I'm starting to feel a bit foolish. I'm a serious rock music fan in my 40's. I love The Stones, The Jam, Roxy Music, Joy Division, The Smiths, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, the Velvet Underground, Bowie, Costello, Dylan, Radiohead, U2, The Doors, Pearl Jam, Van Morrison - so how the FUCK did I miss this fantastic band?
Sometimes, it happens. In the 80s, I was in to Talk Talk, U2, R.E.M., Jesus and Mary Chain, and even Bauhaus. What band is missing from that lineup? The Cure. It took me until Disintegration to get into them. It happens sometimes. As for this album, I totally didn’t get it when it came out. 21 year old me didn’t have the ear for the genius on this album. When 40-something me listened to it again (after getting into serious jazz - like John Coltrane), I got it, and it blew my mind.
The Colour Of Spring is a magnificent and overlooked album. They produced three awesome albums. If you haven't already tried the take a look at The Blue Nile. Particularly the album 'Hats'.
You are saying all the right things about this band. Haunting, emotional, ethereal and spiritual! You expect nothing less from Talk Talk. Keep listening brother! 🙏
"I believe in You" is my personal highlight on the album - I loved to watch your reaction on this because it did`nt disappoint me at all - I could literally see how it touched you emotionally and this is a good thing and the very impact of the song - I have this ritual every year of strolling through the woods around the first breath of spring and listen to this song - As soon as the "Angel`s Choir" kicks in i`m flooded with emotions that my eyes begin to tear up - A wonderful atmosphere that can hardly be found in any other song except maybe "The great Gig In the Sky" by Pink Floyd....
Everyone knows where they were when they heard Mark had passed......walking into Macdonalds Milton junction Didcot on the A34...... I just walked in and sat down ......I didn’t wanna eat after I’d heard that
Gorgeous song Having lost my wife , totally get it Few words cause there aren't any that give any meaning reason or solace The song is more of a prayer to whoever might be listening. And now that Mark is gone i only can say RIP and thank you Mark for this gorgeous gift
you nailed it,...this song is about Mark Hollis's Brother, who died on overdose, iwish the best for you snowdog87 for your lost (sorry for my inglish,...) saludos desde Barcelona!
This track was written, recorded and released on Spirit of Eden before his brother died, but I speak from experience when I say that if you lose a loved one to heroin addiction, you lose them before they die....
A great reaction! Thank you for taking my request. I really appreciated the look on your face throughout and at the end when you were describing how it affected you. I was exactly the same when I first heard it (back in the 90s, when I was a lot younger, which is why it's stuck with me so hard). I don't think about the lyrics because the voice plus all the instruments all just add to one big, holistic sense of atmosphere and emotion. Even without knowing the 'meaning' of the song, it works to push my mood and emotions in a certain way, and that's all I want. :)
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I *love* when the music and the voice alone can make me feel so strongly. The lyrics certainly can add to that feeling, but I'm a happy camper with just the effect the music and vocals have on me.
Have you ever listened to the rest of "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock"? Both Albums are overwhelming. LS > "After the flood" !!! would be worth a listening and reaction
