To the people arguing about Birdy's cover: I heard that first and thought it was gorgeous and went searching for the original, and am now a huge fan of Bon Iver. Covers are a good thing, they help great music reach new audiences.
Birdy sucks period. I cant take it when some kid who has a monotone nasally voice with no emotion to sing a song that they don't know the meaning of the lyrics. Bon Iver fucking locked himself a way for months in a cabin when life was getting him down and wrote this master peace and him singing it you can tell by his voice how much emotion there is. Because these are his feelings and thoughts and no one can beat this no cover can.
While I do believe birdy is a phenomenal singer, it is not right she gives no credit to bon Iver in her title misleading people into thinking that it is her song when in fact it's actually a cover of a legendary artist.

Hersheyyy I totally agree. The original has a feel and his voice is so much better sounding with this song. I think birdy sounds good but her version is too light and doesn't have as much emotion as bon ivers version IMO.
I burnt this song on a CD back in 2009. It was my first year of University (yes I am that old) in a new city and I felt so lost and lonely. I used to listen to Skinny Love all the time and cry. 13 years later it still hits me right in the feels as soon as the song starts, but it's still one of my very favourites.
Same year of 2009, same status of a fresh student in the first semester, similar feeling of a new big city with all the friends left back home - can totally relate to that comment of yours. As soon as this song came out in 2008 when I was just 14, I fell in love with it and now I am 18 I still love it! So 6 days ago I turned 18 (yay) and I wanted a tattoo on the day of my birthday... What tattoo idea did I think of? Of course I thought of Skinny Love! So on 25/10/2012 I got '' I told you to be patient, fine, balanced, kind'' around my thigh, I am so happy that I got it! Beautiful, bittersweet memories to this song. Driving through a forest, during a heavy snow, with my ex. No other cars, no streetlights...we could have been the last two on earth. And in that moment, I'd have been happy if that were the case. The relationship may not have been a pleasant one, but memories as serene and beautiful such as these made the pain worthwhile.
same man, my ex loved this song and i loved her. Too bad she cheated on me. But at the end of the day, in just a few months, it made me a much stronger man. Or atleast a 23 year if you would all me a man haha
I heard Birdys version first on pandora, fell in love, found the original, and fell in love all over again. This song... It is beauty. True musicianship.
I love how its like super sad if you listen the lyrics, but still souds kind of happy if you dont listen the lyrikcs so carefully. But in the end of the song you can hear the pain in his voice over the "happy melody"... :'(

Justin Vernon wrote this album in northern Wisconsin. I lived in the northern midwest for most of my life, and his songs really resonate with me that way. The midwest is a place that nobody who doesn't live there cares about. It's not spectacular or exciting. Those who live there know not to care about this, but to make their lives spectacular and exciting by the memories they make and the things they do, making their lives more intimate and real. This is really reflected in Bon Iver's songs.

This is song opened a door for me in way that I've realized you need to love yourself to love other and most importantly to embrace life and make everyday as your best. It's a sin not to get a back up and there are always people there for you.
I've discovered Bon Iver and Ben Howard today! i feel fucking lucky been listening to their music for the past 5 hours. absolutely beautiful and speaks to my soul.

I believe that the ones who makes music can often save lives. It's my case, I live through music. I feel so much depressed in this time, but I want to live and to move on. This song came in my life the first time so long ago, now I remember it, I feel some kinda hope I wish I can overcome all my bad thoughts, and I am so in debt with music that keeps me company and makes me feel I have to hold on for beauty and emotions that gaves me.
None is better than the other, i personlally prefer the guitar over a piano on this song, and that is just my prefference, someone else might like a piano over a guitar. Listen to what you feel like, and don't make others choose for you.

I think that this song reminds me of my daddy because he passed away a couple of weeks ago and it is like my dad is singing it to me it makes me very sad that he is gone but it also makes happy that I know that he is in a better place.😇😭😥😓 I miss him so much and that is why I love this song because it reminds me of him.

I think this is beautiful. I had only heard Birdy's version, and hers made me feel things I had forgotten. Bon Ivers' version of it makes me feel other things that I had not forgotten. Possibly just unresolved. Either way BOTH are amazing!
I don't know what cover you were listening to but the one I heard was amazing. I know that this is the original and I actually like it too. This song helped Birdy break out into the music industry which is such a good thing because she has so much talent, unlike all the crap you see these days with auto tune and music that depends on heavy beats. It's rare to see pure talent break out these days and you should be happy that this song helped some REAL talent break out.
This is REAL emotion here. Birdy was just doing a cover. I think people like her version more because one; her voice is soft and haunting and two; her version is depressing with the piano and everything else. This song reminds me of Pumped Up Kicks by The Fosters. It's a song with sad, real emotion but the happy upbeat track is an attempt to hide it. I perfer this one, but I am not going to lie and say "OH I KNEW THIS WAAYYY BEFORE BIRDY". Cause no, I didn't. It took Birdy's cover to find this, so I am thankful. Yes, I do like Birdy's cover and she really does have talent, it's just this one is more authentic.
I love how Birdy made a cover of Bon Iver's 'Skinny Love'. It has assured me Justin and his group are un-matched let alone unbeatable and will continue to be for a long time. Birdy can smd and do covers while Justin does something worth meaning in this world.
Is anyone else pissed that Birdy became more famous with this song than Bon Iver and he was the one that orignally sung and wrote it? I know I am, I get more emotional over Bon Iver's version because you hear the pain in his voice and just imagine him going through this chapter in his life and plus it related to most relationships.
I only find out today, by reading some comments on a birdy performance. Birdy just had the voice, an incredibly breathtaking singing style and the piano and she blew the song and herself out of the stadium. In fact Birdy made it one of the greatest songs and performances to exist in my book.
When I was going through a break up, I'd understand every line and every metaphor. Now that time has passed, I've forgotten some feelings and a few lines are fuzzy again. I'm not complaining tho. Fun fact: that love lasted for 11 months then I gave up. I used to really regret it didn't last the year, we were so close

To be honest Birdy laid a whole different feel into the song. Bon iver's original has this "I'm kinda hella sad but its allright-ish I guess" vibe while Birdy's cover just says "I'm sad". Like both though.
