Justin described this song as "'Beth seems like this really cool name for a place you just go to be in paradise forever... Eventually, you start waking up to the fact that you might be ready to spend your life with somebody and still feel good about who you are and what kind of changes you're going to go through no matter what. And 'Beth/Rest' is that reward. It's that place you get to be in for the rest of your life…" It's so cool how he depicts that place in this music video.
le-naSty it’s strange how you can listen to a song and it makes you reflect on life and changes your entire perception on how you should live it. Thank god for Justin Vernon.
I'm not sure what Justin's meaning of this section is but it so parallels my final devastating conversation with my then wife after I found out she had been cheating on me behind my back for so long. These are the only lyrics I even "hear" when listening to this song. And it's all I can think about when I hear it. "Aren't we married?" "I ain't living in the dark (of your infidelity) no more" "It's (your marriage vows) not a promise (anymore)" "I'm just gonna call it (calling this marriage off)" As sad as this is to me, I listen to it multiple times a week. It's been 13 years since the event.
@@dasaddestklown2896 stay strong Bud! I already know that you’re still pushing forward with all you’ve got! If you can make it through that, life ain’t going to be able to do anything to you!
How can so many people not like this song? It's brilliant!!! It does have a bit of an 80's Peter Cetera meets Toto meets Pink Floyd sound but it's still a unique, amazing song...Bon Ivers is a great collection of insanely talented experimental musicians. Justin Vernon is a genius songwriter, Bon Ivers is one of the few bands that can leave me speechless from the beauty of the songs they create...the lyrics, arrangements, instrumentation...brilliant, beautiful, perfect.
I once had a 2 hour tattoo session, and had this song on repeat the entire time; it was so calming through the pain. Idk what it's about but I love the feeling of calm/ "Rest" it brings.
Beth/Rest is easily my favorite Bon Iver song and has been since I first heard it. The hate on the 80's sound is absolutely ridiculous. The song showcases the band's range and further proves what amazing musicians they all are. If you want the more usual 'Bon Iver Style' of this song you can listen to the NPR version.
Errant heat to the star And the rain let in And the hawser rolls The vessel's whole And Christ, it's thin Well, I'd know that you'd offer Would reveal it, though it's soft and flat Won't repeat it, cull and coffer's that Or the Prophet, sing this homeward Pry it open with your love Sending lost and alone standing offers It is steep / it is stone Such recovery From the daily press The deepest nest In keeper's keep All the news at the door Such a revelry Well, it's hocked inside Of everything You said to me It was found what we orphaned Didn't mention it, would serve us picked Well your love is known, I'm standing up on it Aren't we married? I ain't living in the dark no more It's not a promise, I'm just gonna call it Heavy mitted love Our love is a star Sure some hazardry For the light before And after most indefinitely Danger has been stole away This is axiom
Bon Iver's melodies are beautiful, but it's all for the better that the autotune makes the lyrics unintelligible, since if the lyrics were audible they'd poison every single song on this album. You get the sense that Justin wants to be someone like Colin Meloy, someone who uses little-known thesaurus words in their music, but has no idea what any of those words mean and thus just strings them together. It's like Bad Lip Reading, except it isn't funny.
I don't know how, but this song manages to capture the feeling when I am waiting for my boyfriend to come out of customs at the airport or I am searching for him in crowd when I get off the plane. The nervousness, the excitement, the anticipation, and finally the moment when we see each other, and it's like all the pain and hurt of being apart was worth it for this instant, when we can make our way towards each other, closing the distance, hearts racing, and feel that sweet embrace.
I sit here and listen as every sentence brings me closer to tears. As the great atmosphere makes me shiver. As i remember her. As i know for sure why i love Bon Iver. As i remember seeing them at Way out west 2012. As i remember crying when they played this song. As i always do. Thank you for inspiring me, thank you for some of the best musical experiences of my life.
Justin Vernon have my heart, and Bon Iver is a part of me that never will go away. When I first heard this song I was like, wow this is not what I expect and I was quite sceptical. But then I really listened to it, and then I TOTALLY fell in love with it! I accepted that it wasn't what I expected from Bon iver, and then I kinda looked out of the box. My point is that I think this song is ABSOLUTELY amazing and I think it's totally worth being a single. And this video is stunning too.
Ive had this song for close to a decade now, I swear every time I play it seems like the first time Im hearing it. Legit takes one to a different level of being. Timeless masterpiece
I experienced this live at the last show of the Bon Iver tour in 2011. I was probably 17, standing with my buddies in the upper seats of Zorn Arena and it was dead quite that whole show, without a dry eye in the house. Give em hell Justin. Eau Claire's behind you.
An absolute masterpiece. Timeless and emotive. There’s a definite Bruce Hornsby vibe/tip of the hat intentional or otherwise, thinking “Mandolin Rain” was somewhere locked away in his subconscious and this was purely Justin translating what the universe was offering at the moment. My favorite song from the record and criminally underrated. Thank you for this Justin💜🔥
Absolutely, It's a terrific song on it's own, but whenn you hear it at the end of the album, it's f'ing magnificent. It is the perfect end to the album. Musically and lyrically, it just completes a story so well.
Going to see em tonight in LA. First show since Covid. Listening to this in my house and I can't cry because there are other people in here, but I want to.
