Storyline:
Guest star Larry Gates is cast as Jacob Darien, the leader of a Quaker sect which has purchased land in California. While crossing the Ponderosa in a special wagon transporting the money for the land transaction, Jacob's daughter Regina (Patricia Donahue) persuades her father to have Adam and Hoss Cartwright act as escorts for the Quaker wagon train. Accompanying the Cartwright boys is Adam's new friend Sam Bond (Dennis Patrick)-who secretly schemes to steal the Quakers' funds at the first opportunity. Rounding out the supporting cast is Charles Maxwell as Shenandoah.

"Is violence bad? That seems to be the question in this episode. When Adam comes upon a wagon train of quakers (or Amish...), he falls for the red-headed girl. But they are made fun of in town, and Adam decides to go away with the girl since he's falling in love with her.
He meets a "friend" along the way. He's down on his luck and has a familiar name, but Adam decides to hire him at the ranch. Then he leaves. Sometimes though, our friends are not who they appear to be. After Adam's friend comes back with his friends, he kills the leader of the Quacker train and Adam seeks revenge on the man. Pernell Roberts does a wonderful job when it comes to handling his horse Sport,, he seems to be quite a handful but then again he could deal with just about anything that he sets his mind to. Love this episode. Pernell and his actual girlfriend doing a magnificent job 👍💯

Adam is too much of a protector to marry into that group. Those people are overly meek. They will allow anybody to just come in and harm their women and children without even trying to protect. Adam is too big of a man to be a part of such a weak congregation.

@@deborahsojourner6755 I always heard that, while the show was actually airing, Adam was the one who received the most fan mail. Either way, it definitely wasn't the same show without him. Every family needs at least one cynic...and that goes DOUBLE for a rich family!

Sarina...I agree. I also think, or surely tend to believe that a small minority of actors' performances, as Pernell (Adam) did here and in all the shows where he was the lead player...that somehow, though playing a part, they somehow show something of themselves, i. e., some part of who/how they really are as a person comes through. I read, also saw Pernell in interviews and he was loved by all, the only one he had trouble he had was Mr. Dortort, producer, when Adam said he'd seen the shows so obviously the same nearly every week and any change was only different actors but the basic core had Ben & the "boys" always the same (except Adam for he was so fine an actor he would fight against what lazy Landon and Hoss simply played every week. It is difficult to explain, sort of, on here, this way. My sister would have loved to have met Pernell. In his several year series, "Trapper john, M.D." his great acting came through no matter what. I compare him to Spencer Tracey who had that something extra that moves people very much. Please forgive my small book here. I like discussing a good film, actor or a book.

p.s. I cannot recall how many persons told me that "Adam Cartright" was their favorite too and disliked it a lot when Pernell Roberts left the series...it is too long here to tell why he left and why he may have stayed. I believe he would have stayed the 14 full years had the series been more realistic in some ways, such as that. I hardly ever watched after Roberts left; he was a fine, fine dramatic actor. I love the music in here. I do not like the regular intro music except for that 1st(?) year.

I liked watching this episode where Adam and Hoss worked together without Ben and Little Joe because it showed the very serious and smart side of Hoss. This was a refreshing change. Hank Patterson played the 2nd blacksmith here. He also played Mr Ziffel in "Green Acres."

Indeed! There was no sibling rivalry between these 2 brothers, more mature, not so Hot headed as Lil Joe. I grew up watching Bonanza after church every Sunday night at 9. Out of church at 8:55 I ran home... Bonanza was where the real life lessons were portrayed...Ben was like a father image to me. This was a great episode, one of the best... Long live the Spirit of this show... ~~~~~~~~~~£ar~~~~~~~~

"Adam" and that great star that played him was special...maybe my favorite actor. I loved it when Adam and Hoss were together, they both older than that little strange Little oe and it was always a better story when the episodes were dramatic and not the more regular silly or same over & over scripts. I knew/know now, many that will love this show forever. I hate the sad endings. There was no reason that Adam and the woman could not marry and she be part of the story. Westerns do irritate me a lot...not sensible & are mostly the same thing, etc. I very seldom watched it after Pernell Roberts quit the show.

@@wally1452 Well I agree, I preferred the shows when Adam was in them and I only saw it in reruns as I am only 51. However, according to my mom, Adam was the least favourite Cartwright. Perhaps that's why Roberts left, he wanted to go out when the show was on top, and before he became type cast, especially as not popular.

