i think this is very good and i think its brave and a good thing to here talk talk covers because its the closest thing to new stuff from talk talk we are going to here. well done live
I'm sorry mates but Mark Hollis is unique, trying to imitate the timbre of his voice is impossible because it is really innate. In any case, this tribute version to Hollis's musical and interpretive genius is appreciated. Rest in peace dear Mark David Hollis, your legacy only grows with the years.
I'm surprised at all the pretentiousness here. This song was never meant to be filmed and instead is all about the live performance. Anyone expecting a studio quality version should really check themselves. This is a decent cover.
I'm on the hunt for good Talk Talk covers and this is probably the first one on the list. It's crazy how much of the impact of the songs is Mark's delivery; something I implicitly knew but have been shocked to see how much other arrangements feel lacking without it. This one is soulful and tasteful and adjacent to his delivery without going for it.
I'm no music expert but to me the original of this song is one of the best ever written! the space within the song and the timing that leaves you hanging on for the melodic release. no idea how they did it but truly awesome, creating such emotion. Credit to bon ever for bringing it to a wider audience and for seeing its brilliance as well.
Pretty awesome IMO, of course he isn't Mark Hollis but I think this does the original a huge amount of honor. Really tight instrumentation and I think the singer here is very much in the pocket with the song's original mood and atmospheric expression.
I absolutely love Talk Talk but to everyone who is criticising this attempt, remember this is a cover and if his voice sounded anything near to Mark Hollis that would be great ,but Mark was a one of kind a fantastic voice and song writer. This is meant to be a tribute to Talk Talk's music .I think it is a good attempt using the instruments that they have after all , Talk Talk's music is heavily mixed in a studio it would be hard even for Talk Talk to get anywhere near the original live.
Thanks for sharing this one. Now the world knows how Great Talk Talk was. From the colour of spring, the spirit of Eden and Laughing stock,,,, these albums are my personal choice for personal critical listening and testing ANY audio Gear.....Very very hard to supersede the legendary original band.......1986,1988,1991....now were 2015!
GOT this one too..... the one w/ the Sardinian easter bread album cover released in 1998... only have the cd flac file though... unlike the 3 albums I mentioned. I got original issue cd all 3 , re-issue flacs from cd and in 24 bit vinyl....
Benj D.B.S. Mark Hollis' back catalog is really up for a reissue. Only LP i could afford was 'Spirit of Eden'. 'Laughing Stock' and 'Mark Hollis' have been out of print so long it's sad. Where's my audiophile, all analog, 180g remasters with CDs and downloads?
Talk Talk started way before 1986. Why dismiss the earlier stuff? Everything has a foundation. If it wasn't for the commercial success of the previous albums, Hollis would never have been able to produce the later. Think about it.
as a Talk Talk very early listener, I find this version very good because as the song says it's a matter of spirit not of note played or voice sung. Spirit.
valiant effort. Given the state of production Spirit of eden went through and his (mark's) exhausting creative emotional process at the time, trying to recreate a fraction of the mood live was impressive to watch. Good for them. This was a mammoth of a track to even consider covering.
Surely Mark Hollis would approve. A great cover of an even greater song. The environmental movement brought to aural perfection. There is only one Earth.
What bjcaughlin said. My own favourite song. Period. And a good cover during a live concert which wasn't meant to be filmed or compared with the original. Talk Talk and Mark Hollis are incomparable. Credit to a good band paying homage.
Thank you, Ireland. This song is so lovely, and has been bastardized commercially on the net. Thank you, IRELAND! Such a lovely song, such a lovely band. The U.S. remembers them!
@YonderVillas Mark Hollis retired from the music business so his family could lead a 'normal' life. It's fair enough, really. How many rock stars ended up totally messed up in the end?
Don't know if Mark would have not at least raised his eyebrows a bit at a guitar solo in there, but kudos all the same, for at least recognizing the immortality of the tune.
@@philrussell5258 Hi Phil, long time since I request; but the answer is no. I am really interested in the Bon Iver version of the song which does it great justice. I f you get luckey please send my way! wish you well on your journey. Roy
@TheMarkHollis At least they TRIED to do it live. Which is more than you and your boys ever did. (Assuming you are Mark Hollis, which is unlikely, but if you are I'm pissed off at you for leaving us fans in the lurch and retiring. But hey, it's your life. I won't forget.)
Mark Hollis said he could never play the music on The Spirit of Eden live because it would destroy the purity and perfection of the original recording. Besides, playing their latter music in concert would be impossible (for they used an enormous array of instruments for the recording) and the result would probably be just a copy of the album music like you see here.
@Mural Just like Bill Withers...fuck anyone that criticizes either of them for retiring...individuals have to do what's best for themselves and their families. Answering to the political media machines that includes screaming senses fans is for the birds. Mark Hollis is a genius.
O am going to respond on this song by a phrase from my fellow name holder Mr.Hollis:IF YOU PLAY A TWO TONES,THEN FIRST LEARN HOW TO PLAY ONE AND WHEN YOU PLAY THAT ONE TONE,YOU BETTER HAVE A DAMN GOOD REASON TO PLAY IT!!! Bon Iver should learn atleast the lyrics and the feeling of this song!!!
I appreciate this flawed attempt to cover a great song if it brings fans of Bon Iver to seek out the Talk Talk original. It's maybe a little sad that most of the audience probably had no idea that this was a cover, much less who did the original.
Eddy Van Esch as much as I love Bon Iver, I feel that Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock can't be covered adequately. It's like a lost language which can't be translated, but it's perfect and beautiful for what it is.
sorry but that is not what a cover is about. It is about paying homage your way. Expressing the song with your personality and not being a copy cat but you non musicians want artists to play to the peanut gallery.
the band sounds great they can tealy feel the song SORRY FOR THE SINGER !! i respect you are trying it but its realy nothing i try to mae a mark hollis style instrumental here !
too slow, kick drums are off, energy and nuance of the guitar replaced by looping 2 chords, vocals trying too hard sounds way too bland with no heart or edge, bass doesn't let low notes ride and instead blends them into the kick drum (which are off), keys are off and overbearing, solo section is an entirely different song.
Nice to cover this, maybe some of his fans will find Talk Talk. Sadly, he can´t really shine with voice, it sounds really mediocre but instruments (especially Moog) are spot on.
there are two rules when you intend to cover a song: 1. play it at least as good as the original - failed, because that's simply impossible 2. if you can't play as good as the original song, play it better or at least in a different style - failed, to close to the original there should be a third rule: Don't cover any TALK TALK song ever, you can only fail
Yeah great. Lacks all of the otherworldly depth and space and subtlety of the original. I don't wanna be negative, but please don't cover any more Talk Talk songs. They're not meant to be covered!
if there is a way to destroy a supurb song full of feeling and emotion this is it total sacralidge to ruine one of the best songs ever written, by one of the best bands of all time such a shame it came to an end but what a way to finish
That's exactly the way to ruin a masterpiece. Bad signer with a bad voice (with absolutely no deepness). Bad beat rendering, bad sound. Please dont play that song if you are incapable to express the profound beauty of it.
