This is a fantastic set of Pau Ferro sent to us by our friends at Stewmac. Although not a true Dalbergia its pretty well as close as you can get and certainly a wonderful alternative.

What I have noticed more and more that North, Central & South Americans have certain names by regions, countries. Example what others call in ENGLISH Bolivian Rosewood, Pau Ferro in Mexico, where our ranch is, we call Machaerium scleroxylon wood, "Morado."

Yeah it is lovely - looking good! Tap-tone sounds really nice too - has a nice ring to it and some nice vibrancy. Today was a lovely day here [outside Derry in Northern Ireland] too... headed off up the north west coast to a 5 mile stretch of beach called Benone. Awesome!! Overlooking Donegal, my second homeland, beautiful golden sands and as you walk along the beach you’re simply overwhelmed with inspiration and emotion. For me, this is my recharging station - fill up the tank with fresh air and inspiration and head back to Basecamp to churn out some interesting work through the week ahead... and of course - to keep me topped up through the week I play my guitars to elevate my meditative state thus providing that little bit of transcendental escapism. What more could you ask for in life... 😎 Cheers Tom, hope you managed to get a bit of time-out to recharge the batteries...lol 👍

Cool video! I really loved building the only guitar I've ever done from scratch, with a Bol RW neck. Super smooth. It sustains for days. I'm looking at building my 2nd guitar in 22 years now, a semi-hollow neck-thru "acoustic" and I keep coming back to wanting to put a Bol RW neck to it.

The best part with this wood for the French polishers is the fine grain closed pores, I know a luthier who loves to use it for that particular reason.

The good news is that the tree is very common in Brazil, easy to seed, diferently of the Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia Nigra). Some Brazilians Luthiers have being using this for years for making "Violas Caipiras", very famous between the country music style.

I love that we have a cheaper and widely available alternative back and sides to traditional woods. It means better cheap guitars for everyone. I bought an Orangewood Cleo and I love the sound. Its clear that nearly all the price savings were using this wood instead of Mahogany. They sound so close. Its a no brainer for anyone without money to burn.

Currently building my second acoustic. First was hand carved cedar archtop thinline with poplar sides and laminate back. More of an exercise of function and process. Now that im keyed into the work ive begun a second project - this will be full body jumbo om - im going with a beautiful piece of full solid poplar for top and bracing - bookmatched and milled by me - this should be okay. It will be Baritone and this poplar will have similar qualities to a cedar top àlthough perhaps a bit wet in the sound. For the back and sides im going with a set of pau ferro i acquired online at a price too good to pass up. After handling and hearing and working with this wood im thoroughly excited and satisfied - only i havnt finished the guitar yet. Still setting the bend into the sides while the top and back wait - so plenty of work yet to be done. Im curious if Tom Sands has any experience or thoughts of working with poplar as an acoustic topwood and if anyone reading this has insight or opinions please share!!

@@TomSandsGuitars I wanted to make it more shiny, it comes very dry and scratchy on the surface, I dont like that feel on my finger tips, if you look on more expensive guitars, they are polished shiny, so then it feels almost like a laquer , fingers glides over it and plays like butter:) I stained woods before and polished it after, and the stain sunk into the woods so no problem polishing it after, but with Pau ferro it doesnt seem to sink into the wood, it's weird, I didn't apply lemonoil or anything on it before my attempt to dye the fretboard. I guess the wood have some natural oil in it resisting the dye to sink in? but Im not sure.

Great video Tom. What’s the magic spray consist of? I always like to see the wood with a wet finish but fear I might warp it if I spray something. Thanks!

Heyyy! 😎I ordered an M6 guitar (body and neck) from Precision Guitar kits, I specified a Pau Ferro fretboard because upon looking online at respective pictures, it's a very warm, unique and beautiful wood. Are there any negatives to it? Because I see people online "whining" about it sometimes... I'm thinking this is because they're li'l b-tches?!? In my opinion, it's more attractive than your common, typical rosewood. I just want to be assured that I made the right choice. 🤔🤗😎 Thanks man!

I think people tend to be very wedded to tradition and allow that to cloud their objective judgement. It will make a fine fingerboard!

Tom you say, at the end of your video, "It's not just in other regions of tropical South America".... I would say It's in Central and North America.as well. As high up as in the Tequila state of Central México, Jalisco. 3700+ miles from Bolivia!!!. Just 780 miles from El Paso Texas USA. Found in the tropical beach city of Puerto Vallarta coordinates of 20.6534° N, 105.2253° W. That's only 195 miles from the Tropic of Cancer!! I think people who are so called experts only know a certain region of Latin America. The South American continent and lump Central America and even México which we all know is part of North America into one big area.

Very interesting. I certainly don’t profess to be an expert, I’m just sharing my journey learning about these wonderful materials and I try to do so sensitively. Thanks as always for your insight, José.
