The modern drum set is still an ever evolving collection of percussion instruments where few, if any, rules exist. Integrating hand percussion into the drum set can be a fun way to add some fresh sounds and draw new inspiration. One of the most cost effective ways to do that is to set up a pair of bongos with your drums. In this episode we’ll cover placement/mounting, various forms of performance with sticks/mallets/broomsticks/hands, important things to watch out for, and more!

I used to do this. I set the bongos up to the left of my hi hat. Alice In Chains' drummer used bongos on the kit on the song NO EXCUSES, and you can see him doing it on the MTV UNPLUGGED show they did.

A few thoughts on this from a percussionist: 1. Plastic replacement heads for real bongo's (like those in your vid) are actually way more expensive then rawhide heads (Remo Nuskin for instance). However: plastic heads are more durable and allow you to tune your bongo's really, really high, almost without risk of tearing the head in two (which is a common problem with rawhide heads for bongo's, partly due to their sensitivity to humidity). Replacement heads for drumset-bongo's (with the same kind of tuning lugs that you find on a drum set) are at a normal price point. 2. There are drumset bongo's with elevated hoops that protect the bearing edge. I have a vintage set from Premier with diecast hoops, they take rimshots very wel. Standard 6 inch and 8 inch heads fit. 3. Another very common place for bongo's is above ore next to the hi hat. Basically where you would place octobans.

Martin, thanks for all the great information in your reply. One of my first thoughts when watching this video was whether or not plastic (mylar) or regular tom calfskin heads were available as a replacement and how would they sound.
@martinbladelvan1949
@martinbladelvan1949 2 года назад
@@Wyrdbard Hi Wyrdbard, mylar heads for bongo's are available for al the well known percussion brands like Meinl, Pearl and LP. There is, however, no guarantee that a mylar head for a specific model from LP wil fit on, for instance, a different model from LP or on bongo's from one of the other brands. This is because, other than for drumset, manufacturers of percussion like conga's and bongo's, never standardised the diameters of their drums. To me, mylar sounds a bit harsh in comparison to real skin (mostly goat or waterbuffalo) but real skin is very sensitive to air moisture which makes them vulnerable when under high tension.

Not mentioned: Rawhide heads need to be loosened after each use and re-tuned for the next… synthetic heads do not

Well, those bongos are high quality, made by Akbar Moghaddam. That is his personal brand - Sol Percussion. I'm a bongo player for 49 years. PLEASE DO NOT USE WOODEN BONGOS ON A STAND OR WITH STICKS! And I would not use sticks on real skins. You can always get a fiberglass set of bongos and mount some Remo synthetic heads that are made to simulate skin heads. Sticks on a wood bongo will irreparably damage the bearing edge. Skins last forever but not used with sticks. Most mass producers have fiberglass bongos offerings. Also, there is an artisan in Argentina who makes fiberglass percussion instruments named Emiliano Figge. His brand is called Late - pronounced like latte - as in the drink. His prices are very reasonable compared to what you can get locally, and his work is outstanding. All custom. Hope this helps.

Chris Dave flavor! Definitely a fun setup, I had to do a little experimenting with different stands to get them where I wanted but once I worked it out it’s a blast. It’s funny how everything old is new again - this wouldn’t be unusual to see in the 50’s, and now here we are making it cool again. Love it.

I was in a trippy live dub band (like De Facto) where I ran a delay unit on my snare drum so I set up bongos in front of my snare and it gave me really awesome melodic 'pops' to my delay

Again a spot-on video! When I was a kiddo and later as a student I used to have my trusty bongos integrated in my kit! Then I replaced them with congas and timbales.

I have been using Bongos for years and I along with others have loved it. I have a boom stand for a 6" and a 8" toms and I removed the toms and used the the tom mounts and attached them to the Bongos. I have placed them over the Hi Hats, to the left of the Hi Hats and also above my rack toms. With the boom stand you can place them almost any where around the Kit. The only down side is I have gone through a couple of pairs of skins. Mostly because I play them with sticks. BUT It has been a whole lot of playing them.. Thanks Guys great content as usual

Thank you for reminding me to order to skins and to take care of them! Set of skins is half the cost of a new set still, which is crazy, and why I shelved them for so long....look forward to getting these back in action now!

