One can't leave P Susheela - the one & only True Nightingale - miles ahead with a crystal clear, sweetest Timbre of voice in this universe whose voice Never Ever emitted Shrillness or kreetching sound even while travelling on the Upper most octave. Too many mind boggling songs have been rendered by her under the music scores of Legendary Composers K V Mahadevan and M S Viswanathan. Unfortunately, as she too was from South India, couldn't get prominence in the All India level. However, she was the First Recipient of the National award for Best Female Playback Voice for her Song NaaLai indha VeLai Paarthu for the Sivaji starrer film Uyarndha Manidhan (1968) and she was felicitated by Lata Mangeshkar for this fete and Lata herself reportedly told Susheela Madam that she was stunned by Susheela's Singing that song at an awesome pitch and further said that even she couldn't sing at that awesome range.

I fully agree with you. One song, very good no doubt, could not have troubled Lataji by any stretch of imagination. Many singers came and went but Lataji's sheer inborn talent, a god's gift, was far superior to any of those. And as far as classical songs are concerned more than 80- 90 percent have been dung by Lataji. So, I don't believe, as you rightly said, that Vani Jairam gave her sleepless nights. I have listened to hundreds of the classical based songs by Lataji and I challenge any singer to sing with all the nuances, murkis, palaks etc. Even singing one line is difficult. But, common man does not understand all these points. I am glad that you share the same opinion which I have.

Bol re papihara won the award for classical based song in raga Mian Ki Malhar in Guddi (Mian = Mian Tansen) and Lata Mangeshkar lost for Baiyan na dharo in Charukesi raga for film Dastak. Never happened before, always Lata got that award, until Vani made her runner-up! Not only that, Bol re papihara was top # 1 song for 16 weeks on Ameen Sayani radio program Binaca Geet Mala. 1st song, and it was a big music storm of success and what a blow it was to Bollywood establishment, and they stopped Vani Jairam and did not give many opportunities to her. But still many other Vani Jairam songs were also hit songs on Binaca Geet Mala -- Pyar kabhi kam, Zindagi mein aap aaye, Humko man ki shakti dena, Maine tumhe paa liya hai, le chalo le chalo, Zulf lehrai toh, Mere toh giridhar gopal, Mitwa morey man mitwa, Pyar bhara kajra, Teri jheel si gehri aankon mein. Also in Pakeezah Vani Jairam sang two pure amazing thumris -- Mora saajan and Maut bhi furquat mein. So Lata had nothing to fear? Lata even feared her own sister's success. LOL.

Nobody denies lata's genius and vani is no match. But fact is lata was human and so had she fears and insecurities despite her talents

@@STM2811 No, its because the Hindi singers are unable to pronounce tge southern languages. Lata sang @ least 1 Tamil number : Endhan Kannalan Karai Nokki Pogiraan. It is replete with pronunciation howlers.

@@STM2811 No, South Indians, Maharashtrians,Tamils & a Malayali like Jesudoss - none of them native speakers of Hindi - are far better in pronouncing Hindi - they may not match the native Hindi speakers but are nowhere near as atrovious in pronunciation as the Hindi speakers singing southern languages. An example is Lata - Hindi not her mother tongue but could carry it off admirably. Many Tamil, Marathi etc singers of Hindustani classical - excellent pronunciation. Cannot think of even 1 Northerner even attempting Carnatic, let alone prounce well in non Hindi lingos!! It is just that much harder to pronounce southern languages than Hindi - a point you overlook. Your rejoinder is far from convincin & just tit for tat.
