BONUS EPISODE: Lakers Draft Bronny James With the 55th Pick. Good Choice or a Waste?

The Lakers made some history on Thursday, selecting Bronny James with the 55th pick in the Draft. It was a move that surprised... well, nobody, but does set up the Lakers to have the first father/son combo on the floor in NBA history.
That's pretty cool! And a testament to LeBron's longevity in the league.
But was it a good pick?
In some ways, it's a weird argument. Bronny is an undersized 19-year old drafted largely for his defensive potential. He's a project. It could be a couple years before he would be expected to have any impact in the league. But that's true of most 55th picks, the vast majority of whom never make even a minor impact in the league. James was drafted in line with his pre-draft rankings, so it's not like the Lakers reached. So much of the discussion, then, is really about the Lakers and James Sr., and whether Bronny is being guided into a space that is ultimately not good for him.
And yes, there are downsides to being drafted by the Lakers for Bronny, starting with the nepotism-gone-wild charges that will follow him. He'll always be perceived by some as the guy who was drafted to keep his dad around/do his dad a favor. It's up to him to show that's not fair, and it won't be easy. On the other hand, he won't find an organization more dedicated to his development than the Lakers. He will have time and support, probably more than the average 55th pick would get. That's helpful.
And yeah, if it reduces the chances of LeBron walking to basically zero, that's good for the Lakers.
All of that said, Rob Pelinka made a big unforced error meeting the media on Thursday, in how he talked about father, son, and the moment at hand.

I don't know why Brian and I have both gotten it into our heads that Knecht is "Dillon" rather than "Dalton," but it's obviously a habit we need to correct. (Or he needs to change his name, but I'm not counting on it.) Please do call us out whenever we make this mistake. AK

I’m not a hater for stating facts. This organization chose to make a player happy rather than the team better. Knecht was a great pick, but to waste a pick on bronny to make a 40 yr old player happy was inane. As soon as LaBron is gone so will bronny be. He will be out of the league immediately. A good dad would have encouraged someone who doesn’t need the money stay in college and get better. LaBron never does what is best for anyone but LaBron. Even when we saw the draft room, it was obvious that the suits weren’t happy with it and were just appeasing LaBron. “He was drafted for his athleticism and defense” 😂 wrong………

I'm out on this team, this is what happens when you have the kids of the original owner who actually knew how to run a team take over. The team is run by kids who are examples of nepotism, so of course they're going to commit the biggest example of nepotism in sports history. It a joke what is it 10 coach and 12 years they can't figure anything out and now they're held hostage by LeBron James who's old and doesn't play defense anymore good luck with that😢

I wish Bronny had stayed in college and further developed his game, as well as himself as a person. However, in so far as LeBron wanted to play with his son, the best for all concerned -- Bronny, LeBron and the Lakers -- is to trot out Bronny in a preseason game, giving son and dad the opportunity to get some burn together. Afterwards the Lakers should hide Bronny in the G League. That way, you squelch all the hoopla and charges of nepotism that would surely characterize his season. And more importantly, it would provide Bronny the avenue to develop his game, perhaps validating his second-round selection.

I'm sorry but there is no way in hell that Kobe would've done all this if he had a son. If you knew Kobe, he was one of the most competitive players in league history. He would not have allowed his son to make demands like no 2-way contracts. And quite frankly, Kobe would've preferred his son to play for another team so he could beat him lol He was that competitive. As for Lebron, he did what alot of dads would do, and that's fine. I just don't appreciate how he said at the beginning of this process that where Bronny ended up wouldn't affect his free agency decision when that clearly was not the case. If that were true, Rich Paul wouldn't have been calling other teams and making threats to play in Australia if they drafted Bronny. And for Bronny, he talked about how he didn't want special treatment because of who his father is, but that's exactly what he got. I've never heard of a prospect that averaged less than 5 points in college turning down workouts from interested teams, telling teams that he would not accept a 2-way contract, and ultimately telling every team but the Lakers not to draft him. Call me crazy, but that's the textbook definition of special treatment. And lastly, the Lakers, who used to be a franchise that no one player was bigger than (not even Kobe). And now they're bending over backwards to draft a prospect that's 2 years away from being 2 years away when they've been preaching all offseason how the goal was to contend now. There were still players on the board at 55 that fit our positions of need, but instead we drafted yet another undersized guard to appease Kultch Sports.
@LockedOnLakers
@LockedOnLakers 3 месяца назад
That's all fine, but we never said that Kobe would have demanded/wanted the Lakers to draft his theoretical son. Just that they would have used the 55th pick on his son, no questions asked, if requested. I'm 100 percent sure of this. Appreciate you watching. AK
@JB-sc1tg
@JB-sc1tg 3 месяца назад
@LockedOnLakers Sure. I believe 1000% Rob would've drafted Kobe's dog if he requested it. So in that regard, I agree. The organization would've done anything for Kobe. My point was that Kobe would not have requested that. Whereas Lebron implied he wouldn't make such a request at the beginning of the process. But his actions and the actions of Rich Paul say otherwise. I'm not saying that Bronny can't eventually be good. But for a prospect who played so poorly in college, he was granted more privilege than players who had better resumes.

One game they hit back to back home runs. In another Jr. caught a ball meant for his dad. I'm not talking about LeBron's involvement in the athletic careers of Bryce or Zhuri (who is a budding volleyball star), which are completely separate from the team I cover for a living. This is all to continue to placate one ego. How is this not forcing this on his son when klutch had espn telling every team not to draft him or else. What if some other team wanted to legit take a chance on him and develop him and not allowed that opportunity. Robbed a kid a chance to build his own road. Bringing up kobe is ridiculous. For what? To excuse this?

OK its time for Jeanie to fire Rob Pelinka, than walk down the hall and wake up Kurt Rambis from his daily nap and fire him. Then go to her office and tell Linda Rambis to get out of her seat and let her know she's fired. Trade Lebron for anything and then sale the Lakers to save her dad's legacy. That would be a historic day for all of us Laker fans. Finally Jeanie and Linda can go out for drinks and celebrate a job well done and flirt with all the 20 somethings. Laker fan since 1965 very sad all time Laker Low Moment.

The LA Glazers ....shaking g my head. This just proves the power and control that LB and clutch sport have over the Lakers. It's a true conflict of interest. You have a myriad of top players singed to. Clutch, so if you have hopes of landing one of them, then you better keep a good relationship with Bron. So all this lb saying I'm not involved with laker coaching decisions and player movements movements is BS. This is clear evidence of LBs power and the Lakers' appeasement.
