Indeed. It's the choice between "weird-looking arm" and "cool robot arm". And that outside perception makes one hell of a difference to the ones wearing them.
I agree, but these kind of arms cost way more. I have a "realistic" myoelectric arm that cost the state between $4k to $8k (Great healthcare here, the state payed it all themselves). While one of these could cost up to around $20k, which you most likely would have to pay out of your own pocket.
I can not even find a reason why good looking prosthetics need to be more or that much more expensive. It is a shame if this is just a buiseness decision.
30k the cheapest and for the bebionic arms in this vid, which is pretty silly but companies like open bionic are creating cheaper and more efficient bionic arms that can cost around 600 dollars since they can be 3d printed.
Eh no we shouldn't. Do you want people walking around with potential weapons hidden inside their hand? A wine opener inside your hand could be used to stab you then your tone would soon change. Would perfectly healthy people start wanting to get their arms removed because they are now at a disadvantage? Think about the possible problems this could create in society. Thankfully there are smarter people than us working on this who realise it.
The first time a caveman picked up a rock he had a choice, make flour from grains or smash the head of your rival. This is what we do, we make ourselves better through technology, this is just an another step. We will overcome our biological limits, as individuals and as a species.
+Pjlskdhgsl Dsldkfjsldhg Same thing with nuclear technology. Man has the choice to use their knowledge for the good, or to use their knowledge to destroy their enemies
With all the agony, sense of loss and possibly grief and sorrow I am, and am sure many of us do, extremely happy and excited for these guys finding aid and attendance in their lives' situations. It is so good that technologies nowadays allow specialists to do enough research and study of human special needs and finally produce such functional and technically advanced prosthetics! Wonderful!👍👍👍
6:31 definitely. If you can create a bionic arm that works 100% like a natural arm, but in addition got new functions, why would i want to keep my limited biological arm? I mean if senses of touch, heat, pain (up to a certain amount), arm movement and fine control are as good as a human arm, so you don't feel any difference, but then also finally are able to move the wrist 360° for a fast screw driving movement or move your fingers 2 times faster, precise and more powerful, i don't see why we shouldn't replace those limited biological limps.
Well, our arms were made by millions of years of evolution. Not having to charge your arm is a big plus. And your arm is, at least for now, much more flexible and useful for a lot of everyday tasks. Also, no technological malfunctions, and your hand can't get hacked into. Getting rid of your perfectly good arm is a bad decision to make, in my opinion. And I would be surprised if they just started handing out extremely strong bionic arms. Humanity is unpredictable, and people could die if a psychopath got his hands on one. To clarify, I'm not against bionics. If you've lost a limb, then sure, get a bionic one! But don't get rid of a perfectly good arm just to get a shiny new bionic one. Plus, fingerprints! You might want to keep those. And good sense of touch! There's another one. And your reactions are much smoother and more natural.
We’re coming close to where bionic limbs will become life-like just like anime. Where you can react and act quickly like Genos from “One Punch Man” for example.
I was also born without a right hand. This looks really cool but I don't think I'll pursue getting a prosthetic until I can actually control the thing like a real hand. I've had less advanced ones that you also control with the electrodes like this one and it just feels too limiting, there's basically just on and off, opening or closing, there's no fine control. It feels like having a block of wood strapped to your arm.
I like Nicki. She's so down to earth..Despite having reason to, she's not on this bandwagon-fantasy of human evolutionary technogenisis. So many fully able people are 'forcing' this cymbiotic society concept.
I like how the one hand is removable from the prosthetic arm part ...I assume you could have special hand options depending on what you are doing....one could be a drill motor you totally control with your mind ....instead of moving fingers? The same mental commands would vary the speed or reverse the drill etc. Another attachment could be for printing or drawing...one command erases another changes ink color...could be stabilized via computer so lines are very smooth and clean...how about a guitar that you click onto robo arm rather than the robot hand ....instead of fingers on frets the mental commands operate guitar strings notes....maybe servos adjust a string's tension rather than a finger on a fret ....servo motors for each string! you brain selects notes by mentally telling the servos what to do....someone with two prosthetic hands could play without any mechanical fingers ...instead the mind controls the instrument directly...would that be awesome or what?
If I could get a super strong, super handy bionic arm id have this useless left arm off in a second. An arm like John Silver from treasure planet would be neat.
you guys really should interview Easton Lachappelle, he is a front runner in affordable prosthetics! uproxx.com/technology/easton-lachappelle-luminary/
i see bionic arms as a missed oportunity... why having an arm and being limited again, instead of having the actual tool in your arm and not having to grab it with a hand??
Isso sim é algo bom pro mundo, produzir próteses para as pessoas discapacitadas que que necessitam para sua saúde e para reemplazat o que falta. Parabéns.
If I ever lost a hand or arm or anything my last boss Cedric was.not going to keep me with my last job. He'd have fired me. Wal-Mart Neighborhood Marketplace. I was working as an Custodian for them!
Kevin Kristensen then women would have a room filled with 'pretty' hands arms and legs. Then if she asks for an I pad just say 'but Ipaid for all the other shit!'
apart from all the shit that happens nowadays, I think it's a great time to be alive. Technology evolves faster and faster every decade. There are even more advanced prothetics out there yet though.
I’ve wearing a microprocessor control s foot for about 4 years and can definitely say that it is much easier to accept a leg made of carbon than a prosthetics wrapped in artificial skin!