@@ianarchibald1423 Thanks Ian. In last 60 years, since inception of this series, this the 1st time I heard a negative re Pernell Roberts. I know people disagree but Pernell has done the stage, Shakespeare...things of real substance and he wanted more shows as this one, something with that substance Bonanza lacked on any kind of regular scale. I agree there were some shows that were okay after "Adam" left but for myself, I saw right away the depth and excellence in this man's character.

@@jeffreyrogers8151 Thanks for reply, I like reading the other viewers thoughts...discussing a film, a book is/has been uplifting for me always, since a boy over 60 years ago. Yes, agreed there were some good ones after Pernell R. left but they were like any other same old western. I cannot name but maybe a few realistic westerns; so much silliness and myth in all of them. It was very distinctive to me re the very different shows with the maturity and some reality in the Pernell Roberts episodes. I got tired of Little oe kissing a pretty girl, wanting to marry after a kiss, or that awful explosion because he never controlled temper. I liked your comment sir.

This is a great episode, but - being a huge Adam fan - I find it hard to watch !! You can practically hear Adam's heart breaking in that last scene.

Yeah. But he made the right decision. He could not be among those people. Adam is a man...a protector of women and children; among other traits as well. He doesn't believe in allowing others to come in and run havoc over his community. Real men protect their community. Adam and Hoss are cut from the same cloth. They don't belong with these people.

As a young girl my father would watch this show, he was upset when Hoss, or the man who played the character, passed away. I watched one or two episodes, but being young I thought them all old and a silly show ( like firing into a crowd of people and they all scatter without getting hit. :). Now I Just started watching during the Pandemic. And enjoy seeing the new stars who became famous. RIP all the Cartwright's.

Great, great story...Pernell Roberts was magnificent as always. He was my favorite actor and I have seen so many films in last 70 years. I wish they had him in the series (as the main character in the episodes, more often.) I like this series a lot although there are those percentage of shows, of course, that lack much interest.) What I am saying here is that the series shines much more when Pernell Roberts is in it. I never cared for Little oe much at all with his usually lousy temper, his (most of the time immaturity with women and his fighting in every show.) But there is a lot of good in this different type of western, also that the Cartrights for most part were well educated and good people.

@@natvan29 Thanks for good comment. I surely liked this episode a lot. Also, in many shows they had proper music, beautiful music to fit the scene. Almost every film I have ever seen, especially westerns, the music goes sky high and it is usually awful. Robert Redford was one who finally got the point about music in a story...his "Out of Africa" was great...Mozart.

I think there was a great complementary value within the cast...Adam perfectly offset the others. He wasn't as soft hearted as Hoss, or as Ben BECAME in later years...he wasn't as impetuous as Joe...Let's face it, a rich family HAS to have at least ONE cynic...or they won't be rich for very long!!! In fact, I even thought Adam's LOOK was a perfect complement to the rest of the cast, as well....the others were usually in shades of brown(and Joe's perennial green jacket)....Adam's all-black ensemble perfectly offset the others...it made them LOOK better as a group. In every respect, Adam was perfect for what he was....They still had some good episodes after he left, but the chemistry was never the same.

SHARON BAKER we use to watch these episodes all the time,,,, & I agree,,, shows to-day have no messages in them,,,(maybe 1 or 2,,, ) but these had values which you could pass on to children,,& even friends. We as a family would watch them together.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻,,GD BLESS.

Living in Summit County, Ohio. The largest Amish community is in Holmes County which is about 45 minutes away, I love going there any chance I can. Got use to their simple way of living. Being from Southeast Asia, fit in perfectly.

People will either agree or disagree with a comment, naturally. BUT, the commentor is ALWAYS posting only their opinion, so what is the point to disagree with a personal opinion. Though it would be fun to have a vote..Adam vs. Joe. LOL Joe (my opinion) is good looking, but doesn't appeal to me in the least. Adam is handsome and quite sexy, I like his looks even in the show Trapper John MD.

Adam's horse is forever throwing his head, fighting the bit and side stepping. When is someone going to figure it out? Surely it should be obvious to his rider or someone on the set.

It’s the only time in the whole series that I see Pernell the actor lose it at 23:27. Sport is moving so much Pernell can barely get off the horse & when he does he yanks the reins a bit. I think sport knew Pernell was not entirely comfortable on horses, and was reflecting that back to him.

Ive noticed that too. I think Adam just likes to RIDE this way so it looks flashy on CAMERA. I don't think for one minute he can NOT handle a horse. I saw him guest star on THE BIG VALLEY WESTERN with Nick Bark;ley and e ADAM rides normal on that show. They were huting a mountian lion and not once did ADAM ride like a prancer.

