We get so many people coming to us with a dead tree and 90% of the time, they think it's because they "overwatered" it. We've done watering videos before, but we wanted to do an educational video that shows what happens to the soil if you water it wrong and when you water it properly. Some of this information can be found in our in-person Bonsai For Beginners class.
We took clear deli meat boxes and drilled holes on the bottom and prepped the container as if it was a bonsai soil. This way you can visually see what happens to the soil inside the container. Watch how dry the soil is if you water the bonsai wrong in ways that we commonly encounter. Then watch again and see what happens with the soil when you water it properly.
Remember. YOU CANNOT OVER-WATER A BONSAI TREE if you have the proper soil and proper container.

would it work to block the drain holes, fill with water till its overflowing, then allow it to drain? and do this weekly maybe?

There is no reason to do these extra steps. Just water from the top down throughout the the soil and let it drain. If your soil never completely dries out, your tree will be fine.

Im no expert but I've read and heard many times that clear pots for any plant is a bad idea, because the roots shouldn't be buried and still getting light. Unless you did this just for the watering demonstration . I do use recycled food containers tho they work great for training pots.!

@@andrewdobosz3682 we definitely only used the clear containers for the visual. These cheap clear containers will also absolutely melt in the sun

@@AsiaPacificGardenyeah I probably should have watched more of the video before I commented that 😁 i do have good luck with the black plastic food containers . they get kind of brittle after about 2 years but by then they're ready for a "nicer" pot. I've never had one melt though. Usually ♻️#5 polypropylene ones are the best in my experience.

@@andrewdobosz3682 there are definitely plastic ones that are safe. Many of our training pots are plastic. But 1000% do not recommend the 5 cent clear ones we used in the video. Maybe we should have put a disclaimer that says "for demonstration purposes only".

Is it best to water with sprayer or would it be ok with water pitcher?

Anything that dispenses water will do the trick. As long as it's watered all the way thru thoroughly. The spray bottle just doubles as a misting tool for the leaves.
