From Wikipedia:The damage was such that the aircraft was a write-off, but to preserve its reputation Qantas had it repaired at a cost of $100 million.[3][4] By returning the aircraft to service, Qantas was able to retain its record of having no hull-loss accidents since the advent of the Jet Age.

Nah, they are usually at the top of the tree regarding training and safety. Vs> QF 32. However, this was a balls up well and truly. I wonder what the "punishment" was for the crew, especially captain. And interestingly, you can tell by his earlier admonishments that he doesn't have faith in the FO, and is haranguing him. Last thing you need when the pressure is on. Capn was on a bit of ego trip here, and backfired royally.

it's still a severely damaged plane. Quantas really took a risk flying it. They risked the pilots & passengers lives to keep a shining record. Wrong move/high risk. I would never have flown on that plane . Now Quantas is known for keeping an unsafe plane in the air. That speaks volumes.
@bradster1708
@bradster1708 5 лет назад
anna Last, have no fear as for the safety of passengers and crew flying this plane. The engineers working for QANTAS are some of the best in the world, QANTAS just hate to pay them their large salaries. Repairing this aircraft when it should have a write off was only a question of money. The repair itself would have been done to the highest standards as required by the industry, there would have been no shortcuts taken. You may not be aware of this but if a maintenance engineer signs off on a bad repair or deliberately covers up a dodgy repair they can be charged with a criminal offence as well as be fired and never work in the industry again. You don’t need to have faith in QANTAS management but at least have faith in their Licenced Aviation Maintenance Engineers.

ALSO that Boeing 747 accident, in which a part of the plane exploded at 29,000 feet, which in turn caused 4 or 5 passenger's oxygen masks not to deploy, as the oxygen tanks also exploded. It was also a Qantas flight.

@@mustafa7248 it wasn't an accident, it was an incident where an oxygen bottle ruptured for no apparent reason... ALL Qantas oxygen bottles were tested and found to be properly maintained with proper and detailed records, including the bottle that ruptured. It was unable to be recovered. It was concluded that it was NOT Qantas' fault in any way whatsoever and that was most likely a manufacturing fault that was undetected - Note, no airline can break open the bottle and find any faults so they have to take quality control and documentation as correct. The bottle damaged the fuselage causing a decompression. At NO TIME was the aeroplane in danger and it was certainly NOT an accident. Neither was the BKK incident. Qantas was not criticized for training, it was noted that a new procedure, although it had been risk assessed did not consider all factors that could happen in a worst case scenario. This incident has been overdramatized to buggery... yes, it was serious but runway overruns happen at the rate of about 1 or 2 a week around the world. Qantas is a very safe and very well managed airline from a safety perspective. This was it's only 2nd overrun in 79 years of operations. Lots of people like to try and cut Qantas down because it has such a good record. Long may it continue to have.

Qantas has had 8 fatal accidents since it started flying. But none since the start of the jet age - about 1970. If you believe that Qantas has never had a fatal accident you are in effect saying "no fatal accidents, at least not since the last one". It just doesn't make sense. It is a very safe airline. But there are many airlines who have flown many more hours than Qantas who have never had a fatal accident. Accuracy and truth are more important than myth.
@johncunningham6598
@johncunningham6598 6 лет назад
Ken, I've just re-checked my sources. You are partly right. Overall 104 people have died in 14 Qantas fatal accidents since the first in 1927. Two of these crashes were caused by enemy action in WW2. Qantas is a safe airline and does not need myth or fairy stories to make that point. But plainly the numbers tell the story and it cannot cannot claim to be the safest. Since the start of the jet age many airlines flying many more hours than Qantas are accident and fatality free. My best wishes.

Visibility was also terrible, I didn't see the runway until just 10 seconds to touchdown, we also bounced on the runway. That day also rained in the Sahara.

In my wildest dreams, I cannot imagine a 747 crew beginning a late go-around, then attempting to stop after TOGA throttles. If there isn't initially enough runway to stop, there sure as hell isn't enough runway to stop after the acceleration of an aborted go-around. Changing one's mind twice on the same approach is an almost guaranteed disaster. A series of abysmal mistakes--they were lucky to have survived.

Actually, QF wanted desperately to protect their safety reputation so at great expense, they DIDN'T allow for Airframe Right-Off! (although so advised by a multitude of experts.) They rebuilt at enormous cost. To save their reputation. A brand new Boeing 747 would have been cheaper (all things considered), but after was said and all was done, QF decided it was better for the long term bottom line to stick with this rebuilt air-frame thus saving the embarrassment of losing one. Yes. No-one died, and their reputation hung on this. However, they're industry reputation suffered.
@andrewjonessydney
@andrewjonessydney 2 года назад
I worked at QF on this incident. You are 100% wrong. Insurers made the decision that the aircraft was repairable. That is never the decision of the owner. Aircraft was repaired perfectly and paid for by the insurance companies and certified airworthy by regulators and QF. Flew for many years after this. Sorry but you don’t know what you are talking about.

