Bonanza - Episode 87 - Gift of Water - With tensions with a drought-stricken neighboring flatland rising, the Cartwrights decide to address the problem by helping a stubborn flatland homesteader dig a new well.
Gift of Water
Director: Jesse Hibbs
Writer: Borden Chase
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 11 February 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
A drought has ravaged the flat lands and Hoss stops to water at the Ganther farm where Jason Ganther is attempting to dig a well and get to water which he believes is just a few further feet down. Hoss decides to help him and they begin drilling for water. Meanwhile ranchers in the high country have started up a vigilante group to keep families from leaving the flat lands and settling in the high country where water is plentiful. Disgusted by the vigilantes the entire Cartwright family soon begins helping the Ganthers. Tensions mount between the two groups as the Cartwrights race against time to find the water before violence erupts. Written on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"About the only interesting thing about this episode is that Majel Barrett and James Doohan are both in it, although Doohan doesn't have much of a part. Majel Barrett looks much better in her natural hair color, without her bleached-blonde Star Trek do.
There's a drought on and families in the flat lands are getting ready to move off to greener pastures, except one landowner who refuses to leave and is determined that a water spring is just below the surface. The Cartwrights help the owner's family. For some reason that makes no realistic sense, several men, landowners in the higher lands form a vigilante group to stop any families attempting to move through to more fertile ground. And yeah, that's about it.
The spunky little girl (an obvious precursor to the smart-mouth sitcom kids), daughter to the family they're helping, was the most annoying." Written by uber_geek on IMDb.com
"The coincidental presence of Star Trek prime regulars James Doohan and Majel Barrett are an interesting side note to this Bonanza story about some homesteaders looking for water and the local cattlemen not sharing their's.
Barrett is the wife of homesteader Royal Dano who has been persuaded by the Cartwright sons to dig for some underground sources of water. All three of the boys work hard at getting that underground water to the surface.
In the meantime a nice little range war is threatening to break out instigated by Paul Birch and Harry Lauter with the cattlemen. James Doohan is one of the other homesteaders.
A little hard work, a little faith, and some different ideas and it's mission accomplished by the Cartwrights." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Notice how each Cartwright made a contribution to the task, which ultimately led to a successful outcome: Hoss with the Auger, Adam with the pipe, Joe with the mule, and Ben with the windmill. A great example of the value of cooperation and teamwork.

Bonanza had the most heart warming stories of any TV westerns. Ben Cartwright had an incredible amount of kindness and compassion for his neighbors and fellow man. His patience and understanding were approaching godliness at times. He was always willing to share his fortune with those less fortunate.

A TV show reflects the generation it was made and produced in. While episodes like this are great and touching one mustn't forget that some of the earliest shows were still made when society was at its lowest with racism and discrimination and has made a comeback in the present. While this show was a great classic, with a talented cast, great but sometimes incomplete stories, interesting characters, and life lessons we can relate to....we mustn't forget that it was made during a time when man was dehumanizing his fellow man. Something we must still fight and defeat in the present.
@dennishardy3869
@dennishardy3869 2 года назад
@@reidhirsh3338 Yes Mr. Hirsh. I very much understand your point. I don't think alot of us will ever forget the dehumanizing of other races. I'm all too familiar with alot of that which happened even before my time. I've seen alot of movies which showed me the ugliness that took place. It was really sad of what happened to alot of blacks, Mexicans alike. I am even ashamed of alot of my white ancestors. And watching and enjoying shows like Bonanza episodes doesn't mean I forget. Hoss on Bonanza was very much against racism. As alot of us are. I am no racist. We're all children of our most high preacher God. And that's the way I feel.

Maybe not the quote-unquote best episode, but by far my favorite 😊Everything that endeared me to Bonanza shines in this episode. Love how it highlights the strengths of each of the Ponderosa boys: Hoss's bighearted idealism, Adam's observant and tactical brilliance, Joe's playful creativity, Ben's fierce moral fiber. At the end of the day, this episode (like the series as a whole) is about a family who loves each other, supports each other, works hard together, plays together, and ultimately does what's right together.

