the thing about abuse is that if you can't cope with the pain of your abuse by truly improving yourself and moving on, the easiest and quickest fix for your pain is to pretend everything is okay and try to forgive your abuser. i think that's why donnie returned to his abuser in the end, because he never really dealt with the shame of his s*xual abuse

This popped up randomly on my home page and I watched the whole thing! The way you do reviews is amazing and you deserve more recognition on here! I binged watched the whole series after watching your video. You do a fantastic job at intriguing the viewer without revealing too much about the source material!

I have to admit, I usually try to make more jokes with my reviews, but I just couldn't with this one. I had to approach it seriously. Thank you so much for your comment!

Letterbox review: (i wanna know if anyone feels the same) I rewatched this twice. I was so immersed. I could relate to the main character in a way I've never felt before. It's those feelings you can't quite put into words but are so human it hurts. The male experience and variability are needed more within the film space. I haven't heard a lot of stories of male exploitation other than Terry Crews. He is my reindeer; something you don't see often but when you do, it connects you with nature and the world. You know millions of people have done and felt the same way you do but to see it fully formed. Beginning to end. You know it's human... you finally know... I've been through that same trauma and self-destructive behavior. This isnt a story of redemption but of real destruction that so many victims go through. You're conditioned to only need and want that one thing. Even if you self aware, you can't stop the cycle

Thank you for this and your vulnerability. You're absolutely right, I wonder if so many people were uncomfortable because we just aren't used to seeing the experience of the abused male.

Thank you for reviewing this and treating it with sensitivity. I was thinking about signing up for Netflix to watch, but maybe not yet. I think it's maybe a little too much for me to handle at the moment. The trauma experienced and feeling complicit in it are themes that I don't have the bandwidth to sit with and deal with yet. I'm so glad that you pointed out that that people are complicated and can be both/and instead of either/or. I am glad that you described the series so well. Though I won't be watching it soon, I think, by the way you describe it, the series offers opportunities to discuss how trauma influences behaviors so deeply.

I saw your review in my thumbnails and I knew I had to watch this series first. Binged it in one night, and all I'm thinking at the end is, "Man, how is Boo going to review this in her signature style"? Appreciate you dropping the act for a bit to give this series the recognition it deserves.

Thank you for this comment. It's nice to know you guys will hang with me even when the tone shifts a bit. Not to worry though, next week I'm looking for the worst movie I can find to roast, and it's gonna be stoopid. That's two o's!

Good review boo! What I found most frustrating was his going along with it all and taking ages to report it. And just his general decision making. There’s been a real life ‘Martha’ hunt and apparently she’s going live on tv tomorrow and suing him 🤣 but what I’ve found weirder is no one seemed to want to track ‘Darren’ down. It’s sad how he gets totally obsessed at the end trying to find the reasons why. And the ending comes full circle. It makes you wonder if he’s going to start stalking now lol!

What a great point - as a society we were completely removed from one another and put behind screens, even on a familial level at times during the pandemic. I didn't take into account how big of an effect that had on our ability to connect with one another both through the internet and in person. Very apt observation. Being put behind a screen to connect has disconnected us on a level I didn't even realize.

Great review of the series... 🎉I also agree with the part about oeople in general and you sharing about your friend Bone.. Since you filmed this there has been a lot resurfacing about it not being a true story, i wish it was presented more as storytelling, inspired by... As a content creator i had a hard core stalker for years (hes still active but underground), it was brutal so it was hard and relateable to watch.. however, when i was openly making content and writting about it i made sure to keep to the facts. To keep it true and not fictional. That is my only issue with this show, eventho it was brilliantly made it shouldn't ruin real lives. If people put "This is a true story" before every episode it is hard to excuse things not being true, i wouldn't want someone making a movie about me that is not true and lying that it is true, projecting onto me and damaging my life. I think noone wants that. Thank you for the review 🦋

@@ABooTubeProduction thank you, it was very scary and dangerous.. 7 years, different stages.. it switched from online to IRL.. Even today i never know if he will pop out somewhere in gront of my building.. coz you never know what could trigger them, but you just learn to deal and live with it, it changes you for sure... On the show he wasn't really afraid of her that much and was in a way sometimes needing validation and affection, that is rare for the rest of us.. the other thing ( that you referenced, you said even as a small channel you get weird comments) and you are right, its almost "normalized".. when you are a CC, in a way i feel people have less empathy for getting weird comments (or a stalker) because "well it comes with the territory, you knew if you expose yourself online there is a high chance of someone being obsessed with you".. 🤷 goodluck on your yt journey, i really enjoyed the vid. 🦋

I’m going to make a broad judgement. I think you are lovely. … I also loved your analysis of BR. I hope it allows people to understand why some people who have experienced trauma then go onto make terrible choices in life and continue the abuse by abusing themselves. I very nearly stopped watching it as I just couldn’t bear watching someone over and over seemingly have no insight whatsoever as to how he encouraged his stalker, how utterly awful he was a comedian and how obvious it was to me that Darrien was a sleeve bag on first meeting. But there is a line where he says he knew what he was doing to himself after the sexual abuse. Classic trauma bonding off which very few understand is a thing. Strange timing too with the Diddy allegations and what people will do for fame, money or just recognition. A lesson in not judging people unless you have walked in their shoes. Thank you for your channel.

Thank you for this! I think he missed the red flags with Darrien because he wanted so much to be liked and acknowledged for his talent. I also wonder if that's why he went back in the end, and why it was important for Darrien to offer him a real job. But then, he'll always wonder if it's because of his talent or because he wanted to keep him quiet about who attacked him so I hope he never accepted that job! Ahhh this is such a well written show!

There are many errors in this 'true story'. She has never been to prison, he didn't break down on stage, no evidence that he assaulted his ex gf, ex trans gf, got his mum and dad involved. Also Gadd made it easy to identify the real Martha (Fiona Harvey) and the male rapist. Also Fiona looks similar to Martha but was much more attractive 12 years ago than was portrayed (certainly not overtly obese). Story may be broadly true, but this is his version. Later he has said that this is all 'emotionally' true. ie not factually true. Andrew O'Connor needs to face charges and Richard Gadd needs to tell us which parts in the series are factually incorrect. Fiona is a compulsive pathological liar, so she is not a reliable source.
@ABooTubeProduction
@ABooTubeProduction 4 месяца назад
I don’t think he needs to do anything but use his experience as a creative jumping off point for great writing. When I say these are “true and real people,” I mean that this is written so well that it all rings true even if he took creative liberties in the story telling. If this were a historical drama where events were changed, maybe it would need to be more accurate but at the end of the day, he changed names and told his story and he is well within his rights to do so.

We don't know if fiona is a pathological liar because you Said yourself we do not know what's true and what isn't, and the actress, the younger version of her, is definetly obese. For the rest you are correct

@Globaldave1970
@Globaldave1970 4 месяца назад
@@ABooTubeProduction With respect, haven't missed the point at all, you have. You are just gushing about the series, the writing, the acting etc. This is a dramatic representation of real events with two people who should be facing charges. Martha would get off on medical grounds, and would get psychiatric help (Fiona Harvey), but his relationship with Martha and his failed relationships (with ex gf and ex trans gf ) are largely due to his grooming and raping by a famous comedy writer, now executive producer, Daren. Now, his charges are definitely prisonable, as well as his reputation being totally crushed. Gadd has said that Fiona would not even recognise Martha, which is obviously untrue. And her reaction is completely predictable. OK, character Daren Daren O'Connor is really Gary Reich. People in the industry also know it's him, but have not made it public. It's only a matter of time. Then the sh** will really hit the fan.
