Blake is wise and mature beyond his years. I am amazed at how smoothly he handles difficult people. His matter of fact attitude manages to somehow not be abrasive or intrusive. His innocence is charming and disarming in a very perfect blend. He takes ribbing for his religion, but if he is the product of his religion we could all use a dose. Let’s hear it for Blake!

Reidy, you did everything right. This was not your fault. You have an obligation to everyone on the beach and had no way of knowing how quickly he would go under. _You_ noticed a man, barely visible, struggling for help. _You_ rang the alarms and called for help, even if you were unsure if there was actually a distressed swimmer. Even when people repeatedly asked if you were sure, you insisted. _You_ were pivotal to the recovery of Dr. Dungu’s body. At times, the tragedy of death is compounded by the family never receiving the closure that comes with laying a loved one to rest. You and your crew made sure the Dungu family had that closure. You did everything right.

This was indeed a tragedy, and my sympathies go out to the family, But I want to say, I absolutely LOVE how, afterward, the lifeguards were told that it was okay not to be okay. That it was okay if they were affected by this. And that there was help available if they needed it. I love that they were encouraged to take care of themselves, and take that help if they needed to. I wish, so much, we had this wonderful attitude toward mental health here in the States. We might lose a lot fewer first responders, in particular...

I find my adrenaline rising when I see people going in the crashing surf...not knowing how to swim...I've even gotten into shouting match w parents who are yards & yards always & their kids are bouncing up & down in the waves...getting deeper & deeper w ea bounce...I think I've rescued more children as a visitor to the beach than I did when I was a lifeguard...🏊‍♀️

They get sold the beautiful calm beaches and are not really shown any safety videos or anything before they go overseas. Many have said on the show "Australian beaches are different). Which is true a lot of our ocean is directly linked to strong tidal movements compared to a lot of the world. I had an American girlfriend when I was about 20, she was 26 and a strong swimmer (did swimming in highschool and college). I took her to my loc surf beach (collengatta) NSW north coast. Within 5 mins of us swimming she was being bashed around and couldn't even stand up in surf. She had never been in sea like it before and she got very scared and asked if we could go to somewhere with flat water. And I didn't take her out deep only upto just above our hips. When you grow up around the beach you learn to move with the motion to stay upright and it feel strange seeing people not being able to even stand up in even small surf. I took her around to the spit on the flat side and we had a great day and she said "this is more what I am use to with the ocean calm bays and inlets not open ocean surf you guys are crazy". And Bondi is a much more dangerous beach then collengatta, I've been there and it's cold, strong currents most of the time and backpacker rip is one of the worst I've seen bar a big storm surge up this way. I get what you are saying but they are sold this beautiful calm beaches to swim and when they arrive it's rough as and huge sweeping current. Can be scary and take you by suprise. Even some of my mates who are Aussie and not good swimmers has trouble at Bondi. They got themselves out of it but they were huffing and puffing when they got back to shore. So cut em some slack they just wanted a swim and it went horribly wrong. Could happen to anyone but unfortunately not being able to swim it's probably best you stay close to shore. Jeez I do and in a seasoned beach swimmer. Don't like going out too deep.

I work for the United States Coast Guard, at a surf station on a pretty nasty river bar. Recently, I was on a search and rescue case where we lost 2 people to the water. Boat capsized to some occasional break and we just couldn't get them in time. This whole time watching this, I just thought of how familiar both events were. The sinking feeling, the guilt, the failed resuscitation. I'll never forget the rescue swimmer taking one look at that drowned 7 year old girl and shaking his head at me. Good on these guys for saving all these people, fucking legends mate.

I consider Lifeguards as first responders. I was a nurse, I wore blue, Police wear blue, Ambos wear blue & Lifeguards wear blue. It's a huge community that aim for the same thing. To save lives. There is no weakness in feeling any emotion after the death of someone you are there to protect. I remember my first death in the Health Care System. It will never leave me. I was a young nurse of less than a year into my career. You guys & girls are a Team, you MUST stick together when these hard times hit you. That also is part of the job. If you have a good team, you have support from each other. I hope after all these years, the mans family have found some peace in their lives. Thank you for this very important episode.

You're so right. All bodies of water are dangerous, though. :( I grew up surrounded by lakes and even we have a handful of drownings every year. (We had 3 just this past long-weekend) but oceans are definitely tenfold. Even with knowing how to swim, the ocean has tossed me around before. I was never at a point where I was scared for my life or felt like I was drowning, but I can 100% see how it is a force to be reckoned with.