25 years ago I bought a set of Toca Player fibreglass Bongos that came with a heavy chrome Gibralter stand. I place them between the hi hat and the bass drum and the mounted tom. I tune the Bongos to E for the small and G for the large. Then I tune the 10in mounted tom to D and the 14in floor tom to C. That provides quite a contrast when playing "around the horn" Our Jazz trio does a lot of Paul Desmond Bossa and Samba numbers so I use Vic Firth 5 A mallet/stick combo. With my right hand I do variations of a Samba on the Bongos and a Bossa on a Jam block with my left hand.. in both cases using the mallets. The crowd always reacts to the sound of and Latin rhythms on them. And when I do my break on Take Five I incorporate the Bongos which add a whole different perspective. I have tried setting them to the left of the hat but much prefer them as an integral part of the overall kit. And i'm 83 so when I started drums pre Rock, Latin was common in music in Big Band, Jazz and Pop music so I had to learn it. And of course the use of Brushes was a must. Much different now. I just did back to back Jazz gigs past Fri and Sat and Bongos were a crowd pleaser. Also it's now becoming more and more common for Rock and Blues bands to add Congas as the ostinato rhythms they produce really fill out the music.

One of the first add-ons I bought for my first drum kit was a set of bongos. Saw Dave Weckl playing them on his kit, and I was also huge into Neil Pearts playing and found the bongos were a great way to emulate small concert toms. bought an entry level toca set for $50 and they last thru years of being hit hard with sticks no problem. Funny enough the heads didn’t give out until I put them in storage and they dried out and cracked. Keep meaning to getting to replacing the heads, now 10 years later haha

I've been using bongoes for quite a long time depending what kind of gig I had but since a couple years I replace them by a brasilian tambourim... it's smaller, takes less room on the drum set and gives me what I need for latin rythms. I'm quite happy with that but with bongoes you have more possibilities but... you can't have everything ! Thanks Cody for everything

Weird timing, I just started incorporating a set of bongos I had collecting dust into my set a few months ago! Also was really thinking about Billy Martin...and oddly, Stanton Moore, even though he doesn't use bongos. I have mine set up off to the left of my hi hats where he has his mini-tymps or whatever and all of his other percussion implements. Still trying to figure out if it's something that's gonna make it to a gig one day but it's fun to mess around with!

🤔 I wonder if these could be a snare replacement, being naturally so highly turned. Or, at least having them off to the left side of the hats, so a snare strike could move onto these?

Would there be any way to tune an 8" and 10" tom to sound like bongos? I feel like that'd be a real easy way to incorporate the sound without too drastic of a change or having to buy more equipment.

You’d want to go with ultra thick coated batter heads and no resos but even still, they might sound closer to timbalitos.

Yes you can with some drum changes or triggers but nothing gets the authentic bongo sound with or without sticks it's worth the investment and minimal struggle to do plus a fun bongo set to take anywhere you go for everything lol

Drumset con Bongos? I’d say that anyone interested in this combination-if they haven’t already-would get a good deal of inspiration from listening to Billy Martin on the Modeski, Martin & Wood album “Friday Afternoon In The Universe” (1995). He Really made the bongos fit well into the Group’s Sound & arrangement style, as well as integrating them into the kit along with bells and other things…he was really thoughtful about this and obviously worked at it as part of his background included work with heavyweight Brazilian cats in their NYC scene in the 80s. If you get sucked into the world of now classic Brazilian music (especially late 60s/70s stuff) as in Nana, Egberto, Arierto /Flora, and The Sorcerer himself, HERMETO, you’ll soon be declaring open season on every sound that there is lol! On top of that, Martin also worked a lot with Bob Moses back in the day…another ubercreative type. I digress in a blaze of passion as I advocate for putting Billy Martin right in there with Alex Acuña, Eric Harland, and Chris Dave when it comes to the subject of discussion here-Peace Out
