I'm from a 3rd world country: ◾Amazon doesn't ship to us or has like 50$ shipping🤮 ◾Blackwell's has many books even a +10$ price difference, I can eat for that, or buy another book, or both 😵 ◾Other websites don't even ship or have shipping which makes the price almost double ... ◾(Of course, libraries are non-existent or with minor book catalogs) So I guess some of us poor people that apparently don't deserve to read need to go back to the certain forbidden way of reading 🤷‍♀🤷‍♀ 🤷‍♀ and whoever makes Twitter drama about how books should be bought not pirated needs to be slapped ... hard. Talk to the Amazon guy or be quiet.

Hi! I don't know where you live but I live in Malaysia and we are facing pretty much the same issue. If Waterstones deliver to your country, I would recommend you to order from them when they have their massive discounts once or twice a year (last one was around Christmas). A lot of books are then around 50% off, and international shipping is very affordable when you order more than 5 books at once. Also, they only take your money when they ship the book so that spreads the spending throughout a few weeks / months (yeah, they are quite slow to ship...).

Even for me in Canada, a country with high access where I can get most things through Indigo or local bookstores, it was the ONLY place I could get certain books (and yes, definitely used it for the UK covers). This is truly so horrible for people in parts of the world where access is really limited. Hearing what people go through and what they pay to get books is infuriating. Thanks for the good, nuanced take on this! It's not as simple as many people in places with high access want to make it, although I'm even more committed than ever to avoiding Amazon like the plague they are.

I’m also Canadian and I’m a bit gutted. All I really have local to me is a chapters and the full price for books for me is too much, I can’t spend $20-30 + on a new book. So many of my used book stores have closed and the one that has stayed open the prices are so high (I totally get it) and often the demand for the same books so high that it can’t really cover what book depository did for me. I’m lucky we have great access to libraries but they don’t cover everything either and I can’t get a cool art book from them and draw in it like I did from BD😭😭 BD was something I used to recommend to book lovers a lot😕 It’s a sad day all around for so many reasons and from so many perspectives.

I had an anxiety attack over this. Books in English, or even localizations of books on my TBR (which is consisted of 93% English literature mind you) are either very hard to find, expensive, or just plain don’t exist in my country (Greece). And I live at the capital, we have arguably the largest library of foreign works. Buying directly from Amazon is just impossible in this economy and I still haven’t found a good alternative. There’s a very good chance there’s series that I’ll never get to finish, or that I’ll never get to read a book of my favourite author ever again, since they’re not localised here and their books aren’t even sold in their original language. My TBR got significantly cut down and well- books keep me alive to put it lightly. Not having access to them is actually incredibly harmful to my mental health, and I’m sure there’s others like me in the world who feel like that too. Book depository was basically our only choice and while Blackwell’s is getting better, it is not even halfway there yet.

I am not sure how to write this message... you seem to be such a lovely person, but it did affect me a little bit when you started calling people who do not agree with your ideas racist. I don't know the context, or who you were talking about... I also have never been to the United States, but from what my friends tell me it is a very racist country. But I do know that there is a lot of anger in society nowadays specially in English speaking countries, where there seem to be 2 totalitarian ideologies fighting each other, one right wing and the other left wing. Just because someone does not agree with you, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are racist. Never in history has the blind adherence to an ideology been a good thing. In order to build peace in our society, we need to be respectful of other people whose ideas are different from ours. There were movements of peace building such as non-violence with Gandhi, or Ubuntu with Nelson Mandela, that helped build a better place. The things that are going on nowadays, they just spread hate. What is your objective: to build a better world or to be right and impose your ideas on to other people because you are so sure that you are right and everyone else is wrong? I hope you do not get offended with this message.