All the lifeguards' expressions when they heard over the radio that not only did the family relocate to Australia just one week prior, but the dad can't swim...and it was his birthday that day...I could see the dread on their faces. The heart sinking look that they know he most likely won't be found alive was evident to me, in their eyes.Tragic indeed. You folks at Bondi Beach do fantastic work keeping people and critters safe..and hope all involved got the help they needed to deal with this tragedy. Family AND rescuers. To the lifeguards...you did all you could. Truth is, someone who cannot swim should not be out past their knees. A lot can happen even in knee deep waters. Sharks can and have attacked in 3 feet of water, folks. Read up on a place you are going! Looking for hours gives credit to all you lifeguards who persisted in looking. Reidy...always trust your gut. I just wish people who really cannot swim at all would keep their butts in knee deep water only. Surf is strong and can sweep you off your feet even in knee high water. Going out to fully submerge yourself depth is foolish. I do know many don't intend to go out very far, and get swept out, but from what I've watched, usually those who do push the envelope and knowing they can't swim, still go all the way 'where I can stand'..and don't realize it takes a millisecond to go from I can stand, to I'm drowning. I don't understand how anyone that lives right near an ocean or large body of water, never bothers to learn to swim...and still goes in the water.

You gave that man all you could in order for him to survive but it's also up to him. When I was giving my mum CPR, I gave her everything I could for her to fight back but sadly sometimes people just don't have the fight within to return to us. I'm glad you found him so his family can at least have peace knowing his not missing, can give him a funeral, and not suffer in grief wondering what happened to him.

I'm so glad that BondiRescue made these videos. I've been amazed at the mixture of clueless, jet-lagged, out-of-shape, sometimes inebriated people, and people who don't know how to swim, who get into trouble in the ocean here. Multiple languages must make the difficult situation much worse for rescuers. I hope that people all over the world will see these videos - with subtitles in their own languages. They might save even more lives on Bondi Beach, and on beaches the world 'round.

I feel like the "people splash, scream, make noise" is still a big misconception about people drowning. The opposite is true - many people do just go under and that's it, they're gone. Can't splash or scream with lungs full of water.

Even with the fun banter between the lifeguards but the message of swim safety is the core of Bondi Rescue. Not saying everyone needs to be an expert swimmer but understanding the power of the ocean and safe places to swim will always be key take away from this show. The tragedy is no joke and I hope his family finds peace because of the day and circumstance. But you can see how seriously they take their job and you also have to respect that.

debriefing with your coworkers after something like this is ESSENTIAL. Emotions are raw and need to be expressed. As a frontline healthcare worker, I deal with death everyday but there are times when a death is so horrific you NEED a debriefing with your coworkers afterwards. I think it is to acknowledge that it was horrific, to acknowledge we tried our very best and help each other reenforce our own capabilities but there are always extenuating circumstances beyond our control, that yes, as a team of professional healthcare workers, nothing else could be done. It is tragic, heartbreaking and makes you doubt yourself. The debriefing helps you realize that we, as a team, feel it. We all feel the doubt, the horror, the loss. It has to be acknowledged. When it is, you can move forward.

These are some of the most dedicated life guards I've ever seen. Hopefully they realize that there is only so much they can do. They go above and beyond as it is but when it's your time to go, there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. As hard as you try you can't always have the out come you strive for. Unfortunately you can't save them all. All they can do is go on and keep doing the awesome job they do every day. You'll never forget the ones you couldn't save but you will go on to save many many more and that is the most important part of the job. You are all amazing people who do a job not many can do. All the best to you all and I hope you all have long and fulfilling lives. My condolences go out to the family of the man who drowned.

Growing up in Australia we were always taught to both respect and fear the ocean and most of us that grew up anywhere near the coast were taught not only how to swim but about how to stay safe at the beach. I really wish more tourists were aware of the precautions you have to take while in our surf to avoid tragedies like this. They don't know any better but there really needs to be easier ways to educate them than using someones death as a lesson, however valuable that lesson is.

Your heart breaks, first for the family, and then for the team - especially To and Reidy who both were sure of what they had seen. They must have been second guessing their actions for ages after, wondering if they did this sooner, or said that instead of this. At the end of the day they committed as man resources to searching at the time as they could, without a confirmed missing person there's no way they could have gotten a heli out. Poor buggers. Bless the family for being willing to allow their personal tragedy to be used to educate the public, I'm sure the stark warnings of this episode made some people more beach savvy, and saved lives as a result.
