00:00 Eric demonstrates three different things you can do to take the next step to make a good bonsai from 2 year old Kishu Junipers.
00:36 An example of a tree Eric took from a 3 1/2" container, potted down into a mame pot, added shari work on the trunk to give it a twist and lifeline, and added wiring. This work can be risky to the health of the tree, but if you know when to do the work and how much to do, you can minimize the risk.
01:26 You can't wait too long to wire Kishu. He reviews the timing and style decisions for a two year old tree and explains that the size of the bends you put in the trunk effect the scale of the tree, which impacts how long it takes to develop into a bonsai. This is why he wires his Kishu at about a year, creating movement in the low part of the trunk.
03:10 Example #1 Making a Mame. Eric removes the tree from the container and brushes off the soil to look at the roots. To pot the tree down into a mame-sized pot, 3/4 - 7/8 of the root ball needs to be cut off.
03:59 Eric reviews a variety of mame containers to decide which size to use - as small as possible, of course.
05:42 After a rough trim of the rootball, removing 40-50%, Eric considers a first pot, ultimately deciding to go to a smaller container.
06:54 Eric's favorite bark stripping tool - he uses it to get a twist in the lifeline, to get some movement. (Link to purchase the tool: www.bonsaify.com/collections/...)
08:48 Shari on trunk twists all around - exactly what Eric hoped for!
10:10 Potting! Watch this tree move from it's original 3 1/2" container to a 1 1/2" mame pot.
11:15 Example #2 Making a Slightly Larger Tree. Eric needs to wire more of the growth.
11:59 Runners drive the wood production in the trunk, which is why Eric keeps the runners on and doesn't pinch the tips, to make a bigger tree.
12:34 One wire applied. Twist to create interesting movement and a twist in the lifeline.
14:08 Example #3 Making a Larger Tree. Eric removes the tree from its container to see the junction of the trunk and roots.
15:26 Wild junipers in the mountains all pretty much have jin and shari - so this work is really what creates the essence of the juniper in bonsai.
16:25 Eric creates a shari from the base of the trunk to the base of the green, newer growth. Learn how he chooses a side!
19:11 Why you should carve your shari past the base of the roots.
20:32 Wiring! "[The wired tree is] sort of like a ball of clay; that's the great thing." The technique Eric uses to bend and twist the wired trunk makes the lifeline move around to a full twist of the shari.
24:10 What is the best container to use to grow this juniper out? Are you surprised that it's a regular nursery can?
Which of these examples are you most excited to try? Let us know in the comments! We have 2 year old pre-wired kishu juniper starters for sale on the site: www.bonsaify.com/products/kis....

Nice that you said why you're doing something based on the weather. First video in the thousands I've watched that did so. Doesn't really help me know when I can chop and trim roots on all the 1-3 gallon deciduous nursery stock I have, but it's a start. Everything I see on YT contradicts everything else.
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 года назад
One reason for all the contradictions is that there are many right answers to various issues. (Well, I'm sure there are bad instructions out there as well...) But this cacophony is the reason many people find most success with bonsai by concentrating on a single teacher (in person in my experience.). Because what you do before, during and after, and at other times of year impacts success, it's difficult to digest and internalize all the aspects even for a single plant from a variety of sources...

I love these mame juniper's in your videos. I just ordered a mame pot and a small kishu today from Bonsaify to make my very own. All the raw material I currently have is meant for shohin and kifu sho so this will be an interesting first time experience. These videos inspired me to jump onto the mame train and see where it goes. Thanks for posting.

Hello Eric, your skill, your excellent ability to explain things and your videos are just great; thank you! I was hoping you may do a video on how to create a crown or rounded top on junipers, pines etc. I am able to easily work on straight apex but find it difficult to create a nice looking apex that is bent downwards resulting in a rounded top look. I hope I am explaining it right. i have not seen anyone on the internet specifically explain the technique. Thanks again for all of your great videos!

Very interesting and helpful guide, thanks. When doing the shari at the base, you cut out the bulge of the wire scar that was already mimicking the twist movement you were going for. Was that intentional in order to thin that bulge out to give the trunk better taper? Thanks.
@questionablecooking7019
@questionablecooking7019 2 года назад
sorry, my question was in regards to the first cutting your demo'd, thanks.
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 года назад
When creating shari on material that has already been wired AND twisted, I start at the bottom to make that location predictable. If you start at the top you'll not be able to choose the side at the bottom. - You cannot normally tell from the bark what the twist is, but when you start stripping the bark, the cambium layer will follow the previously created twist as you pull it off moving upward. That exposes the twist and increases the interest significantly. So eliminating a bulge is neither here nor there - the long term goal is to create a trunk that is not round, and that has more interesting character. Hope that makes sense!

