In this lecture Bjorn introduces the topic of repotting. He talks about the nuances that different tree species present, how soil breaks down over time, and why we often choose to repot in early spring. Depending on the vigor and age of a bonsai, we repot every 2-5 years on average, when the roots circle around the inside of the container. This video is a free preview lecture from our Bonsai Intermediate Course 3.
About the "Bonsai Intermediate Course 3"
In this course we explore the essential Repotting techniques, broken down by tree species. We also cover Root grafting, Accent plant creation, Moss, and preventing Pest & diseases. Your teachers are Michael Hagedorn and Bjorn Bjorholm.

Awesome video! I don't think a wooden chopstick is easier on the roots, a metal one will slide across the roots with less damage, while the rougher wooden one can actually grip the roots and tear them more easily. Try rubbing both on your skin, the metal one doesn't hurt, while the wooden one creates more friction.

Thanks for the suggestion Nigel, I'll pass it on to Bjorn!

Once the soil is dry it doesn't matter if the chopstick is metal or wooden. However, make sure the metal one is polished and rounded at the tip, or it might end up causing more harm than good.

i like using an aluminum chopstick that has a smooth, rounded point for repotting. i have a heavy steel one i use for yamadori hunting.

@@tomwoski you making it sound like you don't have to worry about a wooden chopstick inflicting any kind of damage no matter what condition it's in is wrong, too.

No no no. Bamboo chopsticks are optimal. Cheap, easily sourced, easily customizable, easily repurposed, and most importantly, you have tactile haptic feedback

Nice introductory video on basic bonsai repotting. I just repotted my big Red Sentinel Japanese Maple. Excited waiting for it to explode in spring growth! Next week will be my new Seigen, intial pruning, a few thread grafts, and potting up into a big training pot.🪴🍁

I've been using the same roll of drywall plastic mesh selfsticking repair tape as bonsai pot screens for years. 😊

Last year I repotted several trees in March, and lost them all because I did it too early.

Well it all depends on where you live and how you protect trees after repotting!

@@bonsaiempire I live 45 minutes outside Knoxville, TN 😁 Last spring was my first Spring attempting bonsai. Luckily the trees were locally found, or young and its more of a learning experience than a loss. Trial and error. The adult maples in my yard give me plenty of material to work with, from seed. I wasn't aware than a repotted bonsai would need any special protections; just wire the tree down, make sure there aren't any air pockets in the soil, and keep it watered.
