April 16th 2023 saw The UK Bonsai Association host the 4th Bonsai Expo, this time at the K2 Sports Centre in Crawley, West Sussex.
I was asked by the exhibition organiser Steve Hale to capture the event and create a video explaining a little what this particular exhibition is about.
My aim was not to just showcase the amazing trees on display. If you want to see them I urge you to attend the show. Instead I wanted to show why the individuals are putting in such a great effort to make it happen every year. So I asked a few people to share their experience of the event and edited it together in my own little way.
Hopefully this will give a taste of what has become the UK national bonsai exhibition and show to those who have yet to experience it.

This film was in my “suggested” list on RU-vid. Bonsai is something that has never been on my radar. I don’t know anything about it or know anyone who does. I’ve got a feeling that that is about to change. I’m absolutely blown away by the effort and skill that goes in to this. The art that the people in this film produce is mind blowing! I’m now going to spend an evening learning what I can about this craft. I’m absolutely inspired! As for the filming and production of this film… It’s incredible! This has literally made my day! Since I fell in love with bonsai 12 years ago I’ve bored anyone who was willing to listen about what I feel is such a fascinating art form. The thought of people with no understanding about bonsai discovering it through a video I put together makes me truly happy. Welcome to the wonderful world of trees in pots. It can be a rollercoaster, but rollercoasters are always exciting and fun.

Sounds like you have been zapped by "bonsai germs". Bonsai is not a craft or a hobby. It is a disease and, thankful, there is no cure. I caught it 40 years ago and I still enjoy it very much.

I hope that you will buy a little tree and take care of it. I got into this hobby a couple of years ago, when I was stricken by vertigo. I couldn't do near anything for the better part of a year, but I was able to develop my interest in bonsai with my girlfriend during that time. Now we both have trees and sometimes prune them together. It's a very wholesome, spiritual hobby, that requires a high level of mastery and discipline to perfect. I wish you the most excellent luck. Keep with it!

そりゃそうよ。これらは「盆栽」なのだから。日本人が懇切丁寧に日本文化の粋である盆栽のスピリッツとエッセンスを伝授してきたその現れです。また、多くは日本から輸入したもので、多くを育て上げたのは日本人であり、日本人の作品です。盆栽は日本の輸出品なんですよ

I am Japanese. When I was a child, there were many houses with many bonsai trees in their gardens. However, in Japan, bonsai is a hobby for old people, and young people do not practice bonsai. Bonsai was an image of an old man's hobby. However, there are fewer houses with bonsai now. By chance, I saw this video and learned for the first time that there is such a wonderful bonsai outside of Japan. I also learned that the word bonsai is also used overseas. They are very beautiful bonsai even from the Japanese point of view.

The people outside Japan will always look to Japan as being the teachers. But it can also be more for older generations. Many of us try to change that. Bonsai in Great Britain is growing more and more popular thanks to social media allowing people who haven’t been exposed to it see the beauty in it.

@@DeanKellyBonsai I started as a toddler, living in multi-story flats with no gardens. I'd try and make moss gardens etc, not understanding why they rarely took on concrete! I've rediscovered it now I've got rheumatoid arthritis. I can't bend down to weed, but I can snip and wire. I've just managed to get a half promise from a pal to drive me to next years Expo. Yey

Great video. This was the first bonsai show that myself and my husband attended and we found it very interesting. I have been doing bonsai for about a year now. It gave us a good giggle that you got my husband in your video, he was the one on the scooter with the trailer, I can see that we will be attending many more bonsai shows in the years to come. What a special production this is. Well done Dean, I believe all of the UK Bonsai enthusiasts owe you a debt of gratitude for this wonderful video. It really captures the spirit and friendship I myself have witnessed in UK Bonsai and hopefully entices people to visit our shows and enjoy some incredible trees. The standard of trees this year was top draw and as always the organisation of these events is just so impressive. Love the venue, enough room to circulate vender stalls and exhibition displays with ease, well done to the whole team.
