing of the arm.
+j.c man Well, that's debatable. The thing's pretty heavy and has/had no hand-arm functionality. Aside from publicity it's literally just a bulky laser pointer and flashlight!
Despite them giving him the equivalent of a toy, he is getting a lot of support from a community that is much like him. That's sometimes much more important than the actual prosthetic. I'm glad to see this man is growing back a part of his soul that left with that train. Keep moving forward my friend, you have friends that support you. And thats the best thing you can get.
It's nice that he found someone like angel to connect with, but I feel like they played it up like they were in love... Didn't he say he was in a relationship in part one??
Amazing how far man has come. totally and utterly remarkable achievement. Not only that but inspiring and the connections he will make with people and mankind on the whole. We are heading into some beautiful times.
Sorry but it feels quite useless, more to look like a robot arm than to actually be, he seams to not be able to do anything with it, not even lift it up, a hook would be more usefull.
Lmfao Having a hook wouldn't magically make him able to lift it - the issue is creating a system for him to be able to lift it with only that little nub of flesh left at his shoulder.
Technical0Difficulty If he has any movement left in that stub he may be able to lift the hoog, if not he can at least hold stuff with it! That is why pirates have hooks not useless wood hands. If they one day make it usefull great, but for now seens more like something for show and propaganda than anything helpfull.
MrFantocan Lmfao A hook arm would just lay at his side too though, because he lacks the ligaments/forearm to twist and manipulate it xD That's why it works with "hook hands" and becomes more difficult with "hook entire-arms" I agree though, Konami should have made sure the project was fully functional before having their dramatic reveal. At least they're still working on it.
Technical0Difficulty You can put stuff on a hook, and carry them, that is usefull, like a bag, he can do groceries, and if he can move his stub up he can lift a light hook too (but I dont know if he can).
MrFantocan That's a fair point, considering that he even mentioned he busted the middle finger on that mechano-hand trying to lift two jugs of cider. No doubt a hook would be more useful in that sense. xD
First of all he needs to get the electronics linked to his bones, Then let the arm get made by decent company and not a TOY company, but i could really see this working... if its executed properly
That's such a good story man! Awesome looking arm that I hope they continue to develop and fix, so it will be perfect. And the best of all? Looks like you even found love :) Good luck!
That is one seriously cool looking arm. But what is even more obvious than the missing limbs, is just how damn awesome this kid is! Humble and Kind, Damaged and Hurt, Honest and Brave. Inspiring!
9:49 the sound of him putting the arm back on matches so well with the girl putting that camera to her face that I thought she smacked the camera off the glasses
Honestly, Body Hacking is great for people who have been in accidents, but we all know there will be people who will go too far and take there own limbs just to get robotic limbs.
For the prosthetic to work as an actual arm, I'd say that they'd need to actually graft some connectors to his bone, then connect the prosthesis to those connectors. Without doing that, I would think that the arm wouldn't be able to push, pull, or bear much force, and would just end up being a really bulky -and cool-looking- hand. Even the hand seems like it could maybe have functional improvements, but I can't really tell; he would know a lot better.
+Mshojat I think that the biggest problem for arm to work as normal arm are nerves, cause they are link to bran for sending commands etc etc =) it will take a lot of time to accomplished that
Not biggest, as forearm prosthesis users get on pretty well. But for me that's number 2 biggest problem, number 1 is that I need more arm, so need implants. :)
+James Young So the forearm amputees don't have any nerves to connect to either? How do they work then exactly, since they connect yours to your back? And is your current plan to get an upper arm prosthetic connected to your bone, and then a smaller bionic forearm?
Seems like the engineers working on the arm did so with very little involvement from James himself. The arm is a bit too big for s start, I would have thought getting the size right would be one of the easier things to do. It was a bit ridiculous going to a body hack conference without lengthy rehabilitation. Even if the arm worked correctly you would expect months or even years of rehabilitation... I know it's a PR stunt, but seeing them messing about with lasers and gyrocopters seems like the engineers were having all the fun trying to make a sci fi robot arm rather than something that actually works. Of course the biggest issue is that he had no upper arm left to graft it to. Pretty difficult to make prostheses for people that have nothing solid to attach them to.
this little documentary is awesome just to think of what the future will hold for all the people like him and the human race in general and to see how far we have come but still how far we have to go
Yeah unless this goes all Deus Ex in the future the term really doesn't apply. Hacking is about making a system do something it's not supposed to. This is more like recovering something that's already been lost.
kids on the schoolyard: "wow they made a robot arm like in the game aawesome." me: "stop the bs, and find a way to connect it directly to his arm nerv so he can use it, and make it carbon. until then you should make a pirates of the carribean version"
Omg a love story between cyborgs that got to know each other because of them being cyborgs, I've never actually felt this happy after watching a video in a long time. I want to know more now :DD
I'll give that a 100% yes. I lost my leg due to a motorbike accident and I get phantom pain every day. Most of the time it's general background which I can deal with but it's no where near as much as I use to but when I get and still do now n then. The way your muscles move is due to electrical impulses and it's those cut off nerve's that give you phantom pain. Just imagine having a cable that's dangling and keeps shorting out causing a massive short circuit day or night with no warning making you scream, shout and swear at the top of your lungs making them red raw after a while. Then imagine that going on for a minimum of a few hours to a 4-5 days and sometimes even more. Not being able to sleep, being completely exhausted, can't eat, can't think, can't concentrate, sip a drink and just waiting for it to be over so I can get back to my "normal" life of dealing with my brain injury because of it. There's also so many other things that happen to my body but it'll take me hours n hours to explain. It'll be coming up to 6yrs since my accident and I still can't wear a leg due to my pelvis being so badly damaged. He's luck (we'll, no one's lucky if you loose a limb and I've come across a few people far far worse then you n eye) its below knee and has got the bottom half of his leg, mines pretty much like his arm. My stump is an inch or two below my groin (max!) but saying that. I'd much rather loose both of my legs then one arm anyday. I said something loads of times before my accident (being extremely morbid) saying that if I could loose one limb it'd be my left leg so I could still drive an auto. What I didn't realize is that I can't ride a motorbike unless there's someone to launch and catch me incase I drop the bike. There's 2 things I really loved doing before my accident. Riding my bike and working. Neither of I can do now. The joys of being a biker
