It wasn’t until sometime later after I watched this that I found out this was inspired by real events and a real person. John Holmes aka Johnny Wad was the inspiration for Mark Walhberg’s character. And the incident at the end with the shootout inspired by The Wonderland murders that John Holmes allegedly was apart of. There’s a movie about called Wonderland and it stars Val Kilmer as John Holmes and also stars Lisa Kudrow from Friends. Yes you get to see Phoebe Buffet in a serious role

Bittersweet ending because while Dirk and the gang are back together and making a comeback, the point in time where the movie ends means that the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 80s is just around the corner…

I like what the director said about that final monologue. He points out that Dirk is so far gone that he has not only lost sight of whom he once was as Eddie Adams, but even as Dirk Diggler. When he gets up and all you see is his huge dong, it’s as though that’s the only thing about him which really matters or has any real value. “I’m a star, I’m a star, I’m a star. I’m a big, bright shining star.”

@@smoothALOEyeah, it’s such a great ending and was also a shock when I first saw it given how we went the whole film without seeing it, only people’s reactions to seeing it, so the reveal at the end really sums up Eddie/Dirk and where his sense of identity is placed. To him his finally found comfort in his identity, but in reality it’s really all he is, a guy with a big dong. It’s a bittersweet but sorta sad ending.

When I saw the trailers for this movie on TV in the late 90's, I saw disco dancing and roller skates so -- *honest to God* -- I thought it was about roller disco. My dad didn't know what it was about, either. He rented it at Blockbuster and invited me to watch it at his house. Those were 2 of the most excruciating hours of my entire life. We both realized at the same time, "Holy ****, this is NOT about roller disco." We entered into an unspoken game of chicken, neither of us speaking, neither of us looking at each other, and neither wanting to be the first to bolt out of the room screaming. Technically, I won: when "the money shot" hit the screen, my dad turns to me and asks, "Is that real?" Like I have a PhD in penises or something. Cringe Scale rating: 15 out of 10.

"Boogie Nights" makes you think this is a movie about porn when it's really about family. A group of dysfunctional broken characters rejected by society that form their own roots, their own connections. To build the people that they call family. The characters are trying to make money the best way they know how and in doing so they have to look out for each other. Amber becomes Dirk and Roller Girl's mom. Jack is the father to them all. John C. Riley is the best friend you would roll with through anything. This is the world of Boogie Nights, for now and forever.

Paul Thomas Anderson totally captured the era when porn films moved to video. The actors, the producers, the industry, the whole scene-and how it all collapsed on itself. Burt Reynolds did not like this movie at all, but it is arguably his best role, even earned him an Oscar nomination. His performance was that good. Great pick. 🔥

@caseymoe816
@caseymoe816 18 дней назад
@@orangewarm1 No, I was more of what you might call “industry adjacent.” I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, at the time when this movie was set (mid-to-late 70s). My dad worked for Disney, my cousin was a struggling actor and budding filmmaker. The film industry was just engrained in the culture. The Valley was well known for being the porn capital of the world, as well as being the location of all the big mainstream movie studios (Warner Bros., Universal, Columbia, etc). All of the studios (both mainstream & adult) went through a big technological transformation during the late 70s/early 80s. I wanted to be a novelist and/or screenwriter. Porn was obviously on the periphery of the film industry, but was everywhere (adult theaters, adult bookstores, et al.), so you were aware at the very least it existed. When video arrived, suddenly anyone could make a film. The traditional “storytelling” form of movies, especially in porn, flew out the window. Video was the perfect medium for porn. Anyone could make one, put it on VHS, get it easily distributed and people could enjoy it in the privacy of their own homes. That’s when porn exploded. Major studios followed suit, distributing their new and classic films through video stores. Bert Reynold’s character finds himself on the outside looking in, and his only choice was to go with the flow in order to survive. This movie perfectly captured that time.

The characters and their stories are not full of melodramatic padding, even at their lowest point you feel invested in their outcomes. Every character feels like a believable, well-rounded person with naturalistic authentic dialogue. There's just nothing like "Boogie Nights", every aspect of it goes so well together to create this masterpiece.

