If you're going to have a heart attack, Bondi is a good place to do it. The lifeguards are so experienced and they're used to getting to someone in seconds.

Watching the CPR kinda broke me, I'm not even sure why. Looks so scary to do. My uncle died of a heart attack in a restaurant about 4 months ago. He was 44 years old. Never really told anyone anything. Breaks me to think there could have been signs or pain and he just didn't mention it to his friend at the time. He went in seconds. 4 different people tried CPR and couldn't help him. I remember answering the door to the police at 2:30am asking for my dad(my uncles brother)and receiving the news. Hurts me to think how worried the wife would have been and the panic. So glad he did fine and everyone there worked as quickly as possible. Well done!

I’m so terribly sorry for your loss. My godfather was found dead in his home in 2013 after being unusually quiet for longer than he usually was (he was wonderfully eccentric & it wasn’t abnormal for him to be very chatty to everyone for a week & then become introverted for a week or so as he let his creative juices flow - he was an artist as well as a writer). He didn’t turn up at his sisters for dinner on the Sunday so that’s when they decided to check on him & found him. He was more like my best friend / uncle / father figure all rolled into one, I still remember that phone call & I still remember my screams - something out of a movie. I always thought people were over exaggerating with responses like that but that shock hits you like a freight train. I still cry all of these years later - miss him terribly. I have spoken to my GP in length however about his passing as he passed suddenly from a huge heart attack, & I’m not sure if this will bring you any comfort but it was so quick & so sudden that he wouldn’t have known what was going on.. if your uncles passing was very sudden also, it’s possible he wasn’t at all aware of what was happening either. My father has had 2 heart attacks & he was aware of both, they’re considered ‘mild’ (he wasn’t like this guy) but he still felt discomfort, he was pale / clammy etc. If you’re ever around anyone who has heart difficulties or suspected heart difficulties give them an aspirin underneath the tongue. If you’re male or have male siblings - please make sure to get checked out regularly from your 40’s onwards, really important when heart issues run in families (I only mention men as us women tend to naturally have more check ups any way). Take care, sorry for the long comment. x

I remember tending to my first heart attack patient. And I’m only 16 but since im a qualified first aid responder I had to go and help out. (We get message notifi if we are in the area and there’s a reported heart attack case and needs any CPR) when we do CPR sometimes ribs break and it gets really heartbreaking for me to have to continue. This patient was like 60 years old and I felt so horrible having to continue CPR. He survived but luckily o responded. I had one patient who was family before and I felt distraught when I couldn’t save her. I always feel guilt when I’m at the scene and something bad happens with the patient

As you age your metabolic rate slows, it isn’t unusual for older men to carry excess weight around their middle - even kerrbox & H do & look how fit they are / were - they were lifeguards well into their 50’s & 60’s. This man swam laps at Bondi most days, size isn’t always an indication of health. I have a neighbour 2 doors down who’s tall, scrawny & fit - runs three times a day, cycles, & yey has a pace maker. Heart issues often run in familys & although weight may not always help, it certainly isn’t always to blame for heart problems. More often than not they’re hereditary.

1. They watched the arrest... That would have been the perfect time for a Precordial Thump. Isn't it used in Australia, or did they just decide to wait for analysis of the AED? 2. It may be controvers, but showing a real CPR on TV is a realy good thing in my opinion (IF the patient and his people are ok with it). Not thinkable in Germany, but it would help the public to know what it would be if they have to do cpr and take a little bit of fear. 3. I'm a little surprised that it looks like the Oxygen, Defib and other utilities aren't packed together and have been delivered seperately. There has to be one bag with everything you could need inside, an other one as a backup at the tower and a third to treat patiens in the tower. Sure higher at the costs on first viev but better for logistics, time-management, not that personel-intensive and easier to handle. Although nice job. If the telphonecall from Nicola was "live" it was amazing. I think you can't find better words to inform someone about a situation like this.
@rox1601
@rox1601 9 лет назад
***** Thanks for the answer :) But why not? In Bavaria the First Responders get tought it. But only use it if the arrest is watched. Sounds a little harsh, but: When I watch the cardiac arrest, then the blood is still oxygenated. So there is enough time to give it a try. The sternal cartilages will get hurt anyway...

What is prebodail thump? I work in daycare have been trained is first aide and CPRv
@rox1601
@rox1601 9 лет назад
Precardial thump is simply said a really hard punch against the thorax, in case of a cardiac arrest. The heart may be starting again or it may break an ventricular fibrillation. I can't discribe the exact medical mechanism - especially not in english ;) - but it often works. Condition is, that it has to be done very shortly after the arrest happened. So I learned to use it just when I watched the arrest - hasn't happened now.... Children are not the usual patients to use it. If their circulation stops the most common problem is respiratoric not cardial. (As much as i learned)
@suzan6254
@suzan6254 3 года назад
@@rox1601 Pericordial thump is far inferior to a defibrillator. It has a very low succes rate and may potentially make matters much worse (can even cause cardiac arrest or injure other vital organs) so it should only be used if a defibrillator is not available and you are sure that a persons heart has just stopped beating. Defib gives a precise shock while the pericordial thump gives an unprecise messy shock with additional blunt trauma.
@rox1601
@rox1601 3 года назад
@@suzan6254 Thanks for the answer. No doubt about the inferiority and the low chances of success. Anyway we use it ("again", as it has been removed at first and now been resumpted to the guidelines) in cases of a WATCHED cardiac arrest and the usage of an AED won't be delayed also. In that cases even medics do it. Prehospital and also inside. I think the realistic danger of making things worse than they are is low. Injuring other organs... which ones? There's nothing close besides the lungs which are protected by the ribs. And they will loosen from the sternum anyway when doing CPR... Don't get me wrong. I'm just wondering...

I'm surprised lifeguards don't have Nitro or at least chewable ASA on hand for situations like this... I mean, there was clearly a very strong indication this could be a STEMI and having those basic medications could help the patient a great deal..

@Danno0618
@Danno0618 10 лет назад
***** I'm not hating on the Bondi Lifeguards. He could have caused the patient to puke since the air is going into both the lungs and the stomach. Then the patient could have had an obstructed airway after he puked. I'm a first aider, I provide first aid services and I train regularly in first aid. I'm not a professional, but I've trained in using the BVM , and have had professionals teach me how and how not to use it.
@sexe5k
@sexe5k 10 лет назад
Danno0618 I don't think that's possible; the airway and oesophagus cannot be open simultaneously. His airways would be either closed while the oesophagus is open, or visa versa.
@Danno0618
@Danno0618 10 лет назад
sueper dooper Not when you're clinically dead.. I don't think the brain can function while you're in cardiac arrest.
@Danno0618
@Danno0618 10 лет назад
***** When we breathe knowingly, our brain can control which to open and which to close. When we are being given breaths by the BVM, the brain cant control which to open and which to close. You cant breathe on your own when your lungs and heart have stopped working. Air can enter the stomach when you squeeze the BVM too hard (gastric insufflation). You can also end up damaging the lungs by squeezing in too much air.
@josephbanks9201
@josephbanks9201 10 лет назад
sueper dooper It can happen. It's a key part of Rescue Breathing. You can overflate the lungs and the rest of the air starts to fill into the stomach, causing puking.
