This is why WWII bombing missions had hundreds of planes dropping thousands of bombs. If you make a couple square miles look like the surface of the moon, a good number of the bombs are guaranteed to hit your target.

By WW2 they had quite sophisticated bombing sights. They still required the large volume of bombs and/or good visibility.

The engine is just there to power the fan in front. The fan is there to keep the pilot cool. You can tell this is the purpose because, if the fan stops, the pilot starts sweating. The stick is to make the houses smaller or larger. Push forward, the houses get bigger. Pull back, the houses get smaller, until they start getting bigger very quickly.

In the run where the closest flour-bomb landed within 30 to 50 feet of the target, assuming that the plane was only going 80 miles per hour, then to hit the target, Brian would have had to drop that bomb 0.256 to 0.426 seconds later. That is such a small margin of error, and to use that information on future runs, you would have to not only assume that all of the wind conditions are the same, but that the pilot is on the exact same line and altitude as well.

@@dmasskill3289 Landing a light plane like this is surprisingly straightforward. C172 is particularly nice for that. The part that takes some getting used to mostly has to do with judging the approach and setting up a glide slope. If you have an instructor next to you who is giving you direction, it's kind of hard to mess up. Couple of hours of instruction and I'm sure they can do it.

That flight footage, especially the take off, reminded me so much of my own flying. Parents bought my a flight lesson for Christmas and like hell I wasn't going to take it. Also the radio communication was surprisingly effective. Not to mention the fact a snoop appeared to catch on quite quick (11:59)

Question: What are the rules regarding doing these flour bombing runs, but instead of flour, it's flower seeds (indigenous to the area, of course)? A sort of rogue aerial bee-food repopulation bombardment?

14 CFR § 91.15: No pilot in command of a civil aircraft may allow any object to be dropped from that aircraft in flight that creates a hazard to persons or property. However, this section does not prohibit the dropping of any object if reasonable precautions are taken to avoid injury or damage to persons or property. / Provided you're not spreading invasive species, you're probably ok, but you would do well to consult an attorney familiar with Federal Aviation Regulations and local ordinances, which I am not.

Y’all probably never hear of it. But there is this program called Civil Air Patrol(CAP) in which I am apart of. CAP is the auxiliary of the air force and just before Bryan was about to take off, they got a small clip of a white, blue, and red Cessna plane. That plane was a CAP plane and I guarantee you that there was a young cadet taking an O-ride. Idk I just thought that was cool.

This reminds me: Way back on Colecovision I had (technically still have) this game called _The Dam Busters,_ and it was the most infuriating thing to play because the whole point was to bomb a dam during WWII at night while also piloting and avoiding AA fire. The instructions were pretty useless as they couldn't just tell you you had to release at a certain height and distance from the target as well as expect the bomb to skip across the water to hit the dam.

4:08 Hey, that is actually a legit fighter combat tactic. The first rule in the first ever air combat tactics manual, the Dicta Boelcke, which was written in 1916, states that you should always attack with the sun at your back, so the enemy has a harder time seeing and engaging you with return fire. So if the Red Brian was worried about Jason shooting at him with a Vickers Gun from the ground, he performed his bombing run from the best possible direction.

I was gonna say! AFAIK this is all pretty much how this sort of thing would have worked during the Great War. Also, I loled at your "bet they don't have this in London" comment! I have seen warbirds drop flower petals at airshows, though, so who knows?! Doing this at night would be an extra layer of challenge for sure!

This is great. I five minutes i figured out witch airport you took off at, and flew along the same flight path in flight sim. i took a wild guess, and when i checked my heading, your pilot called it out. gotta say, that air port is better in real life. less trees to fly into on take off.

Years ago I knew a retired air force Colonel who had his own grass airstrip and we used to do this. We'd mark a giant bullseye on the runway and take turns bombing it with 5 pound bags of flower.

The way you talked at the end sounded like a great way to connect your different kinds of videos. "We should do this again, but with a bigger field...": you can start with the videos where you just throw stuff together and see if it works (still having Cory research it for you if it's one of those more dangerous ones), and intend it to only be an exploratory thing. Then you can get all the feedback from the comments, do some heavier research, and bring in the pros. You already sorta do that, but planning for it to be separate "dumb ideas in a garage" and "done under professional supervision" episodes would give you the opportunity of less backseat driving in the comments complaining about preparation, and more time with the pros (because you would already have done the basics).

The FAA rules on dropping things out of aircraft are wonderfully worded. I remember our CFI telling us about these sorts of competitions at the airport I was taking flight lessons at. It's a wild combination of covering the safety basics and, "Sure, I suppose, if you really want to..." but put into phrasing of a legal document.

I've been on the A300 Zero-G as part of my masters in physics. That is the Airbus A300 test plane that ESA uses for zero-gravity experiments. I've never been that nauseous, down to getting a fever. The issue is mostly the recovery after the zero-g time. Feels like very bad turbulence.

so not gunna lie and no i swear im not as old as one may think by making this statement, but this so reminds me of the episode of MASH. 5oclock charlie. same day every day few his beat up air plane over camp to drop a single bomb by hand trying to hit an ammo depo that was put just outside the wire. my father used to watch MASH everyday so natuarly i grew up watching MASH as well.

I’ve got no clue about the legality or safety of it, but perhaps using a smoke flare to mark drop location? Like they mentioned, it’s probably difficult to see the target from the sky. But if you can see the smoke signal, that should help?

Not that you'll find anyone to do it, but stattic bombing like you're doing here where you fly over a target and drop bombs in a straight line parallel to the target is much less accurate then putting the plane into a dive over the target such that the trajectory of the plane is bisecting the target is more accurate.

@@StrokeMahEgo Even dive bombers didn't go straight down, but more of a very steep bank angle. So even they had issues with accuracy. Not only that, dive bombers had to contend with enemy fire much more than an aircraft that was flying by. A dive bomber is much less of a moving target than one that is moving across the sky.

Brain could definitely have used a CCIP at that point (Computer Calculated Impact Point). They are Reticles that shows up on Fighter Attacker jets such as F/A18 Hornets which shows the pilot where the Dumb Ordinance (none guided ordinance) will land