Dirk really grows up during this movie, and Jack and Amber become his parents and the other friends, his family. Sometimes you have to almost die to get lessons learned. It look Molina's character almost shooting his head off to wake him up and kick cocaine and get back to his family again. The scene that gets me is him crying in Amber's lap just apologizing over and over again. My parents were pretty liberal with us and we watched this as a family. When it got to the point that Eddie's Mom kicked him out, she told us "I would never do that to any child, no matter what." Jack and Amber were his real parents always.

This is such a great character study...on EVERY LEVEL for EVERY CHARACTER. The depth of story that each character has is astounding. When Little Bill kills himself and his wife, it signals the switch from the 70's to the '80s. A complete tone change after that one scene would signal how the industry would change for the worst. When the robbery happens and we see Don Cheadle eyeing that money, we know his life will change for the better. Such as master stoke in directing to let you know things have changed without spelling it out.

My dudes- Nina Hartley's character isn't "cheating on WHM's character"- she's engaging in the sex life that she assumes her husband is ok with. He chose to marry an-ex porn-star, so this is him realizing that the fantasy doesn't match the reality for poly couples and going the extreme route. His wife was banging other dudes because she thought her hubby was cool with it. He wasn't. It's a little deeper than just "SHE WAS CHEATING ON HIM!" My man Bill Macy's character got himself into a relationship he wasn't prepared for and snapped. It's not exactly his wife's fault 🙃

It's about time!! Love this film! Saw it opening night, and THAT ENDING!!! All the women in the theatre either gasped, cat-called, wolf-whistled, giggled...never saw so many 'date-night' boyfriends actually shrink in their seats, or look away, or even BLUSH! Phony phallic or not, movies NEVER end that way! LOL!! 😆👍🏻

I watched the NC-17 version on opening night. I was the only person in the theater, and was AMAZED. Paul Thomas Anderson is a film god.

This film is loosely based on the life of John Holmes, a big porn star of the 70s. The scene were the rob the drug dealer lead to the Wonderland murders(theres a film about that also).

I heard this movie was loosely based on famously known porn star John Holmes, but I don’t know if that’s true or not. It’s a great movie . I also heard that Burt Reynolds hated working on the film.

I used to play pick-up basketball games with the guy who robs the donut store. I didn't know him too well, he was a friend of a friend of a friend, but one day he kinda casually mentions he was in a few movies because his mom was a casting director. In an instant it dawned on me! I turned to him and exclaimed "you were in Boogie Nights! You robbed the donut shop!" It's one of my all time favorite sequences in film!

I am not sure if any compliment I have for this will sound like a pun intended or not.... other than to let you both know that I enjoyed this more here than I did watching this the first time . You both have a great way of bringing out the comedy in things even more and I was on board . I can not imagine the editing it took for this movie but I am impressed . Mark Wahlberg plays a character I believe that very few actors could represent as well.... in a role that probably many would shy away from.... Mark delivered such an odd but believable person . Thank you both for this fun treat for a Friday night . I look forward to much more .

When I got the notification this morning that you guys were reacting to "Boogie Nights," I got up early, got my breakfast out of the way, and sat down to watch this. Your reaction was spot on and, as always, priceless. You set a precedent because no other reactors have done this film probably because it would be a tough job to edit and this film is not to everyone's taste. BTW: Curtis you did a GREAT job of editing this. I'm sure it took hours on hours to do it and it was worth it. As much as Burt Reynolds hated doing this movie, I think it's the best thing next to "Mystery, Alaska," he ever did. He got an Oscar nomination for it but lost (and he knew he would lose) to Robin Williams in "Good Will Hunting." The acting credits was an index of Who's Who in TV and Movie Acting and not a single one from the smallest to the biggest role was a disaapointment. You might consider "Marigold." Another Paul Thomas Anderson film that follows the same kind of formula and style Congratulations, guys. You did the impossible.

Notice how earlier in the movie, Dirk would look in the mirror and give himself the "You're a big shining star" pep talk? It's kind of revealing (heh) at the end that he's humble enough to unzip and pull out what's really the "big shining star" about him, while he works on legit acting skills.

This and "There Will Be Blood" - which is TOTALLY different - these movies show you a world and an existence you thought you'd never see. A+ movie and A+ reaction!!!!

I think the hilarity comes from the fact that they’re making it dead serious even though it’s just porn
