Thanks for a great background on a bomber I've often wondered about. I'm retired USAF & I was stationed in Blytheville Ark. from '77-'81 as a SAC member. We had B52s & tankers but I never saw any of these up close. I often wondered what this bomber was about & now I know quite a bit more. Thanks again.

For many years the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds had a B-47, and B-52, on static display. I loved stepping out of the exhibit building next to it and looking up at it. At some point, it was removed and scrapped during Renovations at the fairgrounds. Too bad.

A Docent who worked on Wednesday's named Paul ??? was "Mr Bomber". He had flown the B-29, B-36, B-47 and the B-52. Of all those aircraft He liked the B-47 best. He had great stories about flying all of those aircraft. I miss Him!

The cool thing about Jimmy was that he was the real deal-WW2 and SAC bomber pilot. General James Stuart.

March Air Museum in Riverside has a cutaway B-47 cockpit. It has to be one of the most unique cockpits of any bomber, like a fighter cockpit on a bomber. The co-pilot sits behind the pilot in the front seat, with a yoke, and the seat can swivel backwards so he can fire the cannon in the tail.

Years ago I worked with a former AF mechanic who worked on B-47's. He said the bomb bay doors on the 47 were made to open and close very rapidly, less than a couple of seconds each way. Besides keeping the amount of time of the turbulence low when they were open, it prevented the enemy's ground observers from seeing the bomb bad doors were open and knowing the target to be bombed was nearby. The doors opened a couple of seconds before the bombs dropped and snapped closed a couple of seconds after the last bomb fell. He told me of a hanger accident where a mechanic was on a step ladder working on something in the bomb bay when someone pressurized the hydraulics and the bomb bay doors began closing on him. His only hope would have been to jump from the ladder and maybe fall fast enough to clear the rapidly closing bomb bay doors. But instead he attempted to climb the ladder up into the bomb bay to avoid being caught in the pinch point between the doors. He didn't make it and died from the internal injuries that were inflicted. So I say thank you to not only the flight crews who risked and sometimes gave their lives to protect our nation, but also to the ground crews who performed the often grueling and dangerous work of keeping those birds operational. Great video, thanks for sharing!

There are no B-47's flying anywhere in the world.

The B-52 always reminded me of the big offspring of the B-47. From an external view and battle missions there are a lot of similarities.

Used to watch the B47’s landing with drag chutes deployed at Andersen AFB Guam in the mid 50’s. My Dad was in the Air Force, and we lived off base in Harmon Village. Heard lots of sonic booms when the jet pilots liked to break the sound barrier.

Ah . . . aeroelastic divergence/flexing. A major source of wing failure.