She is part and parcel to one of the most recognizable and highest-grossing media franchises of all time. Wouldn't it be beneficial to all if Bonanza and all there episodes were reproduced for the generations of today to enjoy ! Of course the actors of the Cartwright's would have to play the exact mannerisms, characters, morals, empathy, wisdom, fairness, and strength of the original characters ! Loved every character , named my son Adam , Adam Cartwright was the mysterious brother, a thinker, always six moves ahead of the others on a chess board ( so to speak ) and had a faster draw than his little brother Joe LOL, that was never gonna be proven LOL ! Yeah , loved Bonanza, father and sons ! Showing how to behave and do things the morally right way .

I wonder how many different episodes of how many different series Royal Dano appeared in. Never a leading man, he got as much screen time as some of the giants of the industry. And though he generally played the meek as the milquetoast character he also occasionally played the heavy. He was equally good at either. Too bad series like this are ancient history, never to be made again. "Modern" TV leaves me cold for the most part. What today compares?

Absolute stellar episode a little faith, belief, and hard work, the lesson here is never giving up, the vacuum will answer itself. It's physics in other words E=MC 2 rd, emotions are equal to mass, mass is emotional content which equals effect is equal to cause, the cause is the vacuum of needing what's always substance which in this case is water. Thank you, Gringo, for posting all of these! I'm discovering Bonanza for real for the first time, and I'm astounded by the range of ideas and emotions this series has. Aside from the tension of the vigilante crew - which we always know doesn't threaten the Ganthers because they are determined to stay on their land - "Gift of Water" is essentially about the Cartwrights working together to solve an engineering problem. And yet how much interest and drama and personal interactions the story has!

I sure got a jolt when watching the closing credits to Gift of Water. I recognized the actress playing Lindy as the actress who played Maureen Beebe in the movie Misty, and Royal Dano playing her father Jason. I saw him on The Big Valley in an episode called Hide the Children. What I, a big fan of Star Trek TOS, did not recognize were Majel Barrett, the actress who played Nurse Chapel, played Lindy's mother, or James (Scotty) Doohan, who played one of the cowboys. This is why I appreciate people like Grjngo who include them whereas too many others leave them out.

In my binging on Bonanza, I've come across three Star Trek alumni so far: James Doohan and Majel Barrett Roddenberry in this episode, and DeForest Kelley in a previous episode. It's like finding Easter eggs!

Very nicely understated episode. Great character building too. More shows need to give you time to sit with the characters like this episode does!

This episode and the episode with the little green men, or leprechaun episode, best 2 episodes ever. I believe they were midget’s. Hilarious episode

I knew a man who fell into a bin of grain seed. It was impossible for him to climb up and out of it and he died smothered in the grain seed. When they missed Bill, they emptied the grain bin and found his body. What a horrible way to die, knowing that they’re was no hope of his being rescued.

Artesian bore. 1/2 of Australia has an artisan basin were sandstone below the surface acts like a sponge to all the water that flows down the western side of the great dividing range.

In those days neighbors depended on each other. Wish I had that farmers optimism. He just wouldn't quit. When you don't give up, and keep trying even after repeated failure, sometimes you do find a way. There's an old saying "where there's a will there's a way". Lot of truth in it.

Perseverance frequently wins out over optimism. Combine them and you have a winner.

It seemed like everyone had something to contribute towards this project,. The old man believing that there's water down there, Haas and his auger drilling down to where it is, Adam adding the piping to keep the sand from falling into the hole 🕳️, and Ben and pigtails got to use a windmill to pump the water out. A perfect example of how a small project can snowball into something larger, much larger 🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎

I think this was the same year Hoss started the first Bonanza steakhouse restaurant. Or maybe that was in 1963.😊.

I don't believe William Shatner, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei or Walter Koenig were ever on Bonanza, but the others were.
