Book of Mormon [1 NEPHI 1-5] Insights
“I Will Go and Do”
January 8 - January 15, 2024
WEEK 02: SUMMARY
=================
We head into familiar territory this week as we study the first 5 chapters of Nephi’s record. I see it as an epic coming-of-age story. Nephi begins by describing himself as “exceedingly young” and ends by describing himself as a “man of large stature”. In the middle, his faith, patience, and testimony are put to the test. He’ll teach us about following a prophet even when we don’t have a full understanding as well as the power that comes from seeking to know for ourselves. His experience with his brothers getting the plates helps us understand the goodness of God and His ability to make all things work together for our good.
On the creative side, we’ll use rubber bands and treat-filled targets to help us understand the structure of the Book of Mormon. Next, we’ll chat Nephi’s attempt to pump up his brothers and perform a Karaoke anthem challenge. Finally, we’ll talk about having light in our wilderness moments with a simple flashlight object lesson.

It takes me all week, but I love having you for a study buddy! You have helped me gain deeper understanding and appreciation and have sparked so many fires in me! I’m currently the primary president in our ward and I really want to share your channel with all my teachers! I wish I could have had this resource when I was raising my family, but I still have a few grown-up sons at home and I know even they would enjoy some of the creative activities and benefit from insights I can share now. You are a huge blessing in my life!

This is a powerful lesson. You are on fire! Your insights helped me see these initial chapters in new ways that I haven't seen in many previous readings. In particular, I enjoyed your comment on the importance of family history and how our ancestors not only become REAL to us as we learn about them and do their temple work, but that they are tied to us in ways we can only catch a glimpse of in this life. I had an experience recently of reading a bio I found of my grandfather that helped me see him in a completely different light. I was blessed to be able to shed some generational resentment and harsh judgement that has been perpetuated by unkind portrayals focusing only on his faults. This is the way Elija's promise heals the hearts of the children AND the fathers through the atonement of Jesus Christ. May you continue to be blessed in your preparations and efforts to spread the Gospel and invite others to gather in.

This is such a fantastic application! Inherited resentment is so hard to shed. I love the way you tied that ability to the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Beautiful.

So grateful for your lessons Maria. They are so good and so textured with detail. You referred to going into the notes a couple of times and I'm still the most challenged tech person in the world I guess because I haven't found notes. I even got an email from your husband saying that there weren't notes for the first few lessons so I'm basically confused, lol. I have faith I'll figure this out eventually with your help, haha.

Haha. Don't worry, we can relate! This new site has had a steep learning curve for me too. You're a subscriber so I'll send you a link on gather.meckmom.com. I think Jason thought you were asking about the notes from 2020. I didn't start sharing notes until week 8 in 2020. There are notes for all the weeks we've done in 2024. I'll send you a link to open them. Just be sure to login with your gmail account because that's the account with a subscription. Jason just updated it to show the annual plan status. Thanks!

I think the attempt to get the plates when the brothers bring the ' shiny things ' gold , riches, etc. More laman's inheritance than the others , he being the oldest . They could see if they would look with spiritual eyes, riches ( and also for us, money) is something we can let go of. " we did flee .and were obliged to leave behind our gold , silver, and precious things.

I'm so glad you found me. You'll love being the Gospel Doctrine teacher. I had that calling for 5 years. It's stressful in all the best ways! You'll love it.

If you reading this Jesus Christ loves you so much and he died on the cross for you. The Bible says if you confess that Jesus is lord you will be saved. The only pathway to heaven is Jesus christ and his coming back to judge the living and the dead.