Pernell Roberts was actually dating the actress that played Regina at the time this episode was filmed - so any 'passion in his kisses' wasn't necessarily 'acting' ! :)

I love the old English that these Quakers used when they spoke just like the old English that the 1611 King James Authorized Version of God's Holy Word the Bible which is inerrant and infallible uses. That might be why they do that.

@@lynettepalecek3141 it's actually because in the 1600s, 'thee' and 'thou' were used in less formal settings than 'you' (which was used when talking to someone of higher standing than you). It was a way of engaging with everyone in the spirit of equality.

Actually, those other men were up to no good any way. They are rogues, thieves and bushwhackers. Once they took notice of those people, they were going to attack the wagon train any way because that's what they do; they wreak havoc. Luckily, Adam and Hoss were there to offer some protection.

She never blamed him, she said so herself, it was Adam who blamed himself, I thought that that was very honest and noble about him and he did all that he could to avenge all of the troubles that felt that he had caused so yeah I will applaud him for seeking to correct something that wasn't really his fault, it just happened

The actress was about 3 years older than Pernell. She did a good job in this episode. But I do think she was not pretty, not even handsome - a dog face.

I've seen a photo of Pernell and the woman who played Regina while they were dating. It can be seen on the Google site. I just pulled up their names pertaining to the 2 of them and it came up, they're sitting at a table

Watch when he signals the horse with the bit. (stops and turns at speed) He is very heavy handed. He yanks the bit and hurts the horse's mouth. Less bit and more leg signals would fix it.

@11:25 Adam being socially awkward trying to talk to the woman might be relatable to some people in the audience, but this doesn't really make sense for Adam's character. Adam has grown up socializing with other people, and with women. I could see Hoss tripping over himself, but not Adam. Also pretty silly that Adam is demonized at the end for trying to stop a serial murderer and robber.

I agree, I watched an episode where 'Pa' was 'stepping out' with an actress who was passing through town. Adam paid her a visit, and planted a man's kiss on her and walked away. Then he says to his brothers' 'she's an actress'. in such a scathing manner, he made it sound worse than 'prostitute'. It was such a funny episode I had to watch it twice for the laughs of Joe and Hoss sneaking out the window to go and watch the actress because Adam's bedroom door was still open. And lo and behold Adam was there in the line up before the two got there. Then after the show having a drink in the saloon, Ben comes in with the actress and Hoss says, Pa! The look on the boy's faces was priceless and they all try to hide their faces. Now that I've written that, I'll go and watch it for the third time and have laughs again.

Pernell Roberts was 31 years old when he was cast as Adam Cartwright, Lorne Green was only about 13 years older than him and Dan Blocker was the same age as Pernell so no Lorne wasn't 50 and Pernell Roberts wasn't 40 years old. Lorne Green was born February 12th , 1915, Pernell Roberts was born May 18 th 1928 and Dan Blocker was born December 10th, 1928 same year, as Pernell Roberts , Lorne Green was 44 years old and Pernell Roberts and Dan Blocker were both 31 years old when they first started Bonanza in 1959

Good episode but again, could have been a lot better if they were more realistic in the script. What imo would have been better would have been to let Adam realize that fighting the outlaws would be to risky given the circumstances, and instead, give the group back their money out of his own pocket. If he had done that he would have saved Regina's father and Mathew and kept the girl he loved (Regina). Then, Adam could have married in the show, probably keeping the best member of the cast (Pernell) from leaving. I also enjoyed how Adam and Hoss interacted in this episode and the show should have took advantage of that chemistry.

I got the impression that they were supposed to be Amish or Mennonite. It's not mentioned on the show, probably because the writers didn't feel it was necessary to be that specific about it. It was enough that they were some kind of a pacifist sect.

So where exactly was this Slatersville? Was it made up only for this show, or what? Has the town since been renamed? The only Slatersville I found is in RI. None in CA or NV. The only Quaker settlement of note that's close to the Ponderosa would be Quaker Hill, which is in Nevada County. When you pull up the Wikipedia on it there's like 50 ghost towns listed just in that one county alone.

Things only a trained eye can see. Script writer must have been high writing this episode and at time stamp 34:15 camera pans right to left from Adam to the grave mourners. There the lighting is contradicted. Sunny bright day blocked by a row of men and to light the grave they reflected the light coming from a source opposite the Sun. Are there two Suns? The director must have been high on the set, he should have changed camera placement and if you want to emphasize the grave then put up front in the shot, mourners in the background, and the Sun light bleeding all over them.

Looks aren't everything. I've seen some people that may not be the best looking, but they are so beautiful inside and have a heart of gold. Hoss is a good example. I would rather have Hoss than Joe.
