Bongo Rock is about three bongo beats from the Incredible Bongo Band. Each beat has some of the more common bongo rhythm elements and can be used on a lot of different songs.

What a great video, my friend! I am especially impressed with your knowledge of this album and its roots in hip hop. As a kid growing up in NY, I cannot tell you how many times I saw Grandmaster Flash, and many other hip hop legends, play around the city. I have been fortunate that these are people who I still call friends. The first time I heard Apache was when I saw Flash using it in a battle against the Disco Twins at the Queensbridge community center... A battle's conclusion, I should add, which remains highly debated to this day! Man, that must have been around 1976, or so. Hip hop and all of the wonderful beats was what led to my career in hip hop and my first album recording in LA many years later. Later in life, I leaned into my Hispanic roots and followed in my Pop's footsteps. My father played with many Latin and Hispanic greats....Guys like Tito Puente and Cal Tjader. Of course, as a youngster it was all about Hip hop, but as an adult, and thankfully, before my Pop passed away, I found a love and passion for my island music, which remains with me to this day. I have about 8 copies of he Michale Viner album in my home today... Two, which I still use to cut up on the turntables...Two, which are used just for playing, and Two which will remain mint and unplayed! But, I also have about a half-dozen bootleg copies too! Wow, what a great video, my friend....Thank you so very much for taking an old man on a trip down Memory Lane!

Wow! What a story. That’s amazing. I owe my attention to hip hop to my older brother. He turned me on to Tribe early on and I still remember in 7th grade getting excited about the release of Snoop Dog’s first solo album. I guess that gives you an idea of my age. I’m also a history buff and love hearing real stories from people who were there. Much appreciated. And BTW, what did your dad play?

@@RhythmNotes Your brother led you down a terrific path, my friend! Yes, I suppose that I have had a pretty full life in music. I didn't hit where I was aiming, but I got pretty close and I got to meet so many people and I made so many friends along the way. I owe my father a lot too...In the early '70s, I grew up listening to Salsa, jazz and Africano tribal music in my home almost every weekend. We're Puerto Ricans, so growing up with music 24-7 was pretty common back then. My mom complained quite a bit, but I loved it. In fact, I loved it so much that I eventually circled back to this great music when I got older. My father played several instruments. Like Cal, he played the marimba (his main instrument) but he also played timbales, bongos and congas; and he played them well. He also dabbled in piano because he idolized Eddie Palmieri. My Pop and Cal were also pretty good friends... Some years ago I met Tito Puente in Los Angeles and we got to talking a bit. I told him that my pop played with him on more than a few occasions in the Poconos. Back in those days, the Pocono circuit was huge for Hispanic players. Desi Arnaz made our island music extremely popular in the states through his TV show and live club performances, so there was a high demand. Tito Puente and his orchestra went through quite a few players, so I was happy that he remembered my father well. He invited me to his show later that night and that's where I met his son backstage. Jr. was playing fusion back then, but like me, he eventually embraced his father's music fully. Jr. has since become a successful successor to his father legacy. He has also gone on to recreate some of his father's most famous songs....It's simply a joy! Thanks for your interest, my friend! I love telling these stories!

Preston Epps, for sure. ... I read that he once played for Maya Angelou. When she visited the University of North Texas in 2004, I played bongo next to her on stage while some recited one of her poems. I haven't thought about that in a long time. ... Thanks for reminding me about Preston Epps.

Now this is what I want out of bongo. A nice portable acoustic way to jam to regular music and just skipping all the Afro-Cuban stuff. Love the style but not interested in playing it and not practical anywhere I live. Using the big drum for the kick stuff and the smaller drum for the snare stuff has always been my go to as well.

Thanks for sharing so candidly. ... I will probably do more videos about applying bongo to American pop music in the future, so feel free to suggest any topics you'd like.

@@RhythmNotes hard rock and blues rock. Or just a little more expansion into the rock beats for beginners. Oh also more of those big drum as the kick smaller bongo side as the snare kind of beats would be nice. That's been how I've been trying to adapt it to regular music.

These are good for solo jamming, especially the first 2. I really like the "drum kit" style you were talking about can you do more of those? Also interestingly the Habanera pattern is basically a 1 sided paradiddle with an extra note. People enjoyed it while I was practicing at the bus stop.

That’s awesome! … nothing more important than enjoying music. … I’ll try to work in some more drum set adaptations to bongo.
