@@seansersmylie A way overlooked but decent crime thriller about it, Wonderland, is a worthwhile watch if you haven't seen it. Val Kilmer does an excellent job playing John Holmes during his cokehead days with the film being solid in depicting different sides of what happened and how it went down that night from separate perspective. The actor who plays Eddie Nash was also legit frightening and great; I was happy to see him in Uncut Gems when I realized it's him lol. I've passed by the Wonderland house way randomly when driving to a friend's spot in the hills. As far as I remember, it eerily looks the same as it did in the photos from forever ago.

@@seansersmylie Very loosely based. In the real life case, Holmes left a door unlocked after visiting a drug dealer's (Eddie Nash) house. Then he told a gang that they could rob the house... So the gang did. In a particularly fateful decision, the leader of the gang went out of his way to humiliate Eddie Nash and his body guard. Nash and his body guard suspected that Holmes was behind the robbery, so they found him and beat him until he admitted that the robbery was his idea and he also snitched on the others. They brought Holmes to the gang's hideout, and had Holmes unlock the front gate and door. Then they entered the hideout and brutally murdered the gang.

I was ten years clean and sober when I saw it in the theater, and the firecracker scene was so on point for the times, it made my palms sweat and the music for that part of the movie was perfect. The 80s were wild, but there was a serious dark side.

Boogie Nighs is just overall a dope movie. I really can't think of anything that is as funny as this film is, while getting incredibly dark at points and touching on serious subjects. So many great actors in this in great roles. Its a real shame so many have passed now. The colonel, Scottie, Jack, Floyd all gone now. Its also crazy that Burt Reynolds absolutely hated Paul Thomas Anderson and didn't like this movie at all. I'd argue that it's hus best work, tbh.

For Burt Reynolds check out Smokey and the Bandit 1 and 2, Mystery Alaska, Deliverance, The Longest Yard (original and remake with Adam Sandler), The Dukes of Hazzard(2005 movie not the show), and Cannonball Run. Reynolds movies over the years are really hit or miss as he did a bunch of crap movies for a paycheck. Not faulting him for taking them, just want to add context as to why he is in so many bad movies.

Great stuff, as usual. This one is truly unique. The woman who played the “screwing wife” was Nina Hartley. She was one of the top porn stars of the 70’s and 80’s. So far as her character, I got the vibe that she was working in the business, just not with the same filmmakers. So far as Burt Reynolds: he had a strangely wasted career. At the very beginning, some thought he was destined for true greatness, up there with the classics. But so much time was wasted on “junk” roles like Smokey and the Bandit. They were big box office, but mostly throw away entertainment. But I STRONGLY suggest reacting to ‘Deliverance’ (1972). It was a big deal at the time, nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, but didn’t win. It’s the kind of story you’re unlikely to forget. So far as director Paul Thomas Anderson, I very strongly suggest reacting to There Will Be Blood (2007). It was huge at Oscar time, and deservedly so. I think it’s a true American classic, and the story itself is very much an American story, centered around the discovery of oil out West around 1900.

1:08:01: Burt Reynolds. So, without casting aspersions, performers are generally broken up into two groups: serious actors and movie stars. In the seventies, Burt Reynolds was a MOVIE STAR. In fact, the narrative surrounding Reynolds when he received a best supporting actor nomination for "Boogie Nights" was that he was either A.) a faded movie star who was having a comeback or B.) he was a movie star who had finally done something respectable and was being given his flowers. Unfortunately he lost to Robin Williams, who received a much-deserved win for "Good Will Hunting"*. * "Good Will Hunting" is probably worth reacting to if you guys haven't seen it. Reynolds best known roles are probably the 1972 horror film "Deliverance", fallowed by "Smokey and the Bandit (1977)" and "The Cannonball Run (1981)", both of which got sequels. He also starred in the original 1974 edition of "The Longest Yard", which was remade by Adam Sandler in 2005. I primarily know him because of the 1989 animated film "All Dogs go to Heaven" where he co-starred with "The Cannonball Run" alum Dom DeLuise, who was a frequent collaborator of his at the time. He also show's up in one of the more memorable segments from the 1972 Woody Allen film "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex * ( * But Were Afraid to Ask)".

What's funny about these reactions is that when you guys recognize an actor, it's usually from superhero movies and other bullshit they only do for money because the industry has changed so much that serious movies they actually want to be in like Boogie Nights, Taxi Driver, Sexy Beast, etc, are far more difficult to come by because studios only want to put out shit that they think is guaranteed to make a billion like the MCU and so on. A lot of what you guys are watching is where I want things to return to. I came up as a nerd and a comic book fan, but as a grown man even I have my limits and I've been sick of this repetitive, rubber suit CGI space battle shit for years now.

There Will Be Blood is Weirdo Andersons masterpiece. In no small small part due to Daniel Day Lewis of course. Should followup with that if havent seen it. More of a slow burn like No Country. Blood & No Country were in the theater at the same time fighting for those worthless hunks of tin called oscars. Caught em back to back one night

Don't assume the longer version is the better version. The Director's Cut is actually rarely better than the theatrical version.

It’s cool, I made a mistake when seeing the two versions. There was only about 6 minutes difference so I don’t think they were different versions.

Burt Reynolds was THE BIGGEST movie star of the 70s. Period. There are better actors, there are people who stretched their fame/influence for longer, but Burt OWNED the 70s in terms of Movie Stars. Pretty sure your fans would FLIP if you guys went on the Smokey & The Bandit ride! Finally... when Jack accepts Dirk back into the fold, I don't think thoughts of dollar signs had much to do with it. Paul Thomas Anderson was showing us the lows and the highs. The lows? Obvious. The drugs. The stigma. The highs? Well, it is like a family. A dysfunctional family... but it's got a lot of the GOOD elements we think of when we say "family."
