First, this is awesome! Second, is this the only video available for this beautiful piece of history? Third, provided you could get the rights, etc, Simply Red's Fairground would be apt. ;) Hard to believe that this would have been a fairground/carnival attraction in its own right a century ago. Show it to kids today and they probably wouldn't fully appreciate it. But then again, they might on here. You Sir, are an excellent custodian of this awesome piece of history.
I'd be the same. But then again, you would have to be extremely resourceful with that organ - not as if you could buy spare parts for it >.< I do admit to being stereotypical in the previous comment. I'm sure if I had a big enough sample size, I would more than likely be surprised at the results. I mean, the fact this video has nearly 4M views means something.
For the ones who are curious!: This is a 81 key Marenghi dance organ. Dance organs were used in the beggining of the XX Century in dance halls, where people would pay for the organ to play a song to dance (they usually were short songs so people would pay more lol). Dance organs are different from fairground organs and band organs, but they are all mechanical organs. Dance organs are usually less loud and way bigger, while fairground organs and band organs (Like the one you see in carousels) are designed to be very loud, so they can mask the sound of the machinery and people voices. Some mechanical organs play with music books (like the one you saw at the beggining of the video), others play with rolls (similar to pianollas) and others have been addapted in modern times to play MIDI from a computer or cellphone! Besides Marenghi, other manufacturers of mechanical organs are: -Gavioli, Wurlitzer, Artizan, Hooghuys, Frati, Debrüder, DECAP, Verbeek and many more ^^
I actually live near an old amusement park with a historic carousel complete with its fully operational Wurlitzer from when the park first opened around the turn of the century
A friend of my parents had a three tiered keyboard Werlitzer in his living room. It was fully working. Hearing Tocatta In Fuge on it rocked. Much like this. Wonderful rendition. Had me singing all the way through.
Apollo Smile to be fair you couldn't download the 1916 midi on the go. And 1916 midi only worked on the organ that you arranged it on, nowadays midi is universal. So yeah, it was kind of broken.

Apollo Smile are you stupid or something? you get offended by an innocent little joke looks like you need more sarcasm, irony and happiness in your life, bud
I suspect Freddie Mercury would be beside himself hearing this on such a beautiful instrument! It's almost an instrumental version of himself in a bit of drag!!! Love this! Bravo!!!
The painted figure on the lower front panel (sitting on the grass, facing left) actually looks a bit like Freddie. edit: from a distance Amazing programming. What a treat to listen to. What a marvel of a machine.
In this day and age, you can modify the electronics of the old machines to support MIDI. It's just like adding MIDI capability to an acoustic piano instead of making it a "player piano" with the roll feeder.
A little bit of interesting word history: "ye" is actually a way of spelling "the" because the "y" is supposed to be Thorn (Þ, þ) from the Futhark runic alphabet. However, most printing presses didn't have the Thorn letter, so they used the Y letter instead.
@@pagansunite4005 which makes me wonder why they didn't have the right letter - it should have been fairly easy to cast it as addition to any existing typeface, shouldn't it? After all, they were using movable type back then.
Dear Fred, We miss you. we hope that you would've liked what we've done for you. We wish you were still here. You'll always be a legend. You didn't deserve to go so soon. Kaia x
This is extraordinary. A beautiful, magnificent instrument & work of art on its own, but...if we could see Freddie Mercury's face while he watched, & heard his music like this! If the rest of them haven't seen this, what a crime.
Wow! It is truly amazing! An special antique perform a timeless great song. It is really a different and interesting way to listen this beautiful rock song.
Yep that's exactly the type of organ they used in the recordings for that game. I actually have copies of most of the songs used in RCT in real life on that organ.
Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide No escape from reality Open your eyes Look up to the skies and see I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy Because I'm easy come, easy go A little high, little low Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me Mama, just killed a man Put a gun against his head Pulled my trigger, now he's dead Mama, life had just begun But now I've gone and thrown it all away Mama, ooo Didn't mean to make you cry If I'm not back again this time tomorrow Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters Too late, my time has come Sends shivers down my spine Body's aching all the time Goodbye everybody I've got to go Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth Mama, ooo (anyway the wind blows) I don't want to die I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all I see a little silhouetto of a man Scaramouch, scaramouch will you do the fandango Thunderbolt and lightning very very frightening me Gallileo, Gallileo, Gallileo, Gallileo, Gallileo Figaro - magnifico But I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me He's just a poor boy from a poor family Spare him his life from this monstrosity Easy come easy go will you let me go Bismillah! No we will not let you go - let him go Bismillah! We will not let you go - let him go Bismillah! We will not let you go let me go Will not let you go let me go (never) Never let you go let me go Never let me go ooo No, no, no, no, no, no, no Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me For me For me So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye So you think you can love me and leave me to die Oh baby, can't do this to me baby Just gotta get out just gotta get right outta here Ooh yeah, ooh yeah Nothing really matters Anyone can see Nothing really matters nothing really matters to me Anyway the wind blows
Love the song but the whole way through, I'm thinking of the engineering, craftsman who built it and how the programmer got the code on the paper! A work of art. [edit] No, a symphony of art.
The fact that someone took the time to actually produce the music in the format the organ can read is pretty astonishing and praiseworthy. That was fantastic!
this device was 70 years old when bohemian rhapsody was released, and we're watching this 45 years after that. purely in terms of timeline, this like someone in 2060 playing despacito on one of the first synthesizers of the 1950's...