The FO's suggestion to go-around during the approach was dismissed and the Captain aborted the go-around near the end of the runway. @@andrew_koala2974 "whatever happens is meant to happen. It is FATE ... accept it ... Be it good or bad. " I work in the emergency medical field. We say "fuck off" to your 'fate' every single day. If we all believed that "whatever happens is meant to happen" there would be no medical services, no rescue services, no police, no aviation safety regulation or investigations, no pilot regulation or safety requirements - because hey, people should just accept fate. Anything that happens was mean to happen, right? Woman with cancer? No point treating her, nature and/or God wanted her to have that cancer. Child born with congenital heart defect? We could repair it with surgery, but we won't because clearly she was meant to have that defect. Teenage girl hit by a drunk driver? No paramedics, ambulance, emergency department, or surgery for her massive internal injuries. She'll survive if she's meant to - let fate take care of her. Child drowns? Clearly a higher purpose! Imagine what disaster could've happened if the three year old hadn't fallen into the backyard pool. Death is a reality, part of the cycle of life, and we accept it when it happens. We can't save everyone. But we try our darnedest to stop death and cure illness, and when it does happen we do everything we can to stop it happening again. There is no fate, except that we make ourselves. There is no higher purpose, there are only positive and negative coincidences. That's reality. Having said all that, I fully accept your right to believe what you want. But do us a favour and make sure you've made your beliefs clear by signing a "Do Not Resuscitate" order. If you suffer a sudden cardiac arrest one day, long before you would have had a natural death, I'd hate to violate your deeply held belief by resuscitating you, instead of accepting that it was simply your time to die.

@Musikur
@Musikur 3 года назад
It's not that they don't know how to do a go-around. Qantas pilots are well trained and do a lot more hand flying practice than a lot of other airlines. This was just a series of small lapses of judgement which lead up to the accident. None of the mistakes in themselves were all that dangerous, it was all together that made it an accident. Yes, in hindsight, they probably should have called for a go around when the captain first noticed they were high, but on its own that wouldn't have caused a problem.

What a shame to put the guilt on wet runway :D Both pilots made so many mistakes they should go into jail for public safety threat (negligence). Long landing (no go arround) = 1st fail not giving it TO/GA = 2nd fail pulling back 3 throttles out of 4 = 3rd fail.
@MegaSunspark
@MegaSunspark 6 лет назад
Agree with you 100%. It was a comedy of errors, one error after another by these pilots, especially the captain. Landing in heavy rain is a bad idea and then after you declare a go-around you don't change your mind because the landing gears have touched the runway, you still take off and go around. When retarding the throttles, who retards three engines and leave one throttle to full power? Total confusion and lack self and situational awareness. I'm surprised that the aircraft didn't veer off to one side and went of the side of the runway. On a heavy rain soaked runway, it is safer to TOGA then to force a landing where you have no traction or braking due to hydroplaning. These pilots should have been suspended if not fired. Maybe the captain should have been fired and the copilot sent for retraining.

I remember that incident. I flew on QF1 numerous times back in the day and really liked the convenience of the service. BA9 also flew the same route. Both flights are now scrapped and Qantas operates the A330 Scarebus to BKK which leaves in the morning. I just got sick of delay after delay on it and gave up. I now fly Emirates because the A380 economy is almost as good as QF Business! Thanks for this video.

Wow...outstanding, immersive video. I found myself cringing, and shouting out loud at the pilot, and co-pilot, “no, no, you are going to over run!” Excellent video, keep up the good work! P.S...the clickbait of “sparks” shooting out from wet grass was unnecessary, and even detracted from the absurdity of the actual incident: a 747 stuck in a field, like a pig, wallowing in a mud puddle!

Qantas is one lucky airline to have 3 incidents ever since it was known as 'Qantas itself' and still yet managed to conquer the worlds safest airline 8 years in a row from 2014 to 2021, and then in 2023. What an 'easy' achievement for them 👏😅

It ran off the runway amongst the golf course at the airport there, and for a while if you hit your approach shot over the green near where the plane ended up, it was referred to as an "Australian approach."

It was at that time the most expensive repair operation but saved QF the registration of a hull loss and thus their safety record remained untarnished . It was QF policy not the deploy thrust reversers , maybe this also played a part in the outcome . Ironically the most expensive salvage op was on another QF aircraft , the A380 at SIN which cost 100.000.000$ .
@bradster1708

Richard Shiggins, you are partly right. QANTAS changed policy from full reverse thrust to idle reverse thrust only.