I'm not an amputee, but I too also believe that a bionic that looks very clearly robotic/mechanical look way better than a prosthetic that tries to look "real." Helps avoid that creepy Uncanny Valley feel with artificial skin.
"In 5 to 10 years we won't have robotic hands we'll just make new organic ones" "The question isn't whether we could, it's whether we SHOULD make something better than a human hand" Man, that guy really sucks
I agree with him. Imagine that someone gets an arm that has human strength x3. Now imagine that he/she accidentally (or not) could crush a person or animal you love to death because of that arm. So, should people really have that power in their hands (literally)?
Yes The answer to this is obviously both teaching people to use the stuff you give them so they don't do shit like that accidentally(seriously what world do you live in where this wouldn't happen) as well as a sweet ass arms race(pun not intended) to build us all better bodies that won't crumble in a stiff breeze
You're obviously naive for thinking you could just try to teach people a certain behavior. Did you know about every 25th person has psychopathic tendencies? I would never give super powers to such a person... Also, many people can start out good but end up bad. Learning by teaching doesn't actually get as successful as we would like. Totally agree with that race though, lol.
I'm waiting 10-20 years or atleast once prosthetics become 10+ times better than their fleshy counterparts. I Will definitely replace my body with parts infinitely better without a second whim.
Well, basically they are brain controlled. The sEMG signals used to trig the movements are generated by the muscles contractions, which are caused by motor neurons coming from the brain.
Aging Reversed Do you have an example? For me, the fact that the signal is measured directly on the motor cortex doesn't make a fundamental difference in the information you could extract from it. Both technologies have pros and cons.
That bionic hand is a thing of beauty. It really is. I like the extra detail of putting the appearance of fingernails where they would be on an organic hand. Not all bionic hands have that detail so when i see it done, I appreciate that extra something the designers put in. She could even put press-on nails on her bionic hand if she wanted to match the press-on nails on her organic hand. ✋🤚🏻
Tbh I don't mind walking around with half robot people around me or robots around i feel it is necessary for it to happen. But I'm bit a scared about the idea that we are going to have human looking robots walking around. I agree with the girl at beginning it's much better if it's upfront and I know you have a robot arm or I know you're a robot.
My concern is if there are tiers of prosthetics, where the best are reserved for the wealthy, or if only the wealthy can afford to transform themselves in this way. It would make them even more overpowered compared to the average populace.
Zamboro that's very scary to think about never actually thought of that haha. I don't know why the Rich always exploit whenever they can. Let me re phrase that people always seem to exploit whenever they can.
+Zamboro Unless we come to a point where people actively remove limbs to replace them with superior bionics that won't happen. 1) As technology advances prices will go down. This arm is around € 9.000 (according to a site I found, didn't do extensive research), which is not THAT much. Earlier models cost 100k+, yeah with those prices its only for the rich. Now its the price of a nice second hand car. 2) Don't see how it makes them OP compared to the average joe, unless you've got pictures of armies of terminators or Jaegers walking the streets on your mind. The power of the wealthy isn't through force or anything physical like that. So I fail to see the inmense edge it would offer them. Only as a prestige object maybe, like how nowadays they drive Ferrari's and you a Peugot or something. If you think about it, it doesn't do much other than shout "look this was expensive". Sticking to the speed limit, you get there just as fast. 3) Adding to 2, unless people actively replace limbs with cybernetic gadgets most people still have 2 arms and 2 legs. No distinct advantage is to be gained by being able to afford a bionic hand that perfectly resembles a human hand if you've got both hands. +Alika Kobiashvili In the Western world we're pretty much at the minimum amount of exploitation by the rich in history. No more peasants butchered by feudal lords, no megafactory owners working their people to death, no slaves and so on. There's unions, PR, socialist laws etc. There will always be the privileged few but the gap is hugely eroded
Yer. the other ones that are on this channel that are what they call the "mind controlled" ones are way better... they are also WAY more expensive and and not yet general available like this is. But they are better. and move more naturally and smoother. plus you don't get the need to twist the hand or thumb with your other hand. But I don't understand why this technology scares people. Tech enhancements like this and improvements in this field should be commented. not subject to modern day witch hunting.
In my opinion; bionic arms aint shit until you can do delicate procedures with individual fingers, like using a video game controller, or fiddle a pen or whatever idk
"Well we could make it like a swiss army knife, and put all sorts of extra gadgets in the fingers. But should we make a hand like that? Should we make a hand better than a human hand?" Long and short answer: Yes you friggin should.
We should also look at the ethics of such prosthetics! Just think about it! What if someone with a prosthetic gave someone the bird? Could they blame the company that made it? These are some deep questions!
Jack Kraken Once they have these to where they're basically metal and wire replacing flesh and bone, the asshole with the bionic hand is an asshole either way.
in school we had a lecture from someone who used to work there and he brought this version in with him. He also had a different myelectric one that was set up for demonstration (space for your hand to go) that we got to try out. It was strange to see it move when moving your hand like she did in the video, like kinda eerie lol. Also, the reason these are so uncommon is because of the cost, ~$500,000
We don't care about pre-K kids messing up in terms of gross skills and fine skills. My friends and family anxious to be about my damage brain and my right side body. I said to them, relax. I am a childlike curiously pre-K kid. I love working on my muscles and my AlonTree equipment.
A couple of issues which will no doubt be solved eventually: It would be better if it were controlled by the brain. A connection to the motor neurons maybe? Real hands can move a lot quicker than the ones shown. It should be able to react the way a real arm would. Hopefully someday this will be achieved with an advanced embedded operating system.
