This is the perfect Patrol-Landcruiser video. Patrol overheats in the snow and the landcruiser's handbrake lets go on a lil hill, alongwith electrical complications. Gotta love the old rigs. But you'll always remember the time you broke down in the snow, not the time you didn't. Old (semi-reliable) 4wd's create more memories IMO. Solid vid lads.

Being from cold country, I'm over snow driving, snow drifts, frozen roads, delays etc. contending with public whom have no idea, attempting to drive as per normal at speed, heater on and wonder why it all goes pear shape when they hit ice and loose traction, colliding with guard rails, other traffic or the preferable outcome, just running off the road, no contact or injury. For that reason I head to Qld for the winter months, and will be on K'gari (Fraser Is) enjoying the sun, Eli Creek, Lake McKenzie and sand driving real soon, on route now. Leave the snow to you young fellas, enjoy the cold, brrr. Love it, keep up the good work mate.

You need a good set of chains on the front wheels....and probably the rear wheels too. The Canadians make great V bar ladder chains. When the snow falls around here everyone goes up in to the Brindabella's and skid into each other & off the road, it's mayhem.

The problem with fresh snow is that once you go through it, it compresses into ice and gets slipperier. That's why you need chains - to cut through the ice to the ground below.

100% agree. Chains are awesome in clay conditions as well. I've never seen them being used in Aussie though, not sure why. I'm normally in NZ and I use chains often for clay/hard pack. You just idle up stuff, no wheel spin or ripping up the track

@@BobJones20001 I was in South Africa and there was snow on the road (not even much - say a few cms). Car that drove there previously had packed it down into an ice layer ice and even the best 4x4s with large mud tyres were sliding off the side of the road, making it impassable - also there was a cliff to the side of the road, making it damn dangerous. But cars with chains (even two wheel drives) had no problems at all. If you go to snow, you have to have chains.

Goes to show you learn something new everyday. In my 1996 4.5L petrol 80 Series Landcruiser with the factory dual tanks (90L+55L), the engine doesn't have direct access to the sub-tank. I need to manually hit a switch to transfer fuel from the sub-tank into the main tank. Based on what you said here, it seems the diesel have access to both tanks at the same time. Or did I incorrectly interpreted that? Brilliant episode gents.
@OzTrax4X4
@OzTrax4X4 2 года назад
Petrol and diesel use a switching solenoid to change the path of flow from either the main or sub tank. If yours is pumping fuel from the sub to the main, then I'd say you have a solenoid issue and should look at replacing it as that's not how the fuel system is supposed to operate. The sub-tank button should only use fuel from the sub tank, not fill the main tank. 🤠👍 Edit: Petrol and diesel could operate differently, but that's how the diesel operates.
@HammerRocks
@HammerRocks 2 года назад
@@OzTrax4X4 Models with the 1FZ-FE engines (ie. 4.5L Petrol) & sub-tank, like mine doesn't work like the diesel models. On my LC80, pressing the Sub-Fuel Tank Switch, will pump fuel from the sub-tank into the main tank. It will automatically stop when the transfer is complete (or if manually stopped). The fuel transfer is reflected on the fuel gauges of both tanks (ie. sub-tank fuel gauge needle decreases, as the main tank needle increases). This process is also covered in the owner's manual (page 134).
@OzTrax4X4
@OzTrax4X4 2 года назад
@@HammerRocksinteresting. I have the FSM here which is for FZJ/HZJ/HDJ models and it shows that the two solenoids change the flow from the tanks and they don't flow into each other when the sub tank is switched on, it just changes the path of the main and return solenoids to the tank you're using. Happy to flick you the pic I took today if you contact me over on Insta or Facebook to show that. I'd find that strange that it pumps from one to the other, as if you put a hole in your main tank, you're kinda screwed in that sense. 🤔
@fatmanoverlanding
@fatmanoverlanding 2 года назад
@@HammerRocks This is exactly how my 80 Series main & sub-tank works. The engine only draws fuel from the main tank, and you'll need to turn-on the sub-tank fuel switch to transfer fuel from the sub-tank. I generally transfer fuel when the low fuel warning light comes on from the main tank. When at a stand-still, I can hear the very faint whir of the pump motor when I'm transferring fuel. The owners manual says, the pump transfer fuel at a rate of 1L-2L/min. And it seems only the 1FZ-FE engined 80 Series has this feature.
@HammerRocks
@HammerRocks 2 года назад
@@fatmanoverlanding Mine is closer to 2L/min, as it takes just under 30mins to transfer the entire 55L of the sub-tank into the main tank.

I've chased the issue for ages and have figured it out. - There are 2 solenoids for the engine draw and return lines for the tanks. - The tanks are independent - the solenoids switch between the tanks I had the same issue, it would lose power and get stuck on tanks. I'm in the process of replacing both solenoids, my sub tank has been full for months but haven't been able to access it. Hope this helps!
