I don't feel like it needs another tree but rather a nice big bonsai stone or scholar stone that you'll often see in many traditional bonsai scapes along with some type of Japanese stone pagoda, bridge, tower, temple, statues, etc... That would really make this tank pop!

My dear fellow aquarists, I would like to point something out here. Mike did NOT copy Joey. If you look closely, they uploaded the same type of video on the same day, so there is *no way* that within only a few hours Mike had set this tank up and filmed the video. It takes time to aquascape a tank, and to film and edit a video adds even more time needed. Unless they collaborated and decided to do the same type of scape at the same time, it was probably a coincidence. Please be less judgmental guys, we all know that were better than this.

Not being judgemental but I’ve noticed... a lot of channels not just aquariums do the same thing quiet often... I know in the tech world they scan certain social media and tech social media for chat and what searched on analytics... I suspect the you tube aquarium channels do the same

You should have more air flow, moisture is important but the mold is growing because of the lack of air flow. put a small fan in there and youd get much better growth as well as less mold.

Why not just, when initially planting, cover all the ground cover with a couple of inches of water?? Wouldn't that take care of the mold??

I'm using akadama to redo my rack, but I'm adding crushed scoria as a base instead of soil. Scoria has a lot of minerals like the soil, but with less mess and it's great for growing beneficial bacteria in and great for plants. I ordered some bonsai to put all my anubias nana on.

Yay!!! Finally another video from one of my favorite RU-vidrs! Love the tank and scape - for what it's worth, I wouldn't put another bonsai on the left, too symmetrical, but you're right it does beg for something. Maybe a couple or three rocks, or a nice piece of driftwood - something lower than the tree, just to rest your eyes on without competing with the tree as a focal point. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with💕👍

I just started a planted tank using this vid as reference with a few changes, growing plants emersed. Using a 46 gallon acrylic bow front and 2 Finnex 24/7 LED hoods, might be a bit much lightg but we will see. I did have some fungus growth also, most noticeably on the akadama. I covered all the akadama with small aquarium gravel and sand, problem solved.

I would not recommend akadama, fungus clings to it. I have had to bury all the akadama with gravel and sand. Just go with gravel or something similar

I had the same problem growing monte carlo! The issue that allows the mold to happen is lack of airflow and too much moisture, when I tried fully wrapped tops it was a problem. Mold never shows up if I leave a gap in the cover at all times and only moistened the substrate each day with spraying (no saturation with water). But once mold starts happening, it's tough to get rid of it without filling the tank.

Love the setup, I really liked the coincidental timing of this upload and Joeys, it's really cool seeing two very different designs based around the idea of a bonsai tree tank. I loved the contrast between the lighter green of the glosso and the darker green of the anubias, so good! I like the idea of putting in the second bonsai but I also really like the sort of meadow effect of the glosso, I'd love to see if there were small red or yellow coloured plants of a similar size to kind of build up a flowering meadow look. Awesome build! :D

For all of those saying he copied Joey, wake up. Aquarium bonsai trees have been around for quite some time. Everyone one is copying Filipe Oliveira as he was the first aquascaper To ever create a tree in an aquarium. Two days before these two upload their videos I planted my newest aquascape using not one,not two but tree of these bonsai trees. Difference is a posted pictures instead of video. And I don't believe any of them copied me. When it comes to trees we are all copying Filipe as he invented the concept. Everyone is always copying someone or something for inspiration.
@dudewholikesdinosaurs-topi1727
Because Filipe did it first doesn’t mean anyone who did a bonsai tree aquarium copied him. That’s like we are copying the concept of writing.

This is a very cool approach to starting a planted tank. Curious as to your NPK nutrient ratio on the water you are adding while immersed. Also wondering if you considered adding a low amount of co2 during this process to enhance plant growth.

Good to see another upload from you and congratulations on your sub count - it has gone mad since I last checked it. You have to tell me your secret, lol God damn, there are some really silly comments on here and if people checked they would find videos of similar designs from years ago - so what? Not every viewer is subscribed to every aquarium channel - I've had ideas blatantly copied (with no reference to my videos given) and some of the copied videos have had millions of views on those channels but it's all good as long as the idea gets out there. 90% of the people viewing my idea on another channel would probably have never found my original video anyway. I'm sure that even some of the obscure stuff I come up with has been done before somewhere. Good work, man - keep it up.

You and Joey both uploading bonsai scapes at the same time just a coincidence or a sign that I should rethink the layout of my first soil substrate tank? I have been trying to get the wood for the 10 gal setup to sink for over a month now and it refuses to go down. I threw some hornwort in just for the heck of it while I wait and it is growing like mad, just a couple of small sprigs less than a month ago and it is already filling nearly half the tank. I also anchored a small piece of pennywort in the soil to see if I could grow it out and it is growing like mad as well, tripled in size in about two weeks. Once I dial it in to get rid of the green water issue, it looks like it will be a great environment for what ever plants I decide to go with. It was going to be a plant only tank (with trumpet and pond snails to eat dead leaves and such) but I will have to put some rasboras or something in before next spring thanks to mosquitoes breeding in the tank. Oops, I seem to have started rambling on here, lol. I guess it is time to go start planning out a new bonsai setup for the tank.

The mold is coming from the worm casting dirt. We get it bad in worm beds. You need to bake you soil at 300 degrees for like 2 hours to kills all the germs and molds in the casting. Hope this helps you. That is a very aggressive mold it kills and eats earth worms.

Hello, I am wondering why you chose the subrate cap that you chose. What did you look for that 'captures' the nutrients that are off-gassed by the layer beneath? Excuse my ignorance, but I have used clay in aquaponics for it's pH neutrality and relative inertness. The clay I am familiar with is sold expanded in spheres. Would a smaller, equally as irregular and porous clay cap provide the nutrient buffer capacity?

Black gold earthworm castings is blended with sphagnum moss. You must be having ph issues with this tank as the Sphagnum moss will make the PH low. That is why it is taking so much water to wet it down 4:08

I have to try a scape like this. It looks like it's going to be beautiful. A couple of questions: how many bubble per second are you running, and will you maintain that with the fish in it? Also, I thought a pump would cause your CO2 to gas off due to surface agitation. No?
