I knew Bobby Issac, he gave me his googles when I was 11 for my go kart racing. Still have them today. He was racing the number 6 at the time for Frank Hefner. Frank build my modified racing engine out Cherryville NC. We followed Bobby to tracks in NC and SC. He was my hero my whole life. Im 70 years old and that was the best time of my life.

Ironic that NASCAR didn't like the Superbird and Daytona because they weren't like street cars, even tho they actually were. Today if you took the MFG decals off the cars I don't think you could tell one from the other. Same goes for NHRA. When was the last time a Funny Car or Pro Stocker actually looked like the car they are supposed to be?

I wouldn't spend a dime to watch a NHRA event. Even NASCAR is starting to be boring. Races are broke down to three secments. If a person was watching a NASCAR race for the first time, they could not tell one make from another. I never thought i would lose interest in watching NASCAR races but, it's happing.

NHRA Pro Stock is an easy class to identify the cars in. If you know what a Camaro looks like you got P/S covered 100%. It may be the only time in history that a racing class that was intended for any and all U.S. auto brands to compete in has morphed into a spec series unintentionally.

An absolute gem of a story. These men did things that would never be accomplished today. They did things in spite of the danger, because of the danger, and it was just fun for them. Kudos to the writers, directors, production crew and most of all to the men who did these things! Also, Steve Lehto, you missed your calling. You should do more of this. Do you know the real reason that NASCAR outlawed the Dodge Daytona? Ford and Chevrolet didn't want to spend the money to compete with Chrysler, and they both threatened to pull out of NASCAR racing unless that car was removed. I still remember seeing a street legal version of that car on the track as the pace-car for the Daytona 500 one year, and thinking wouldn't it be funny if, instead of pulling off, the driver just pulled away from the pack and lapped them all. In pre-race testing, the pace-car did an average lap time that was almost 3 seconds faster than the number one qualifier.
@lorenreece1665
@lorenreece1665 5 лет назад
The Daytona was factory built for racing. Not for a family to enjoy as a car. That is why Nascar outlawed them. Ford and Chevrolet were built for the street and for family transpotration. Nascar did the only thing they could do..... outlaw them.
@davidwelsh829

Ford had their 427 axed by Nascar in the 60s because it was smoking everything else, outlawing the Daytona was just typical nascar.

Chevrolet didn't have factory teams at this time. Chevrolet(GM) already had 53% of the car market.

LOL. Didn''t want to spend the money? Ford not only fielded the Ford Torino Talledga and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler as direct competitors to the Daytona and Superbird in 1969 and '70, taking the title in '69 with Richard Petty at the wheel, they had already prototyped the 1971 Torino King Cobra (both Ford and Mercury versions) when NASCAR changed the rules. The real reason the aero cars were restricted out of existence was that NASCAR was scared of 200+ mph.
@CamaroAmx
@CamaroAmx 4 года назад
It was regulated out of competition, not banned. NASCAR added a restrictor plate to the hemis. And the forced the aero cars to run a 305ci engine, far smaller then the non-aero cars. There were several reasons why. Yes Ford and GM made a stink. But also there were concerns with the tires at the speeds the cars were achieving. The tire technology wasn’t up to snuff. Another issue was on short tracks, the winged cars sucked. On road courses and dirt tracks they were barely adequate. So teams had to have 2 different models of cars to run all the races. That made it expensive.

That's a pretty cool story, that I have never in my life heard of before. I guess I now have my explanation for why NASCAR got rid of the wing.

216 mph- still breathtaking- this is 1970’s technology- We have some “sport” car companies now only reaching that with modern technology.

There were alot of muscle cars back in the day that could do , 140 150,160 , you ought to be in a pickup doing 130 mph .

I remember watching the race where they cracked 200mph in the late 70s they had found a bunch of horsepower in the off season , ,Nascar was crapping their britches , it was great to watch , but the cars were barely able to handle that kind of speed.