Book Depository prices weren't as low as a few years back, but they still had free shipping, which made a huge difference, for many people it was the best way to get books at more affordable prices (especially more technical books, graphic novels and mangas). Amazon bought the competition years ago, just to close it off now. Disgusting. It wasn't cheap to buy books in english in my country, but now I am pretty sure bookshops here will increase the price (I am talking about the bigger chains of course). Even ebook prices are going through the roof, hitting ridiculous prices (kobo in Portugal). If you take down the competition (being it book depository and other stores and websites that provide ebooks - yes, even if it's illegally) the other prices will go up. They are going after libraries next, it's a miracle you can get free books in this society without a special tax of some sort.

Hey man... before you go about that anti-conservative stuff and name-calling, there's good and bad reasons for all things. Some people be freaking out over nothing but there are also many cases of inappropriate gay books in elementary/middle schools. Please be respectful, that was rude and uncalled for. Especially after you saying "I need to learn more about this before I say anything."

Another (very annoying) thing is that even though it says that the last day to order is April 26, BD already stopped accepting orders from quite a few countries (there's a long list on the website) even before then. When I read the announcement I immediately went to check out the books I had on my wishlist and was confused when the order wouldn't go through. That's when I realized they aren't shipping to the Philippines anymore. Boo! *throws rotten vegetables at the selfish billionaire*

I can sympathize with international readers. This sucks. No matter who evil or not, if you want to get books, you should be able to get them. I'm from Russia and I cannot buy anything from other countries and my only chance to get foreign books is by pirating them. Who does it help? None of that prevents the war and people dying.

As a Middle Easterner, not all books are available in my country; if they are, the costs are likely to be increased, and some books (that contain some spice) are banned from entering. I was unaware of BD's closing until it was too late, and since I didn't receive my allowance until the day it closed, I sadly missed the opportunity for placing an order before it closes):

Hi all book lovers! For me in Ukraine bookdepository was a great option, now I don’t know how to order original book, because shipping is so expensive.

It's such a shame. It's very evident how many people in non-English speaking countries used it because that was the only way they could get such a wide selection of books, myself included. Amazon needs to burn as usual. I hate how it was announced too. It was ONE Guardian post and then BP emailed people literally 3 days after and it is closing SO soon. Literally no notice. I'm so worried about the employees too. More like battle of the basic white man who doesn't have enough sense and too much money.

I've only purchased from Book Depository maybe two times in the past. Blackwell's is my go-to. Great service and great prices. I also buy US edition books from Blackwell's too because a lot of times I save $10-15 on the book vs. buying it from a US-based bookstore.

Thank you so much Jess for expressing what most people want to say but are too conservative to say so. I am gutted to say the least, Book Depository was my go to as a mom of a large family. Have you heard of World Of Books? They ship internationally also and they have a great variety. I think they only do used books though. They are great for some older titles that you can't find anymore in bookstores which is good. .

When I received an email from BD on Wednesday telling me it was closing, I was in shock. Like, what am I supposed to do now? I started reading during COVID and discovered BD pretty recently in 2020. I've been buying from BD due to the free shipping and its wide range of selection. BD has been the best economical place to shop for English books for people like me in the Far East. Now I'm just at loss... After researching, I have already placed orders with Blackwell's, the next best thing, which provides a fair range of books but not as expansive as BD. I noticed the prices on BD at the beginning of 2023 had gone up and was wondering why. I guess it was a sign foreshadowing today's sad news.

I got my email notice last night! I am upset. I have been getting special printing of books that were written in the 17 and 1800s from them. They ain't cheap, especially when it comes to books with multiple volumes. But you could get them from there. I hate it too.

Blackwells does not deliver free to Argentina. They use UPS which is private courier and Amazon uses DHL, also private courier both super expensive. Unaffordable. I won't be able to buy books anymore. I don't care to pay for kindle books, I never re-read a kindle book. So, yes, we're fucked

It's not as cheap as Amazon usually but usually it is fairly close. If you don't mind paying for shipping, bull moose (based in Maine in the USA) has better prices than Amazon, or prices within cents of Amazon. It's where i used to get all my books there. Their website does kind of suck though.

There's also quite a few books Amazon doesn't even sell particularly by disabled authors. I'm not sure why but there's a few i tried to find there but couldn't. I try not to support Amazon but sometimes you have to or gift cards or whatever
