In this lecture Michael shares his knowledge on moss, and its application on Bonsai trees. Ideally we collect moss from sunny spots, like roofs, old rail tracks, or even concrete slabs, because this moss will thrive on your bonsai. Try to collect clumping types of moss, that stay in place on the soil surface. To grow moss year round, it helps to put the moss on a bed of chopped sphagnum moss. By far best moss video for bonsai I've seen yet! Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I enjoyed your thoughts on the lichen as well. I've tried moss from my forest for a couple of years now and have struggled to get it to grow on my bonsai trees. I've combined it (grated) with sphagnum moss, and applied it as a top dressing in the spring. This is the first I've heard someone mention the challenge of moss from the forest. - Choten-en Bonsai

Unfortunately the moss intended for use in bonsai is not what grows down here in the super hot, humid, and sunny region of the southeastern USA. I live in North GA, the Atlanta area to be specific, and the moss down here tends to be crawling hypnum types of mosses. It's essentially like grass, but it's a moss. I've had some clumping style mosses shipped to me but they're hard to keep happy in the southeastern sunlight. They eventually adapt but it takes time, and can be a bit aggravating to keep healthy. I've gotten to that point where whatever grows naturally on the top of my soil is what I get.
