England boss Gareth Southgate is expected to switch to a back three for the first time in three years in Saturday's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland, with Kieran Trippier in line to start at right wing-back and Bukayo Saka at left wing-back.
Sky Sports News has reported in the last few days that Southgate has been working on a new game plan in training this week to try to kick-start England's performance levels.
The England manager has tried a host of different players in different roles at their Blankenhain base in recent days, but it now looks like he has settled on Trippier and Saka to give his team some much-needed width.

Respect to Southgate - he has responded to the incessant demand to change - and he has picked a solution that will allow England to play all over the pitch not compressed on their own half on the right side! If it works we start to see our 3 musketeers come to the fore - Kane Bellingham and Foden. And in reserve we have subs to reinforce on the 60 min mark. I say a bit late - but well done Southgate

@@3chords490 one suspension won’t be why at all, plenty of players can come in and do guehi role. It’s because it’s clearly not working. I’m not a Southgate fan but least he’s trying something different

@@paulwatch5990 I can guarantee you that Saka will not be sitting back. That’s why you play a back 3 and two holding midfielders ( Rice and Mainoo), so the two wing backs can push forward and stretch the wings and supply passes. I just hope he benches Trippier and plays TAA at the right wing but for some reason he’s obsessed with Trippier ( who also has a knock).

These comments almost make it sound acceptable for England to Loose this game… Switzerland didn’t win the last 4 games of their qualifying campaign at the end of last year, they drew against teams such as; Belarus Israel Kosovo Then lost against Romania… They have drawn 4 of their 8 games this year… scraped past Ireland 1-0 If England don’t win this game it is down to England playing poorly 😤 Switzerland will be found out by a decent team , let’s hope it’s England

They are vulnerable to heavy defeats, 6-1 against Portugal in a World Cup is shocking, with a very similar team 😤 Italy have been poor for a long time and seem to get worse, nothing impressive about beating Italy, it was expected

@@allfornothing4116they only lost one game over the last two euros in regular time. They won or drew against Spain, Italy, Germany and France. This euro they play better against better opponents than england. England lost against iceland, drew against slovakia, slovenia and denmark. Switzerland scored almost double the amount of goals this euro. Given the huge difference in squad strength, England plays way worse.

Let’s be honest - it’ll be a back-5 and not a back-3 (in fear of the opponent’s set-up) It’s not a risk or more adventurous, it’ll be more cautious. Best of luck to the lads though - it’s coming home!

Formation change isn’t a big deal. These players just aren’t world class plus the pass and move style they’re trying to play isn’t in their DNA. Historically it’s always been long ball to the striker with supporting runners off the ball.

England has no movement. If they just play with movement then they will be good. And for the life of me why don't they play Gomez at LB. He's done the job there for Liverpool. No need to change the formation. But we all know that England will play the ball side to side, and Kane will drop deep even if they deploy a "new" formation. And that's down to the manager's play style.