Hey Eric, when creating shari junipers, is there a optimal depth to cut into the tree? Should one avoid going deeper than the cambium or is it ok to go further in?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 года назад
You just need to remove the cambium, otherwise it will not kill off that section. Whether you remove wood or not isn't really relevant to the shari creation. I've split young straight junipers that were too stiff to bend in half using a root splitter to see what would happen - they can continue living after this severe type of operation, and subsequent wiring and bending.

Hi Eric. I was curious about your soil mix. I've been using akadama, pumice, and lava on my cuttings. Do you get better results in young material with a perlite mix? When do you transition to a more "traditional" bonsai soil? I would love to see a video on different soil compositions and their uses. Great video's buddy!
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 года назад
I think APL is fine for seedlings. I find it's a bit slower for young pine growth, but the difference in junipers is not as distinct. I'd say 80% perlite/20% coco is faster for junipers also. However, im looking at some practical aspects - cost, weight and availability. Perlite is produced domestically and costs about 10% of what Akadama costs. Coco coir - I'm not sure where it's made but it's also cheap. Given that shipping from Asia has gone up 5x in the last year I think we should all be exploring options. I still use APL for older trees, but can't justify the cost (especially given not superior results) for younger material. As for transitions - Perlite doesn't break down over time, so it's just like pumice/lava, I don't really worry too much about the two mixing. But, once a tree reaches the stage where it goes into a bonsai pot, I think you could start to transition to APL.

I'm wondering why you used all akadama for this plant. I'm guessing it is because shohin gets repotted more often than larger bonsai?

Mr Eric what is the best soil for juniper and thank you for the tutorial.
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 года назад
"best" depends on what you are doing - growing or maintaining an old bonsai. My mix for young plants is 80% perlite and 20% coco coir, but Akadama:Pumice:Lava is better for older plants, because its heavier (less likely to wash away while watering) and doesn't contain organic matter that will break down over time (reducing the air penetration to the roots.). Especially for young plants, you can use many different mixes. For older ones, Akadama is a bit magical.

What kind of winter care do you need to give these after this kind of work? I live in southern Ontario, Zone 5b
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 года назад
You would be better off waiting for spring to be sure. At this time of the year in Zone 5b I think you're probably already too cold for root growth. However you could do bark stripping now, waiting on the root work until spring. I am not a cold weather expert (zone 10b here) so please consult people locally also. I'd say you'd want to keep these above 28F, or something like -2C to avoid root damage even on trees that are hardened for winter and not repotted.

I normally use "Aoki" shohin size mix for mame. It's 60% akadama, river sand and japanese pumice. (don't quote me on that.)

Is there any risk to perform shari when repotting and trimming roots at same time?

@dainang7726
@dainang7726 2 года назад
@@Bonsaify Is that true that juniper rely a lot on their foliage instead of their roots system in opposite of JBP for instance? I mean, do we need to keep as much as possible foliage when repotting to allow them to kick back and recover faster?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 года назад
Yes, in my experience junipers need healthy vigorous foliage, and they can't react to foliage loss quickly, so pinching and heavy cutting will slow things down. The fastest recovery after repotting would likely come from not trimming too much. (You might notice that I removed very little foliage in these examples!)

Is growing juniper in plastic pot better than terracotta pot?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 года назад
In our experience size is more important to the growth speed than the type of container. However the term "better" is a bit ambiguous. Junipers generally are not overly vigorous in terms of elongation - so larger containers are generally better for speeding along trunk and branch development. Terra cotta will work fine, as will plastic.

@@Bonsaify Heard that juniper thrive in lightly acidic soil is that right?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 года назад
Yes - but a pH of 5.5-6.5 (mildly acidic) is preferable for almost all plants. However keep in mind that the soil is only one component of the pH - your water pH has a big influence. City tap water in the US is normally 8.0-9.0 (mildly basic), so acidifying water helps with plant nutrient uptake. Citric acid is a simple way to acidify for a few plants...we did a video on that a few months ago.
