I LOVED this bookhaul! I love old books, especially when they have a beautiful spine. I try to collect them, but so far I only have a few. My favourite one is an Everyman edition of Pride and Prejudice (red, gold embossing).
my family has a handful of old books, my favorites growing up were "When we were Very Young" (60's edition) and "Now we are Six" (20's edition) by A. A. Milne because fun poems. The oldest book that we have (and the most impressive I think) is "Q.Curtii Rufi: Historia Alexandri Magni; Decem Libris Comprehensa."(History of Alexander the Great by Quintus Curtius Rufus) from 1718 which is entirely in Latin. It's a pretty small book with tiny font and the spine isn't in the best shape, but I'm amazed that the front and back covers, and the pages, are still intact. :) More recently my grandmother has given me my pick of her antique books since she was moving, so I got a couple novels from the 20's, 1905, late 19th century, and a Memoir of John Knox from the 1860s.
Beautiful book haul! I love vintage books. I have a collection of children’s books from the 50s and 60s which used to belong to my mum but I collect a few when I see them. Can’t believe you got most of those for a dollar each! I need to get back to New Zealand!
That's the trouble - you can find out when something was first published online, but it's hard to figure out when a particular edition came out. I'll have to do some research.
Holly Dunn Design I thought about that literally as soon as I hit the post button! I'm interested to find out when that one was published as the cover is both kitschy and gorgeous 😁
My grandmother was a librarian and loved books. When my grandparents passed away, nobody else in the family wanted any of her gorgeous collection (😱how??), so my parents took a lot of them. They're saving them for when I have a more permanent residence and can display them properly, but I loved having a look through them. So many beautiful books from throughout the 20th century.
These decorative bindings are so pretty. Both new and old books have their own charm. One Slovak old publisher SPKK, not active now, had nice simple binding in different colours. They published 'classics' as Conan Doyle, Herman Melville, Stanislaw Lem, etc. Also my oldest book is Czech scifi from 1925 (unfortunately it's the first book in unknown series...)
well, not really :D dust jackets are basic, white with some picture, but the hardcover itself is in various colours. I like the spines together, pretty colourful :D but with Slovak old (well, communist) publishers unfortunately you can't find a lot of beautiful covers (not so much as British).
I find that American covers from the turn of the century are some of the most beautiful. Lots of female designers too! I have a video coming up about one of them :)
Smashing book haul - it’s so nice to see different sorts of books to the usual ones 😀 I love those decorative bindings - I wish more publishers still did them! Love your notebook designs too, so pretty! 💕
