Hi - percussionist and composer here. Thanks for this video! I needed something to refer to when adding a conga part to an arrangement of Smooth Criminal I am working on for Percussion Ensemble. While I didn't use any of your patterns note-for-note, it gave me a much better idea of what could be written and how an actual player would interpret the part to "color" their performance more authentically. Thank you this presentation. It's very instructional as always 👌I would like to know if the use of carefully regulated microphones to pick up the sound from congas is reasonable because the palms do not have to be used strainously especially during long play. In Nigeria 🇳🇬 the congas usually have very thick membranes which cause a lot of pain even when played for a short period of time. My palms would swell though I treat them by dipping in warm water over and over 🙂
Hey I don’t ever remember to say thanks. I found this particularly useful. The funk/rock tumbao is a great pattern and going straight to the slap (4th stroke second bar) after the heal breaks through the heal/toe habit one naturally develops as a beginner with a fairly good standard tumbao. I couldn’t get it for about two hours, then it just happened (like it does). Looking forward to cleaning it up now - great pattern thanks a lot! 🙏 ❤🪘