No it will be like someone playing Bohemian Rhapsody in 2060 lol. Despacito is dead now, it won't have remotely the same impact as Bohemian Rhapsody, isn't nearly as good, and it's a shame on youtube it has a few billion more views even though I'm pretty sure it's not as well known (then again, there's several different videos of Bohemian Rhapsody).
Chris Hamilton they weren’t likening despacito to bohemian rhapsody’s excellence. They were purely referencing the timeline, so they used a popular song that was created around this time. Obviously despacito isn’t as absolutely amazing as bohemian rhapsody
What’s even cooler is when you realize this organ is basically a 100+ year old analogue binary computer. You put a file in and it runs a program based upon which places have a hole (1) or no hole (0).
Jesus Adfasd: This organ is a textbook example of a deterministic Turing machine. A DTM reads a symbol off of a program tape and writes a corresponding symbol based upon what it has read. In a DTM, each read symbol X will have a single write symbol output Y. Similarly, this organ reads unique notes off of a program written onto a long sheet of paper as either a hole (1) or no hole (0). Based upon the finite number of unique combinations of 1 and 0, the organ is theoretically capable of being scaled to produce an equally finite number of unique output signals as musical notes. Each unique combination of 1 and 0 “read” from the sheet can be “written” as a unique musical note or chord. Given input signal X, the organ will always output note Y and, barring mechanical failure of the organ or the music sheet, will never output random notes for a given, established read symbol. Now, what this machine is not that a modern electronic computer is, is a universal Turing machine. A UTM can simulate any other given Turing machine, be they DTM or NTM, and thus theoretically solve any mathematical problem. This organ, even with its binary language, could be made into a UTM. It would need 15 different modes however, rather than this organ’s single mode. In fact, there are real world examples of them right here on RU-vid. Just search “mechanical Turing machine”.
Them: it surely has to be over, I mean this guitar solo is a great way to end it. Me: nope...wait...here it comes... GALLILEOOOO! Them: I think queen fans are a different breed Me: ROGERS FALSETTO IS GREAT...WAIT LET ME SHOW YOU IT IN LAP OF THE GODS ITS LIKE HARMONIZED GIRL SCREAMS
The composer portraits along the top are: Wagner, Liszt, Mozart, Beethoven, Peter Benoit, and Jan Blockx. The last two were important Flemish composers of the late 19th cent. Their inclusion is curious, however, not because of their relative obscurity, but because the organ is of Parisian origin.
At A Funeral Would Be A Stupid, At A Wedding Is The Only Good Idea I've Seen On A Comment On A Video Even Slightly About Frederick Mercury. Their Music Was About Bringing People Together, like any other band.
The most mindblowing thing I see is how the 100-year old note reader seems to have no problems with all those paper folds. While my printer gets stuck on the smallest paper fold; and loves creating more paper folds on its own from time to time.
While the reply is funny, I believe the usual problem is papers sticking together; since all the paper here is attached, very easy to separate. And yes, paper jams have no right to happen; it should be an easy solution.
This instrument was clearly maintained in a very good condition and fixed whenever something broke down and also the cost of this instrument and your printer can't even be compared. The printer was made from cheap materials and is in general cheap unlike this instrument
Modern printers are actually designed to fail or seem crummy or outdated. Its because the technology has been perfected enough it can't be improved much further, and one printer can last decades. Because of this printer companies need to keep afloat some how so most stop making cartridges or intentionally design the printer to die when the warranty expires. Oddly this has led people to buy printers from the 80s, 90s, 2000s.
This is so cool!!!!!!!! I cant believe my ears. Its particularly interesting how the music notes on the paper looks so similar to modern day music note in MIDI for most DAWs. Some things never change
Theoretically you could use a MIDI like that to quickly design the sheet music for one of these by transposing the different tracks to the relevant horizontal spaces on the sheets for the corresponding instruments.
Only problem with that would be knowing the correct instrument switches which are on the left hand side of the card. You will need to activate and deactivate them in a correct order to hear what you hear now.
CB2C It might be an auditory illusion? I’m not sure if the link will work but hearing the lyrics made me think of this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZY6h3pKqYI0.html
Af first I thought you guys were saying that you would just get a KFC bucket and start singing/dancing, because that is also acceptable. Then I realized that you both were responding to "Just a KFC Bucket" and not actually suggesting getting KFC and partaking in the festivities....damn I could really go for some KFC.
This literally gives me goosebumps listening to this, it’s awesome. So many talents coming together, from Queen composing the song, the makers of the organ itself and whoever converted Bohemian Rhapsody into a readable format for it. Just. WOW
No doubt in my mind at all that if Freddie had encountered this, he would've cried...and then without missing a beat, he would've gone 'in character' and sang right along with it...
Lmao you have no idea what Freddie Mercury would have done, you act like you knew the guy. Well most likely you didnt, you have no idea how he would have reacted to this.
@@ricardoloera-contreras1289 he had lots of sex with men and women, on the bright side he said he'd rather go to hell. 😀 im pretty sure im going to hell too haha lmao
Smoosh Goo There's a difference between someone like Freddie, and someone like X. You can clearly see a difference in both characters and Freddie is the one going up.
