Boeing 306-C Flying Wing - First Flights

This film features the build and first trim session of the 44" free-flight rubber-powered Boeing 306-C, a twin-pusher flying wing that was an unbuilt, concept design aircraft by Boeing in 1935. The model was inspired by the paintings of Jared Zichek, and the 21" rubber-powered plan of the Boeing 306-B by Pres Burning.
I was given a 36" rubber-powered model of the single engine version, the 306-B, from the estate of the late Dallas Cornelius. I had intended to fly his beautiful model this summer, to give her some air again, but instead, I became inspired to build my own, opting for a larger twin-pusher version, the 306-C.
Inspiration also came from the Lippisch P-13, rubber-powered design by the late, great Don Srull, whose rib designs were employed for this project.
I wanted to keep this model as clean as possible, so I decided to keep the rubber motor contained within the wing via a sheeted rib box. With only an inch of clearance at the high point of the airfoil, I grew concerned for the ability of the motor to fully unwind without bunching, which could then easily alter the flight path. I needed consistency for these twin motors, so it was decided to go a bit shorter with the rubber, than originally intended. Still, the motor is 3X the hook to peg distance. I also used a 1/2" piece of surgical tubing at the prop hook to act as a spacer, which helped to prevent the rubber from climbing the prop shaft.
The model performed well on its first time out, so I'm excited to see her potential as I reach max winds of 1200 turns. Happy man!!
Filmed with a Canon PowerShot SX20, and an iPhone 11Pro & 14Pro on 5.18.23 in Wawayanda, NY. Music by Ben Linwood & Noam Zaguri via ArtList.

good work. there's a few defects in the design, tho. :31 reflexed profile.? NOT needed, as this is NOT a true flying wing. the reflex Makes avoidable extra drag, all the time.! the wing profile leading edge should be Sufficiently rounded; like a clark-y, for example. additionally, it should be understood that a scale-accurate wing profile should NOT be used, when designing a scale model. compare the clark-y or n-10 profiles. 1:03 there is extra drag at the poorly shaped upper and lower, forward and aft, ends of the engine nacelles. you may know that, technically, the central main spar of a swept main wing should be located at Thirty percent of the MAC. it is probable that, in the case of a tiny model, the parts of the vert-stabs that extend below the plane of main wing are not needed. if true, the stabs could be made lighter, and drag (at the wingtips) could be reduced. d

As always, your beautifully built models are an inspiration. I know that every time I open your latest video, I will not be disappointed. You are a true craftsman. The passion and dedication you display and your skill (photography) capturing the moment... There should be an award. As I approach retirement age I am rekindling my love of free flight models. I used to build Peanut and Walnut scale as well as many duration birds. Techniques and materials have changes slightly, and for the better. The old Nitrate/Butyrate Dope days come to mind. I have enjoyed your "Free Flight Basics" immensely. If I may be so bold. I was curious if you might sell a set of drawings? I know that scratch building involves a lot of improvisation and any drawings are mostly guide lines and such. I am inspired to attempt a challenging design (Twin, Pusher, Wing) and the 306 C looks perfect. Very Respectfully, Wolf D.

What a marvelous job. Your attention to detail and patience in test flying is to be commended. As a lifelong lover of aircraft ( especially those that were a bit unusual in design) they have always fascinated me. The job you did on this build and presentation is great. No photos left but about 60 years ago I built a large balsa Dornier 217 J2 from scratch using old prints. At first I wanted to do a RC version but back then RC gear was spendy and it never got past the control line level. But it was impressive and with a wingspan of over 5' its' excellent detailing always drew a crowd. Your work on this old Boeing design makes me want to look for some drawings for Howard Hughes X11 that he built at the end of WWII for the army, Another twin boom twin engine monster in its time. Keep up the nice work. Old Bob
