Bonds Explained Simply | Presentation and Q&A with Michael Lebowitz

The risk/reward on certain bonds, like US Treasurys, is starting to look better than it has for a long time.
They're finally paying a meaningful yield.
And there are potential upside triggers that could move prices notably higher in 2023.
But most folks don't feel they understand bonds well enough to invest directly in them.
To address that, financial advisor Michael Lebowitz offered a layman's review of bond fundamentals this morning and then took Q&A from the audience.

This is the best explanation I’ve ever heard. Passed finance classes and CPCU tests without true understating. It all comes together now.

@@SS-ob5nf actually, I went to the number one entrepreneurship school in the country. Got a fantastic education and make a very good living. However, bonds have never been “easy” to fully grasp (for me) The presentation in very easy lay terms was fantastic and was a missing overall piece for me. Also, it was nice when Michael went over the possible downside and upside of buying long bonds. Wonderful job overall. Hope to see more videos like this in the future.

You are absolutely correct. I look with a skeptical eye on advisors who did not live through the period around 1980. I had a 12.5% mortgage and I knew people with over 18% mortgages (ARMS). At the grocery store you saw generic label food as far as you could see. Black lettering on a white label. Beans, cigarettes, soup, you name it. I never thought we'd see home loans below 10%. The mortgage rates that people are whining about today seem like an incredible bargain to me. And the so-called 2008 "great recession" seemed very minimal compared to the late 70s malaise. Maybe due to change in the way the numbers are calculated? Who knows what the fed will do, but it seems unlikely they'll be able to follow through with the necessary tightening. The screaming will become unbearable. But let's face it. The real life inflation rate is about 17% and with the Taylor rule rates would need to be about 2% more than that to squash inflation. Seems unlikely that we'll make it to that point.
@karenreddy
@karenreddy Год назад
Part of the risk as well is inflation - yields. If inflation stays high and yields don't change, you're losing $ when waiting. Love this type of deep dive, keep them coming!

I love Mr. Leobowitz honesty. He admitted (as many of us should) that trading stocks and bonds during a high inflation environment is new to all of us (or at least those 60 and under)! Thank you sir! That has been a big component missing in all these financial conversations. The amount of inflation we are all experiencing is at 40 year highs.

This was a great presentation. My one comment is the treasury bond ETF’s like TLT and EDV already reflect the anticipated interest rate hikes in 2022 and 2023. The current price of a long term bond does not bake in these anticipated Fed rate hikes.

As for other future programs, not sure if it's really specific to your channel theme, but would be very interested to see you interview some great technical traders - like in the Market Wizards books. Bravo as usual for a calm, well balanced discussion about the current theme topic BONDS! This time, an accurate fundamental explanation about the inherent risks (interest/default) of ALL bonds (Treasuries, Corporate, Municipal). My question is...how can The Fed sustain 3.9% interest payments on reserves when the US Central Bank is technically insolvent? Is this the Black Swan that nobody currently sees including RIA? Printing base currency to cover independent agency operational payroll is not addressed in the Federal Reserve Act. Does the Federal Reserve Act need to be amended for these unconstitutional expenditures? I believe RIA'S US "Flight to Safety Textbook " might also need to be amended? Yes beyond simple, the but might be a serious real focus of another interview? How does a bankrupt buyer of last resort get capitalized? I opine it's Member Banks buy more shares?

One man's opinion on ipos. That is a game rigged for the insiders. If the shares were really worth buying the institutional and favored customers would get first crack at them. The only thing left for retailers are worthless scraps Stay away. If the company is any good watch how it does for a while before getting in

I don't know if you mentioned Etf funds such as TLT don't mature they keep rolling over so you don't get your full principal back. If the price goes down you can't wait to maturity to get your full principal back if you need to sell you have to sell at a loss.

I just watched this today, 10/26/23....roughly 11 months after video was recorded. If you had purchased a 10, 20, or 30 year back on 10/26/22 thinking rates would drop, you would be down roughly 5.9%, 9.7%, and 12.5% on each today. This is WITHOUT coupon payment, this is strictly the price based on interest rate risk that was discussed in video. Kinda interesting to see what has happened over the past year.
