Please enjoy this collection of books. I was drawn to all of these because of their beautiful book cover designs, or their vintage style. The books range from 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. I start by looking at the middle grade/young reader books that belonged to my mom when she was younger. First one is Freaky Friday by Mary Rodgers. I didn't know the Lindsay Lohan movie was based on a book! But I love it's pink cover with an Edward Gorey drawing!
A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L'engle. The cover of this 1979 edition is super unique and rare compared to the one I'm used to, it's even a little scary. I love comparing different editions of the same book, and deciding which has the best book cover. A Wrinkle In Time is a classic!
I loved Judy Blume as a kid, and I found my mom's old copies of Blubber and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. I enjoy these retro/classic covers much more than the current modern ones. I loved her documentary, Judy Blume forever.
Trixie Beldon and the Mystery of the Blinking Eye has such a beautiful cover. I love the color palette and how the values are so low contrast. This one has such a vintage feel! And the inside cover has some portrait sketches, and I always love when books include small design details like that.
Misty of Chincoteague is a children's book from 1947. I absolutely love the cover and the painted illustrations! The colors are so soft and subtle, and I enjoy the brushstrokes of the watercolor. I even found a pressed maple leaf inside the book!
A Golden Guide to Seashores is a pocket guide book to the American coast. I love how every page has colorful and informative/scientific illustrations. The pastel palette of this book feels very evident of the 1950s time period when it was published.
Feed Your Kids Right is a kind of random book I found; it's just a book about child health. But I thought the typeface and its colorful accents were really cool, and I always love when the title of a book is raised a little for some texture and dimension.
The Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening has a super funky looking cover. I love how the bright yellow and red look next to each other. The typeface is a cool serif, and the woman on the cover has a classic retro hairstyle. I expected this book to have more imagery, but it's mostly text.
Son of Giant Sea Tortoise has a pink book cover! My favorite! This book is an archive of the competitions from New York Magazine. These competitions include a prompt, and readers send in their responses. This book publishes both the competition prompts and people's entries, as well as their name and where they're from.
I found a 1955 copy of Lolita. I haven't read this book, and I'm not sure I plan to. But it's always fun seeing another version of a classic book cover. Especially because certain covers of this book are so contested. This one looked very old because of the way the ink of the title appeared thicker in some areas.
Lastly, Set This House on Fire. I was pleased to find this one because it's signed on the inside cover as a Christmas present to my grandpa from his friend in 1960. This cover has an elegant typeface, and I love the contrast between the green background and these yellow and red underlinings. From this book, I also observed that author portraits used to be a lot larger than they are on books today.
Those are all the books I investigated! I love used books and book cover design, so I had a lot of fun looking through these. I love these as books for inspiration!

The first edition Neuromancer cover has got to me my favorite. Perfectly captures the 80s. Cyberpunk aesthetic while also showing a nod to the plot twist that you won’t understand until you’ve read it.

That’s super cool! I don’t look at a lot of scifi books, but it sounds like I should because I bet they have a lot of good opportunities to do crazy stuff on the cover!
